Continue the Journey - Why Explore the Moon?
Since the beginning of civilization, humans have wondered about the moon.  Which way does it go, how does it change phases, what happens during a lunar eclipse, is there water there, does it control the tides?
We chose the moon to explore because it is the nearest place in the solar system to Earth and entirely possible to explore there.  Although we went to the moon before, there are many things we have not found out.  President Bush made a statement in January 2004  that he wanted humans from the United States back on the moon by 2015 and use it "as a waystations to Mars and beyond."   President Bush envisioned "a new foothold on the moon...and new journeys to the world beyond our own."  Knowing about the moon and how to live there will help up to get to Mars in the future.  "Mankind is drawn to the heavens for the same reason we were once drawn to unknown lands and across the open sea,"  Mr. Bush said.   "We choose to explore space because doing so improves our lives and lifts our national spirit.
So let us continue the journey."
We felt that by choosing the moon, we were in line with NASA's plans.  Just like people have been on the Earth when Lewis and Clark, Marco Polo, or Robert Peary explored and went to places for the first time in recorded history, we have been to the moon, but there are many areas there yet to explore.
We chose the moon because it was a place that was possible in our lifetime to go to.  We were studying a lot about the moon and wondering about it in class since September.  We used models to learn about rotation and revolution and the part the moon plays in day/night.  We watched it through our telescope in our classroom in the morning sometimes.  It was the place we wondered about the most.  Our class even collected a list of things we wondered about the moon before even studying about it. See our class list on
page 2.
We were happy we had chosen such a relavant place to go to.  We felt we were "one" with the space program in the news!  As we continued the project, we had more current events to draw upon to support our voyage to the moon.
