How We Do It: The Classical Approach
At the very beginning of our homeschooling adventure, we were fortunate to happen upon The Well Trained Mind: A Guide to Giving Your Child a Classical Education at Home, by Jessica Wise and Susan Wise BauerBy following the advice of the authors of this remarkable book, we have been able to build a creative and dynamic curriculum centered on world history, great books, and a solid foundation in the essentials of an excellent education: grammar, writing, spelling and mathematics.
Without exaggeration, The Well Trained Mind has become
our homeschooling "bible".  It is an invaluable resource for information on method, curriculum and supplemental materials, including specific information on where to order the books, manipulatives and teaching aids recommended by the authors.

The authors maintain a website on which they post updates and corrections, a bulletin board for dialogue among classical homeschoolers, and a newsletter.
Here's the link to their site:

The best part is...we have a ball doing it!!

The key to having fun while getting a great education is CREATIVITY. Sometimes creativity comes easily, sometimes you really have to work at it. But creativity always pays off.

A real advantage of homeschooling is that it allows you the felxibility to be really creative.  There are no bells ringing to force a student to stop her work when she's excited about creating something.  There is no "down time" waiting for other students to catch up.  And, when you wake on a warm spring morning and decide it's an ideal day for a spur-of-the-moment trip to Montauk for a seal walk...you go
do it.

Learning is ever
in the freshness
of its youth,
even for the old.

HOME
This website is a small example of our creative homeschool--not only as it provides a bit of a slice of life for us, but also as a part of our educational meanderings. Katie has been dying to learn web design and publish a site. This is our first tentative step toward that learning objective. The rest of these pages will be constructed (for the most part) by the kids.  Bon Voyage and Enjoy!
One of our main goals is to instill in our daughters
a lifelong love of learning.
