We never imagined that we'd be homeschooling our children. But when our older daughter grew bored and restless in first grade, we began exploring alternatives. The more we learned about home education, the more interested we became. Today our daughters are among the 2 million or so youngsters who are educated at home. With this website, we hope to give you a glimpse into the life of a homeschooling family--ours--and tell you something about the individuals in it. All the while, we will be having fun learning about web design and publishing.
Who We Are
We're a rather average American family: Mom, Dad, 2 kids, a dog, a cat, some tropical fish--and six chickens. We make our home in the still-rural area of eastern Long Island. We are: Peter, the dad; Denise, the mom; Katie (age 8) and Courtney (age 7), the kids; Shannon, our 10-year-old Golden Retriever "puppy"; and Honeycat, the--well, you guessed it--cat. We embarked upon the homeschool adventure in September, 1999. It's best thing we could have done for our children--for our whole family. As all homeschooling families know, the process of a home-based education creates a very special bond among us. If you're thinking about homeschooling, or if you're just curious, these are some of the books we found very informative and useful in making the decision to homeschool: Family Matters, by David Guterson; Homeschooling for Excellence, by David and Micki Colfax; Dumbing Us Down, by John Taylor Gatto; and The Conspiracy of Ignorance, by Martin L. Gross.
