Tenchi Muyo!

Quick Plot

This is the original 13 OVA episodes of the Tenchi saga. Tenchi Masaki is a teenager who spends his summers at his grandfather's shrine, where he trains to be a shinto priest and learns martial arts. Tenchi has always been curious about what is locked inside a nearby cave, so one day he steals the key from his grandfather and explores deep into the cave. There he finds a rusty sword and, to his horror, revives a centuries old demon. Tenchi escapes, but the demon soon hunts him down, attacking him to retrieve the powerful gems inset in the hilt of his sword. Tenchi manages to defeat the demon, Ryoko, but his troubles don't end there.

Ryoko decides to stay with Tenchi and soon falls in love with him. When Ayeka and Sasami, Jurian princesses who are searching for the long lost Jurian Prince Yosho, wander by Earth, a battle erupts between Ryoko and Ayeka. With everyone soon stranded, Ayeka and Ryoko begin a great rivalry over Tenchi's heart. The rivalry thickens as Mihoshi, a ditzy Galaxy Police officer, and Washu, Ryoko's creator and a super genius, arrive and vie for Tenchi. Tenchi soon finds himself protecting the girls both from intergalactic villians and each other.

My Opinion

This is one of my personal favorites because the animation is great, the characters are developed well, and the plot is interesting. The thirteen episode OVA is sold on a two disc set in a very nice package. It is well worth the hundred or so dollars. The artwork is very crisp and fluid in these shows. Well, sometimes it is jumpy, but that is because the characters tend to teleport around a good bit. The character depth is greater here than in the other series. Only the Tenchi movies come close to the quality of these episodes.

Tenchi Universe

Quick Plot

This series begins as Ryoko, closely pursued by Galaxy Police officer Mihoshi, crashlands on Earth. Tenchi, rushing to help the injured Ryoko, quickly finds himself caught in the middle of their battle, but due to Mihoshi's nature they soon call a truce. Ayeka, Sasami, Washu, and even a new character, Space Police officer Kiyone, soon arrive on earth. They end up living at Tenchi's house just like they did in the OVA series. They have a few small adventures, but the real plot starts when a unsurper takes the throne of Jurai and sends half of the fleet after Ayeka and the Tenchi crew. Narrowly escaping encounters with the Galaxy Police and the Jurian forces, they slowly make their way to Jurai to face the pretender who has taken the throne.

My Opinion

This series mirrors the original Tenchi Muyo in many ways, but some relationships have changed drastically. Instead of Ryoko being the lifelong watcher of Tenchi, she is now no more than a galactic criminal, this time of her own free will. The relationship between Ayeka and Yosho has also dissappeared. And of course Washu is no longer Ryoko's mother/creator, she is actually the imprisoned demon of the Masaki shrine. I felt that the lack of history between characters, such as that which existed in the OVA, greatly lessened the characters' ties. Kiyone presents an interesting new twist to the story, as she seems to somehow resist being hopelessly in love with Tenchi like all the other girls are. She provides a voice of reason and calm that helps counterbalance the passions amongst the other girls.

Tenchi in Tokyo

Description

I have sat through this whole series. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great either. The animation is sloppy and lacks the quality of the first two series. Plus they changed the voices of Yosho and Nobuyuki! That always is annoying. The new voices never sound half as good as the original for some reason, maybe because we tend to link people to voices rather strongly. The story is ok, but a little too predictable during most of the series. Is it just me, or did ship Ryo Ohki shrink? Yosho isnt even appearing anymore, that sucks. Sayuka is boring. But it is still pretty good. Just not up to Tenchi standards. If it wasn't for the Ryoko's date episode I would call this series a loss overall. That great episode is all that saved this series from getting two stars.

Favorite Characters

Ryoko(of course), but Yosho seems kinda dumb in this series.

Tenchi the Movie: Tenchi Muyo in Love

Quick Plot

This movie falls sometime after the conclusion of Tenchi Universe. A very dangerous criminal, known only as Kain, has escaped from the Galaxy Police and is ready to get his revenge on members of the Jurai Royal Family. He sets his sights on the daughter of Lord Katsuhito(Yosho) in the year 1970. In the present year(1996 at the time) Tenchi suddenly begins to fade away. Washu uses her ingenius inventions to keep Tenchi in place long enough to figure out that something has happened to his mother, Achika, preventing her from marrying and having Tenchi. Washu sends Tenchi and the girls back in time to prevent this change in the timeline from occuring. Once there Tenchi must avoid his parents while keeping an eye on them, with much help from the girls. When Kain finally shows up, they are ready and waiting, but find him to be a much greater foe than they feared.

My Opinion

It had been a long time since I had seen any kind of Tenchi. I had meant to buy the movies for a long time, and I am very glad that I finally did. This movie is simply great. The backgrounds contained tons of peaceful forest scenes which were beautiful and amazing. The movie's plot reminded me of Back to the Future, sans Delorean. The characters look great; overall the animation is about on par with the OVA's. The movie moved at a quick pace but had plenty of comedy spread throughout it. I really liked this movie and recommend it to anyone who likes Tenchi at all.

Tenchi the Movie 2: The Daughter of Darkness

Quick Plot

This movie, unlike the first Tenchi movie, appears to fall in the OVA series, which is evidenced by the fact that Tenchi has only been able to produce the Lighthawk Wings Sword in that series. One day while Tenchi is walking home, a young blue-haired girl appears out of nowhere. The girl, named Mayuka, is convinced that Tenchi is her father, though she has no other memories. Tenchi brings her home with him and most of the girls immediately fall in love with the cute and sweet Mayuka. Ryoko and Ayeka, however, do not care for this mysterious visitor trying to get so close to Tenchi. Ayeka eventually begins to trust Mayuka, but Ryoko remains both jealous and convinced that Mayuka is up to no good. Mayuka seems innocent enough, but after a series of odd behaviors it is revealed that Mayuka was sent by a strange creature from Yosho's past. Tenchi and the girls must battle both to defeat the dark creature and save innocent Mayuka from her creator.

My Opinion

This is another very good Tenchi movie. The animation is on par with the OVA's, the plot runs smoothly, and the movie keeps the rivalry humor that Tenchi is famous for. Mayuka is an interesting character who is as gentle as Sasami, tempermental as Ryoko, and polite as Ayeka. Tenchi and Ryoko's relationship is strongly reaffirmed in this movie and Ryoko stays determined to protect Tenchi at any cost. There are large amounts of character interaction in this movie, a staple of the Tenchi universes. As usual, there is no real introduction of the characters, so newcomers could be left behind quickly.

Tenchi Forever (Tenchi Muyo in Love 2)

Quick Plot

This could be considered the finale of the Tenchi Universe continium. Tenchi disappears off the face of the earth one day while walking alone in the woods. The girls are very alarmed and begin several massive search efforts to track him down. They soon begin to lose hope as even Washu's best efforts and Sasami's search from Jurai turn up no clues. Eventually Washu learns that Tenchi may be in Tokyo, and sends Ryoko and Ayeka there to look for him. They get jobs as waitresses at a small cafe and spend their free time searching the city. They get several glimpses of Tenchi, but to their suprise he suddenly disappears each time. Finally, Washu discovers that Tenchi has been trapped in a parallel dimension by Haruna, the lonely spirit of Yosho's first love. With Washu's help the two girls penetrate the alternate dimension to find out that Tenchi, now somewhat older, seems to be in love with Haruna , who plans to forever keep him there.

My Opinion

This movie focused more heavily on Ryoko and Ayeka than anyone. Washu and the rest did their parts well, but the story really focused on the two leading ladies' quest to find Tenchi. The two, instead of killing each other, as you would expect from their past, really united and seemed as close friends. Tenchi did not act very characteristally during his abduction, perhaps due to his missing memories. The fact that he only had rememberances of Ryoko, going as far as requesting curtains the same color as her hair and repeatedly drawing sketches of her showed that she meant more to him than he usually shows. The long asked question of who Tenchi likes best may have been finally answered by this movie. The movie has ok animation, at times looking comparable to Tenchi in Tokyo. This may be due partially to the fact that everyone is supposed to look more mature now. The action is very low in this movie, but any true fan of Tenchi should love the amount of time spent delving into the characters. I would only reccommend this movie to people familiar with the series because, as with all the Tenchi movies, if you don't know who the characters are it would be greatly confusing. I think that its a small price to pay to save a long exhibition introducing everyone and their relationship to Tenchi.

Dragonballs

Quick Plot

Dragonballs is the series that the infamous Dragon Ball Z built upon. This series tells the story of Goku, a strange child found by a kindly old martial arts master named Gohan while out on a walk. Goku turns out to be quite different from the usual foundling, as he posesses monkeylike tail and extraordinary strength. As time passes Gohan dies and Goku is left alone in the mountains. One day a city girl named Bulma arrives to this remote region hunting for magical balls that can grant wishes. She finds that Goku posesses one of these items and teams up with him to find the rest. As the series progresses Goku becomes stronger and trains under Master Roshi, along with his friends Krillan and Yamcha. They compete in several fighting tournaments, save the villages and the world from ruthless organizations and rulers, and train like crazy in between. It ends around the time that Goku finally wins a world fighting championship and marries Chi-chi. Dragon Ball Z picks up his life five years after this point.

My Opinion

This series is pretty good. If the show wasn't edited heavily I'm sure it would be much funnier, but it still comes through as a good watch. The amount of humor is higher than in the Dragonball Z series, the battles are usually less serious and filled with Goku's good hearted antics. Most of the characters are well rounded and interact well. The artwork is dated, but most things from the 80's are. It still has vibrant color and nice designs for most of the characters and scenery.

Dragon Ball Z

Quick Plot

There are several chapters in the long Dragonball Z series. The show begins about five years after Goku, his wife Chi-Chi, and their son Gohan settled down after the last world fighting tournament in Dragonballs. In the Saiyan Saga, we learn of Goku, Gohan, Krillian, and Piccolo, the greatest fighters on Earth. It is soon revealed that Goku(and therefore partly his son Gohan) are of a almost extinct race of warriors called Sayians, who can transform into giant apelike creatures under a full moon. This series covers the earth warriors' battles against Raditz, Nappa, and Vegita, the last of the Sayians, who come to earth to recruit Goku to join their evil planet conquering. The concept of the magic wish granting dragonballs is reintroduced when Goku is killed early on and must be revived with a wish in order to fight Vegeta and Nappa.

After the final battle in this saga, the Namek Saga begins. Gohan, Bulma, and Krillian must travel to the planet Namek to find its dragonballs to wish back their fallen comrades. They find Vegeta and an even greater power, Frieza, competing for the balls and must sneak around until Goku arrives. Vegeta finds himself allied with the earthlings when they challenge Frieza, and Piccolo is revived to help. A great battle finally results as Goku and Frieza face off one on one. Goku first transforms into a Super Sayian near the end of this battle.

After this climatic battle, the Cell Saga begins. The mad scientist Dr. Gero, an old enemy of Goku's, has returned to seek revenge on the newly returned Goku. Gero creates three killer androids and a creature made of cells from all the Z fighters. This creature, aptly named Cell, soon becomes a threat to the whole planet as it absorbs the androids and reaches a level far above that of a supersaiyan. Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, and Trunks, Vegeta's future son, must all train hard to reach a new level of power in time for the great contest Cell is planning.

The last part of the series, the Buu Saga, covers the epic battle against the magical creature Buu that causes most of the world to be destroyed. Buu has been summoned by an ancient wizard and it is up to the surviving fighters to defeat him. Goku is resurrected from the dead again and with the help of Gohan and Vegeta is the best hope for destroying the nearly unbeatable Buu.

My Opinion

This series is slightly boring between battles, but the animation is fair and there is an element of humor present at times. Halfway through the Namek saga the voices are changed and the animation becomes sloppier. The action remains pretty well nonstop throughout. The characters are followed for years by the show, so they become well known and evolve alot over the course of the show. The major reason this show gets four stars is that it has entertained me for an overwhelming sheer number of hours over the years. That counts for something.

Digimon Season One

Description

Seven kids at a summer camp find themselves transported to a digital world. They meet special digimon there, who help them battle the various minions and bosses who are attempting to conquer the Digital and real worlds through various schemes. By helping their digimon digivolve into more powerful forms, the kids save the digital world several times, but everytime they do a new boss arises and they find themselves back at square one again. The seasons and characters change every year, but the basic kid-digimon bonds and fighting evil to save the world plot continues. A bit repetitive but humurous series. It has been called a pokemon ripoff, but the plots are about as different as you can get and besides the premise of fighting monsters, nothing else is similiar. You might as well call Gundams and Robotechs ripoffs because they both have giant mecha.

Pokemon

Quick Plot

The main character of this series is a boy named Ash Catchem, who travels the land with Pikachu and other pocket monsters fighting tournaments and winning badges. He meets two companions, Misty and Brock, and they travel together on a quest to 'catch em all' and 'become pokemon masters'. His major enemy is Team Rocket, James, Jesse, and Meowth, who want to steal his Pikachu for obscure reasons. And that is the whole story. No evil to thwart, no growing of the characters, just a big game. As the show grows older the team moves from land to land, earning badges, defeating rivals and Team Rocket, and finding more and more pokemon. Even at the reduced size of a pokeball, collecting all of the animals shown would require Scrooge Mcduck's money bin to hold them all. Along the way it could be argued that Ash gains wisdom, confidence, and skill with his pokemon, but the show makes a point every now and then of saying Ash is still an overconfident novice. The fact that all he frigging knows comes off his Pokedex doesn't say much of him either.

My Opinion

This is one of the most simplest plots I've ever seen. It very quickly becomes evident that this show is one of the longest and most repetitve series ever created. Every episode follows along the same boring path. If it had come from anything but gameboy, this show would be unbelieveable. The animation also is generally weak. This is one of the harshest reviews Ive dealt out, but I have no choice. I would not reccommend this show to anyone over 10, but to be fair I do not think it was intended for people over 10. Some kiddie shows can pull off being watched by older people, but Pokemon just doesnt cut it. The plot has no twists and follows very linearly along the path of fighting battles to win badges. It follows the game fairly close I suppose. On this page all animes are rated equally, so Pokemon gets the lowest because it is simply unamusing and boring.

Sailor Moon

Description

This is the story of Serena, a junior highschool girl who lives in Tokyo. Serena is a bit of a crybaby, a bit of a ditz, but she is a pretty nice girl. One day her cat, Luna, suddenly begins talking to Serena. Serena learns that she has the ability to transform into Sailor Moon, a crime and evil fighting semi-superhero. She eventually teams up with four other Sailor Scouts and eventually her boyfriend Darrien, aka Tuxedo Mask. They are the reincarnations of the Sailor Scouts who defended the Solar system ages ago. Together they fight evils like the Negaverse, energy stealing elves, some people who want to steal Serena and Darrian's future daughter, and some heart snatchers. The animation is pretty good, though not completely up to today's standards. Though fairly repetive, the plot is good. They made many many many episodes of this show and it was one of the longest running shows on Toonami. They also made several movies, which were also very good. I watched this show more than a guy should probably admit because overall it is just plain good. This is one show I wondered if I should give a perfect score purely from its entertainment value, but the repetitive plots of each story arc lost the series a star.

Gundam Wing

Quick Plot

Gundam Wing is set in a different universe and timeline from the Universal Century saga that included the One Year War, Amuro Ray, and Zeon. This series, the After Colony timeline, paints a very similiar portrait of the near future. Here the space colonies and the Earth Alliance are at arms over independance, as usual, but this time the Earth Federation is a dominating presence that represses the liberties of the colonies. The Earth Alliance owes much of its power to the OZ group, an elite aristocratic association that has produced many of the top warriors and mobile suits that the Alliance uses.

There are five groups of near earth colonies , LP1 through 5, and each colony has secretely developed a Gundam in an attempt to win their freedom. The pilots of each Gundam were selected and sent to earth to wage guerrila warfare on the Alliance and OZ. Each customized mobile suit has different weapons and styling which fit their pilots. The Gundam pilots work independantly at first but find that they must work together to survive once their colonies abandon them and Oz takes over control of the Alliance. The most powerful Gundam, Wing, piloted by Heero Yuy, usually somewhat leads the others because of its flight capability and its great power. This Gundam is later replaced by the much more powerful Wing Zero Gundam. The Gundams are often forced to flee from the numerous OZ forces, especially from the top OZ pilot, Zechs Merquise.

My Opinion

This is a good series to demonstrate the wide variety of ideas and stories anime is capable of showing. The animation and story are top notch. The Gundam pilots are truly on their own, fighting literally against the whole world. The characters must band together to fight for what they believe in, true independance for the colonies, and they finally learn this. The politics of this series are heavy and frequently changing, and enemies are often soon allies. A good series balancing mecha, character developement, and politics.

Mobile Suit Gundam

Quick Plot

This is the series that started the whole Gundam saga. It is the begining of the Universal Century sage. In the future a great war is waged between the Zion Empire, based in certain space colonies, and the Earth Federation, based on Earth. Zion wants independance for the space colonies and to this end develops humanoid fighting machines, usually a variation of the Zaku, for space combat. The Earth Federation eventually creates a mobile suit of its own, the RX-78-2 Gundam. When the colony housing the Gundam comes under attack from Zion, it falls upon a fifteen year old boy, Amuro Ray, to pilot the Gundam and defend his friends. The colony is dealt a mortal blow by the invaders, and Amuro, the Gundam, and the few survivors of the colony end up on the ship White Base, which becomes the Gundam's base of operations. Amuro spends the rest of the series improving his skills, fighting Zion pilot Char Aznable, and generally destroying anything that faces him.

My Opinion

This series is definitly dated in artwork and style, but it is a classic. This series provides the basis for all the Universal Century stories that follow and introduces the Gundam. The show becomes a bit boring at times due to the long storyline. Amuro comes off as an asshole quite regularly, as does several other people. That's war I guess. Loveable characters aren't this show's draw, it is giant fighting mecha with loads of weapons, attachments, and shapes.

Gundam: The 08th MS Team

Quick Plot

This series is the second in the Universal Century timeline, chronologically. It occurs during the latter parts of Mobile Suit Gundam. The Earth Federation forces in Asia have recieved 12 Rx-79(G)'s, ground type Gundams. One of the Asian units, the 08th Mobile Suit Team, is the focus of this show. Lt. Shiro Amada has been choosen to lead this five person team consisting of three Gundam Pilots and two support personnel who man a hovertruck. They fight in jungle battles against Zeon forces fleeing from defeat in Europe. The 08th MS Team are searching for a hidden Zeon research base which is working on a incredibly powerful mobile armour. The team is rather ragtag, but on the whole very capable. They battle against defending Zaku's and the uncompleted mobile armour several times as they attempt to discover the Zeon base. Complicating matters is the fact that Shiro is falling in love with the Zeon prototype's test pilot Aina Sahirin, the sister of the mobile armour's creator. The two soon find themselves as unwilling enemies on the battlefield and must decide if their loyalties are more important than their feelings.

My Opinion

Though very short, this series is one of my favorite Gundam series. The animation is very crisp. The characters are more mature and sensible than the usual Gundam heroes. This show does not show huge story arcs that encompass major battles across the planet and space, but instead gives the view of regular troopers sludging it out in their back corner of the battlefield. The Gundams used by these troopers are not the nearly invincible super suits that they become in the hands of Newtypes such as Amuro Ray and Char Aznoble, they are far more likely to be defeated or damaged. These prototype Gundams and their more grunt type pilots create an atmosphere far from the usual heroics of these series. The ideas of loyalty to friends and love versus that of nations are explored throughout this interesting sidenote to the One Year War.

Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket

Quick Plot

This short series is also in the Universal Century timeline. It follows the attempt of Zeon forces to destroy a new prototype Gundam, the RX-78NT1, which was specially made for newtype pilots. When the prototype is moved to space colony Side 6, Zeon follows and sends in a small undercover task force to locate the Gundam and destroy it. One member of this team, Bernie Wiseman, happens to be discovered by the curious Al, a local kid. Al threatens to reveal Bernie's role as a Zeon spy unless they make him a member of their team. Al and Bernie play a crucial role in discovering the prototype's location, but are the only ones left alive after a failed sabatoge attempt on the Gundam. Zeon, desparate to destroy this Gundam, decides to nuke the colony if Bernie cannot destroy it. Al and Bernie must elude the authorities and repair a wrecked Zaku in order to take the Gundam down and save the colony.

My Opinion

I like this series. The animation is dated, but the story is very good. This is the only Gundam series that tells the story almost exclusively from the side of a Zeon character. The story explores the idea that these soldiers have no grudge against people of the opposite forces, they are merely following orders and doing what they think is right. Bernie has no problems with Chris, a known Federation soldier, although he didn't know that she was piloting the Gundam. Bernie is a unique person to be the focus of a series, he is not an ace, he is not even a great rookie, he is merely an average soldier with a Zaku, one of thousands who are usually fodder for a Gundam. Although the ending is rather sad, in ways, it makes sense and provides closure for this pocket war that no other Gundam series has had.

Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory

Quick Plot

This Universal Century series follows the attempt of a splinter group of the surviving Zeon forces to strike back against the Earth Federation. This force, the Delaz Fleet, manages to steal a prototype Gundam equipped and armored for nuclear warfare. This Gundam, RX-78GP02A, had a tactical nuclar weapon loaded when it was stolen, making the Federation fear that the Delaz Fleet would use it against the Earth. The federation sends the ship Albion, which carries the RX-78GP01 prototype, several GM's, and Guncannons, to battle the Delaz fleet and either destroy or retrieve the GP02. The pilot of GP01, Kou Uraki, must face the Zeon ace pilot Gato and attempt to stop a new Zeon-Federation war. Anaheim Electronics, a government grant firm which makes mobile suit, has sent out a systems analysist, Nina Purpleton, to oversee the prototype suits, and accompanies the Albion on its quest to stop Delaz's nefarious Operation Stardust.

My Opinion

I liked this series pretty well, though not for the story as much as for the great battle scenes. Getting to see Gundams trashed and giant mobile armors duke it out makes this series worth watching. The story itself is good, but overweighted with the whining of Kou and his miserable attempts at wooing Nina. Not to mention Kou and Gato's crappy little rivalry. The artwork is great on this series, the mechanical aspects are really worked out well. While most Gundam series focus alot on the battles and mecha, this series shines at those aspects while not being that good at others.

G Gundam

Quick Plot

Most of Earth's population (except for the poor) have decided to leave earth and form nations in orbiting space colonies which are all named Neo-whatevertheiroriginalcountrywas, i.e. NeoJapan, NeoChina. The nations are all bound together under one leader nation, which changes every four years. People of the future don't rely on elections or even wars to determine who is the leader. They rely on Gundam wrestling matches held on Earth. Each Nation creates a Gundam and chooses a fighter, and the winner's nation becomes the leader for four more years. The main characters are NeoJapan's fighter, Domon Kasshu and Rain Mikamura, his mechanic. Domon pilots the Burning Gundam in match after match, usually winning. Eventually a dark force arises and Domon is forced to unite with NeoFrance, Russia, America, and China's fighters to save the already destroyed earth from becoming...more destroyed I suppose.

My Opinion

I have problems with this series. It is a low in the Gundam saga. The premise is just plain stupid and is something backyard wrestlers would make up. Each country has been reduced to their most basic stereotype when their country's Gundam was designed. Canada has a lumberjack Gundam, India has a cobra Gundam, Egypt has a mummy Gundam, France has a faggy Napoleon looking Gundam, China has a dragon Gundam, and America has a boxing Gundam. WTF. Half of the Gundams look so damn stupid that they have lost before they even began. I did not like this show. Allenby Beardsley and Argo Gulski were the only two characters I didn't want to hit.

SDG Gundam

Quick Plot

SDG is a more kid friendly Gundam series. Instead of being fearsome mecha piloted by often angst filled teens in wars of independance and power, the mobile suits of SDG are sentinent beings without pilots. And they are about four feet tall. And hang out with a ten year old boy. And have big creepy eyes. This is the world of the Super Deformed Gundams. Or as they like it, the Super Defense Gundam Force, or the Super Dimensional Gaurd. The show is a parody of all things Gundam. The main characters are Captain Gundam, who resembles the Gundam Alex(RX-78 NT-1), Zero the Winged Knight, who is Gundam Wing Zero, and Gundam Bakunetsumaru, who is new to me. These three protect the world of Neotopia from the Dark Axis, a Zeon mobile suit populated force bent on conquering the different dimensions. Zapper Zaku, Grappler Gouf, and Destroyer Dom are the three usual fighters up against the Gundam force. Zero and Bakunetsumaru are from a different dimension from Captain, where the Dark Axis has already attacked.

My Opinion

SDG is actually entertaining to watch even though it isn't as serious as the usual gundam series. The characters are a little creepy at first, but they grow on you. Something is just a little wrong with a gundam having actual eyes. The storyline is certainly better than G Gundam's crapfest. This anime keeps my attention even though it is extremely silly at times.

Outlaw Star

Quick Plot

This highly comedic show tells the story of Gene Starwind, Jim Hawking, Melfina, Aisha ClanClan, and Suzuka. These characters comprise the crew of the grappler ship Outlaw Star. The ship, a joint venture of space pirates and military forces, is a highly advanced vessel created to navigate the mysterious Galactic Leylines. The Leylines are rumoured to be a place of immense power and treasure. The ship is stolen before it can be used, and Gene happens to come into possesion of it. They decide to search for the Leylines while trying to avoid or fight pirates, bounty hunters, thier debtors, and once even a sea demon. The major problem with their quest is the enormous expense needed to keep such an advanced ship armed, supplied and maintenanced. Working from planet to planet, they get closer and closer to their goal.

My Opinion

The animation, plot, and characters all shine out, making Outlaw Star among the best animes shown on Toonami. A few of the space pirate character designs are a bit far out there, but mostly they are good. The show keeps a good pace at times, but slows down here and there with small side plots.

After a WWII US firebombing raid on Japan destroys his home and fatally wounds his mother, a teenage boy named Seita must take care of his young sister Setsuka in a time when resources were stretched to their max and people's hearts were hardened by the continous hardships of the war. Since their mother dies from the firebomb that destroyed their home and their father is in the Imperial Navy, They originally move in with an aunt, but she resents having two more mouths to feed and having to deal with two more children in the house. Seita soon gets sick of this and tries to survive in a small cavelike shelter with his sister. Despite Seita's efforts to live off the land and his meager supplies, he soon must turn to stealing crops to keep them alive. As Setsuka falls ill from malnutrition Seita falls upon his last resort, the meager savings their family kept in the bank. He arrives with food for the bed ridden Setsuka, but it is too late, and she dies. I do not think I am giving away any major spoilers here since it is made clear in the first five minutes of the film that both her and Seita die.

My Opinion

I kind of hated to lower this film down to 3 stars. It's a studio Ghibli film, though not by Hayao Miyazaki. It really is a good movie, but I strongly think it is one that should be rented instead of bought. I watched it once, and really don't want to watch it over and over again like I do with some of my series. The movie is beautiful, well written, and deserves every award it has got, I do not dispute this. The movie is short, only about 70 minutes long, but somehow I still found myself getting bored a few times. I am not sure how that happened because the plot flowed smoothly and there wasnt really any downtime in the movie, it just struck me as a bit tedious. There really isn't much action in the movie, aside from a couple firebombing escapes and a farmer savagely beating Seita, and of course there is no comedy, this is meant to be a serious peice. I think that the movie would have been better if they hadn't shown that both children die during the first five minutes. The only suspense left in the movie was how exactly they would die. I recommend that everyone see this movie because it is a wonderful example of the emotional drama that anime can portray. They made this film beautifully and gave it an atmosphere that fit it perfectly. I cannot recommend actually buying this title, however, it is not one that most people would want to watch more than once or twice.

Love Hina

Quick Plot

The series follows the life of prep school student Keitaro Uramishi as he struggles to get into Tokyo University and find his childhood sweetheart. After his grandmother leaves to tour the onsen of the world, Keitaro is given the job as apartment manager(landlord/building superintendant)of an all girls dorm, the Hinata apartments. He quickly runs afoul of several of the women, who are understandably reluctant to accept a male manager. Mitsuni, the sly one, immediately tries to trade a grope of her breasts in exchange for a grope. Naru Narusegawa repeatedly knocks Keitaro around, and Motoko, a kendo swordfighter, does her best to slice him to ribbons. The hyperactive and young Suu uses her brilliant toys and kicks to keep keitaro constantly under siege. The only boarder who doesn't try to make Keitaro miserable is Shinobu, a young girl who he invites to move in after her parents divorce. Keitaro tries to keep a brave face as he simultaneously tries to study for entrance exams, dodges multiple attacks, and tries to find the girl he long ago promised to go to Tokyo U. with. He soon finds himself torn between his dream of finding that girl and falling in love with Naru. The girls eventually warm up to Keitaro, at least to the point that they stop trying to scam or kill him. Naru keeps up her hard hitting punches whenever she thinks Keitaro did anything wrong or perverted, but she slowly starts to develop strong feelings for him. Things are further complicated when they meet Mutsumi Otohime, a girl who openly admits to liking Keitaro alike and who may just be the little girl he made the promise with. Naru, Shinobu, and Mutsumi all develop feelings for Keitaro that range from a crush to genuine love, but since only Mutsumi will ever admit to this, leaving the other two girls struggling to hide their feelings and still keep Keitaro's attention.

My Opinion

I recently purchased this series after seeing an AMV featuring it(the same thing with Hand Maid May). At first I wasn't sure that it was all I was hoping it would be. During the first episode Keitaro was frankly a bit annoying and it seemed like the plot was revolving around him getting totally thrashed by girls for any reason whatsoever. Luckily the plot began building and by the second or third episode I was hooked. The animation is very nice, having all been done on computers. Music was good overall. I am not someone who usually even notices the overall background music(unless it is blatent like in Cowboy Bebop), but the main theme is warm and catchy, and the numerous vocals that pepper the series are also good. The relationships that develop and change among the characters are deep and each main character gets a show or two focusing on their past, abilities, and general relationships with the people around them. Their are 24 episodes, which allows for enough time for everyone to be throughly familiar and fleshed out and for numerous adventures to befall all the characters. I highly recommend this series; it is well worth the money to watch this plot unfold.

Love Hina Christmas Movie

Quick Plot

It is christmas time at the Love Hina apartments and, as usual, Keitaro, Naru, and Mutsomi are studying their asses off for the Tokyo University entrance exams. The movie occurs the winter after episode 24 or 25(a bonus episode included on the Christmas movie dvd). Keitaro finally musters up his courage and tells Naru that he loves her but she is being unuasually cold to him suddenly. When he hears from Suu that Naru has a special gift for him, Keitaro dances for joy on the roof of Hinata, but slips and falls. Keitaro badly sprains his ankle and is stuck on crutches for the remainder of the movie. When he stumbles upon Naru in Tokyo giving Seta a gift, Keitaro thinks that Naru is falling in love with Seta again and runs off very depressed. Naru, who had been cold to Keitaro in an attempt to make him focus on studying, begins looking for Keitaro in Tokyo along with the other girls. As Christmas Eve wears on Naru becomes desparate to find the stricken Keitaro before the clock strikes midnight.

My Opinion

This was a very good christmas movie. The characters seem to have matured a bit since the tv series. Naru wasn't as violent as she usually is, and Keitaro seems to have more courage now. The plot moves along swiftly but is loaded heavily with humor. The movie has a different feel than usual, since half of it occurs in bustling Tokyo instead of in the sleepy Hinata Springs. The bonus episode 25 was a nice addition and made the shortness of the main feature not so apparant. Overall a solid addition to the Love Hina francise.

Love Hina Spring Movie

Quick Plot

After staying up late studying with Naru, Keitaro falls into a daydreaming sleep during the spring entrance exams and wakes up with only 5 minutes to complete the whole thing. Thinking that he has failed the exam, Keitaro flees Hinata and boards a ship with to Pararakelse Island. On board he meets up with Seta, who is on another archological expedition to the island. Keitaro arrives on the island the hard way and meets a young girl named Nyamo. Nyamo is searching for her grandfather, who disappeared while looking for the lost city of the turtle worshipping people. Keitaro decides to help her look and prepares to cross the long deserts and jungle that lay on the island. Meanwhile Naru finds out from Seta where Keitaro is and sets out to find him. She joins Keitaro and Nyamo on their quest, but soon are pursued by all the Hinata residents.

My Opinion

This movie contained several key plot elements. The perpetual cycle of failing entrance exams comes to a head in this movie. Shinobu tries hard to deal with her feelings for Keitaro and her lack of confidence. Naru is forced to look hard at her own feelings for Keitaro. The plot is humorous as always, the animation crisp and colorful, and the action stays steady. This movie cannot be missed by fans of Love Hina.

Love Hina Again

Quick Plot

Love Hina again is a collection of 3 OVA episodes that concludes the Love Hina saga. Now that Keitaro and Naru have finally been accepted into Tokyo University, things seem to be falling into place for the two. Disaster soon strikes when Keitaro manages to break his leg and has to miss the first semester of classes. When his leg heals he decides to go off with Seta for awhile to some archeological sites. While Keitaro is overseas his stepsister, Kanako, shows up to manage the apartments until he returns. The girls become furious at Kanako's devious and harsh ways and realize how easy they had it with Keitaro in charge. Keitaro soon returns, but Kanako hangs around out of love for him. And it's not a sisterly kind of love. Keitaro, being somewhat normal, thinks of Kanako only as a little sister and keeps his sights set on Naru. Kanako decides to get Keitaro no matter what and begins a campaign to make Keitaro hers forever. After a cursed annex to the Hinata apartments puts a spell on Keitaro and Kanako, Naru must decide once and for all what her feelings for him are and how far she will go to save him from the spell.

My Opinion

The finale of Love Hina tries to wrap up some of the prospective relationships that have developed during the series. Seta begins tentative advancements towards Haruka, Keitaro buys Naru a ring, Shinobu admits her feelings for Keitaro, and even Motoko seems more open about her feelings. The animation is beautiful throughout the three episodes, and the music fits the moods perfectly. A beautiful and funny ending to a great series.

Hand Maid May

Quick Plot

The basic plot is that a college student, Kazuya, accidently orders a doll sized maid robot, Cyberdoll(CBD) May. Kazuya's dream is to build a AI robot, so he is fascinated by the tiny May's ability to move and think by herself. Other full-sized CBD's soon show up, and along with his athletic neighbor Kasumi, they all jealously vie for Kazuya's attention. Kazuya's main problem is his 'friend' Nanbera, who wants to split Kazuya and May up and generally ruin Kazuya's life.

My Opinion

This series is very nice but far too short. There are only 11 episodes so the action is pretty constant; a new character is introduced almost every episode as a result. Adding much humor is Kazuya's best friend and worst enemy Nanbara, who must be seen to be believed. The first thing that he says to Kazuya is "At the donut's center you will find a hole!" which shows how random he is. I have saw this series criticized quite a bit online. The major criticisms are that it is similiar to both Tenchi and Love Hina in having many women in love with a nerdy guy, and that it is 'hentai like.' The show does show many panty shots and bouncing breasts, but it does not show anything more than that. They serve mainly as a way to make the main character blush more. The animation is nice and fluid, the characters are remarkably well rounded (with 9 main characters being introduced in the first seven or eight episodes, the fact that they are all memorable is a real wonder,) and the artwork is very nice and bright. This is a fun story that keeps me laughing everytime I watch it. I bought the collectors set after seeing a AMV featuring May, Kasumi, and Kazuya's relationship, and I am very happy with it. The price is around $80 on average, which is a pretty good amount for 11 episodes, but I feel like I got my money's worth.

Big O

Quick Plot

This is the story of a city at least 40 years in the future. The whole world seems to have lost their memory 40 years ago and now mainly reside in the domed Paradigm City. Roger Smith, a negotiater, has somehow found a huge robot from the past, Big O, which he uses to save the city from attacks of usually mechanical enemies which arise. He is assisted by Norman, his butler, mechanic, and general helper, and R. Dorothy Wainwright, an android. Roger must fight both to save the city and find out what happened to everyone's memory.

My Opinion

This story is very good. I worried that Season 1 would be the last, but Season 2 has now been released. Dorothy's dry wit, Norman's exploits, and Roger's ingenuity make the show very enjoyable. The fight scenes are worked in well usually, which is a change from some shows that include battles just to include battles. Big O's retro design and the fact that everyone is using technology that they have no idea how to control keeps things interesting. The ending of Season 2 is quite weird, however, and I must say I didn't really follow it. I won't spoil it, but it pretty well brings the series to some sort of conclusion, though not really a final one in ways. Overall Season 1 was much better.

Princess Mononoke

Quick Plot

This movie follows the journey made by the young warrior Ashitaka as he searches for the cure to a curse that is slowly consuming his body. He recieves this curse after slaying a forest demon that was threatening his village. His search leads him far away, all the way to a fortified village called Iron Town. This village is at odds with both its samurai neighbors and the gods of the nearby forest. Since the major occupation of this town is smelting iron, the villagers must cut down vast swatched of the forst to stoke their fires. This has angered the gods of the forest - they see their home quickly dissappearing. San, a human girl raised by a wolf god, constantly strives to destroy the town to halt its pollution and destruction of her forest. Ashitaka must find a way to save the town and the forest from destroying one another, not to mention find a way to save his own life.

My Opinion

This film is the first Studio Gibhli film that I ever saw. This is probably one of the more famous anime movies out there. I highly recommend seeing this movie. It's simply beautiful. The film is very well drawn and has a famous voice cast. The scenery is breathtaking, and the story keeps a fast pace without losing its sense of overall peacefullness. The action scenes are well rendered and give an impression of speed and force well. A few of the scenes are fairly gory, but nothing is really over the top.

Robotech

Quick Plot

A massive alien spacecraft suddenly crashes to earth on a small island, disrupting the worldwide wars gripping the planet. Fearing an immenient alien invasion, a new government, the Unified Nations of Earth, is formed to keep the peace on earth and defend it from attacks. The new government quickly begins repair on the badly damaged craft and over the years Macross City, a small city of 70,000 people, grows up around the ship. Eventually the repair work is finished and the day of the first test flight of the ship, dubbed the SDF-1, arrives. Using technologies discovered within the ship, a large number of Veritech fighter planes have been created that can transform from plane to Batteloid robots. One of the greatest Veritech pilots aboard the SDF-1 is Commander Roy Fokker, who flies the Skull One. On the day of the test flight his longtime friend Rick Hunter arrives to see the liftoff of the huge ship.

Before the ship can even leave the ground, they are attacked by aliens, the Zentraedis, who have come to recover the lost ship. Rick is caught up in the battle and manages to save a local girl, Lin Minmei, from the aliens. The SDF-1, in danger of being destroyed, decides to make a fold jump away from the earth, even though this has never been tested. The ship survives the fold but manages to transport the entire island and some of the surrounding ocean almost to pluto's orbit. The city and it's inhabitants are quickly rescued and they soon rebuild Macross city inside the collosal SDF-1. The ship now must make its long voyage back to the Earth and withstand repeated attacks by the Zentraedi forces that threaten to destroy them. Rick Hunter soon becomes a Veritech pilot in order to protect his friends, but after he becomes close to Commander Lisa Hayes, his relationship with the rising star Minmei becomes strained.

My Opinion

What a difference six or seven years makes! I have finally seen this show again many years after I first fell in love with it. Robotech was the first anime that I can remember watching, and it is the show that triggered my years long love of both mecha and anime in general. This was one of the first shows to premiere on Toonami, where I watched it religiously. I remember them airing the first two sagas, but the second saga's mediocricy compared to the first always seemed odd until I learned that it was actually another series edited to seem part of the Macross continium. This saga alone is the adapted form of Macross and it could easily be considered a classic by itself. The show's artwork may show it's age, but the characterizations and mechanical designs are where this show really excels. The characters in this series are portrayed very well and their relationships form a literal space opera that is rarely seen these days. The graphics are on par with the original Gundam series, but the battles are smooth and flawless and the storyline is gripping. It is hard to really find characters that you don't like in this series, as all seem very realistic and likeable, with the exception of Khyron and his ilk.

Monster Rancher

Quick Plot

Genki, a young boy who is crazy about video games, recieves a demo of a new playstation Monster Rancher game. Upon playing the game, he is transported to a land where the monsters are real and interact with the humans in various ways. Some of the monsters are friendly helpers, others are sinister enemies who wish to conquer the world. Most of the monsters are simply caught in the middle of the overlord Muu's war. Genki meets up with a human girl, Molly, and soon teams up with a diverse group of monsters devoted to stopping Muu's reign.

My Opinion

This is a good fun series that almost makes you forget it was made to promote the Playstation Monster Rancher franchise. Luckily the show is much better than the aforementioned games. It has alot of good comedy, even though it is definately aimed at younger viewers. The plot is suprisingly complicated for such a simple looking show. The artwork is nice and clean; nothing fancy but definately a 90's show. I recommend watching it if it comes on again, but I dont think I would spend money to buy it.

Ronin Warriors

Quick Plot

This tale pits 5 warriors with magical armor against an ancient demon lord and his 4 minions. Ryo, the leader of the 5 Ronin Warriors, must gather his friends to battle the demon lord Talba and drive him back into his own dimension. Three people, the only remaining people around who arent devil zombies, help the warriors. A woman named Mia, a kid named Yuli, and an old man referred to as the Ancient One assist the Ronin warriors in their battles

My Opinion

The artwork is a bit dated looking, but overall the series looks good. The plot is pretty good and actually has a well defined back story to this war. The only complaint I have is that the series became a bit boring over time. Plus when their magical armor transformed onto them, the Ronin Warriors looked uncomfortably like those transformation scenes from sailor moon when the scouts transformed.

FLCL - Fooly Cooly, Furi Kuri

Quick Plot

This show's plot is a bit hazy. Even after watching the entire 6 episodes at least twice the show is still too chaotic to really pin down. The main character Haruko, is a blonde who rides an orange Vespa into a small town and runs over a boy named Naota. Naota afterwords suffers from robotic creatures bursting forth from his forhead and running amok. The first robot to burst forth, , is actually a helpful one reportedly produced by the nearby Medical Mechanica factory. This robot, Canti, battles the robots that later burst out of Naota's head, usually by eating Naota and then firing him out like a shell from a howitzer. Haruko uses her guitar to help battle the creatures, and the show grinds on towards the unknown.

My Opinion

Well, the show is hilarious out of plain wierdness if nothing else. A giant clothes iron shaped robot factory is a major landmark of this town. The credits has shots of a real orange Vespa cruising around town. The robot explodes out of the boy's head. He pilots the robot, but when the battle is over the robot basically craps out the kid. This series is fun even without knowing what is going on. When you pay close attention you see the plot is that Haruko is somehow trying to free an entity from Medical Mechanica, but the short series moves to fast to really explain it all very well. They fit an amazing amount of insanity in each episode and the show simply has to be watched to explain.

Vash spends the series dodging the bullets of multiple bounty hunters, attempting to help as many people as he can, and confronting the secrets of his troubled past.

My Opinion

I love this show. I knew that I had to buy it ever since I first saw it. This show really rocks. Trigun has both a good plot and a lot of humor. Vash's crazy antics in the fields of love and fighting keep the show entertaining, while the mystery of why Vash is a wanted man keeps the show interesting.

Quick Plot

This is the story of Kagome,a girl from modern Tokyo who is magically transported to the Warring States era of Japan via a mystic well on her family's shrine. She is shocked to find that in this era, Japan is literally crawling with all sorts of demons. Kagome quickly finds herself in danger from one of these demons due to a magic jewel inside her body, the Shikon No Tama. Finding a half demon dog boy named Inuyasha pinned to a tree with a magical arrow, she releases him when he promises to protect her from the demon. Once released he does protect her, but only because he wants the jewel for himself. The jewel is seperated from her body and accidently split into many shards during another demon attack. Inuyasha and Kagome set out to recover the shards, Kagome out of duty and Inuyasha out of a desire to use the jewel to become a full demon. On their journey they team up with a Kitsune cub named Shippo, a lechorous buddist monk named Miroku, and a demon slayer girl named Sango. Their journey slowly changes from just gathering shards to fighting evils such as Naraku, a shapeshifting demon with incredible powers.

My Opinion

Very good story. The show is nice and bright, the characters are well drawn, and the plot moves along nicely. Some episodes get a bit repetitive, but then the cycle breaks and it gets good again. Great mix of comedy and action really. Overall this is a good series to watch. I have not actually seen all of the episodes yet, since they haven't all been released, but I'm eagerly waiting.

Betterman

Quick Plot

This show involves the struggle between humanity and a mysterious entity known as Algernon. Caught up in this battle are Hinoki, a mecha pilot, and Keita, her childhood friend, who accidently becomes her copilot. The plot is complex because they wanted it that way I suppose. Betterman is a man who becomes a monster by eating flowers growing out of dead people. He then uses his powers to help defeat the minions of Algernon.

My Opinion

This anime tries hard to be good. This anime fails at good. It is ok. It is something to watch if you've never seen it before and there is nothing better on. Faced with Pokemon vs this show, I would watch this show, but I might flip the channels back and forth a bit. The show is dark and constantly tries to keep up an air of mystery, thrills, and suspense. Sadly, it just lacks anything to make all that atmosphere seem necessary. The show just becomes annoying and boring. The plot is a bit too vauge and never makes complete sense.

Blue Gender

Quick Plot

Kuji, a man cyrogenically frozen because of a fatal disease, is awoken in the year 2031 by a military squad sent to retrieve him. He soon seems to develop feelings for a woman named Marlene, who is part of the squad sent to bring him and other frozen 'sleepers' back to their space colony. The squad is killed one by one by the Blue, leaving only Marlene and Kuji in a desperate struggle towards the space port.

My Opinion

This show seems rather thought out plot wise. It is a linear plot that, much like a mission, goes from objective to objective to keep the story moving towards its finale. It is a pretty good series overall and has a nice mixture of action scenes and emotional scenes where the characters deal with the war raging around them. Some of the characters seem neurotic quite often, but this is an essential part of the plot, so it is forgiven.

Crest of the Stars / Banner of the Stars

Quick Plot

Crest of the Stars follows the young Lord Jinto's journey to the military academy of the Abh, a race of genetically modified for space humans. Their primary characteristics are blue hair and the pointed ears of their royal family. Assigned to escort Jinto is the Abh princess Lafiel, the granddaughter of the Abh Empress, who is currently a cadet pilot aboard a patrol ship. The trip seems to be going well, as Jinto and Lafiel soon strike up a good friendship. The story starts to get more action packed as the patrol ship they are aboard is attacked by a force that wants to destroy the Abh Empire. Jinto and Lafiel escape and have a series of adventures dodging enemies and escaping traps on their way to the Abh capital.

Banner of the Stars follows Jinto and Lafiel's adventures after they graduate from the military academy. Lafiel is the captain of the Assualt Ship Basroil, and she has selected Jinto as her supply officer. They are embroiled in the war that began in Crest of the Stars, fighting the United Mankind forces. It pretty well follows the Abh fleet in the first part of this war.

My Opinion

The story is less action packed then one might think it to be. This is a good thing because the dialogue, while at times a bit stiff, keeps the show interesting even when nothing exciting is happening. They sound really stiff at first, as if the voice acters were not really trying, but by the end they seem much better. Practice makes perfect. The artwork is top notch, and the action scenes are fairly intense. The show tries for humor but fails to really pull it off well because of their stiff speeches. Perhaps they thought since the two main characters were a lord and a royal princess, they would speak very formally, but the characters' attitudes, conversations, and actual tones ruin this attempt. A good show, but they really needed to work a bit more on the dubbing. Banner of the Stars has slightly better voice acting, but overall the two shows are about the same.

Silent Mobius

Quick Plot

When demonlike monsters start attacking Tokyo, a special all woman police force, the Attacked Mystification Police (AMP) is formed. The monsters, Lucifer Hawks, seem to come from another dimension soley to cause havoc and destruction in Tokyo. The show follows the adventures of the AMP as they battle the ever increasing invasion of the Lucifer Hawks. The main character is Katsumi Liqeor, a former secretary recruited into the department for her supernatural abilities. Each member of the force has special talents and abilities that they use to combat the Lucifer Hawks. The show does not focus exclusively on their battles, however, much time is spent on character development for each member of the AMP. The history that led to their current abilities and lifestyles is shown and explained. As the show continues there are twists in the storyline as the relationships between humans and Lucifer Hawks are explored.

My Opinion

Overall a pretty good series. The character development is deep, entertaining, and complex at times. Katsumi's evolution through the series is particularly complex. The characters are all unique and are what really makes the series shine. The plot isn't the greatest, overall, but it mostly holds together. The series can become a bit boring at times, but it has an ok pace. The artwork is nice and crisp, details abound.

Quick Plot

Dual is the story of a boy named Kazuki Yotsuga, who constantly sees visions of giant robots battling in his peaceful city. Everyone merely thinks he is a nutball, as they normally should. Kazuki's lonely life changes completely on the day when Mitsuke Sanada, a very popular girl at his highschool, shows an interest in Kazuki and his visions. It turns out that her father, Ken Sanada, is a scientist dedicated to proving the existance of a dual universe and he thinks that Kazuki is having visions of this alternate world. Due to an accident in Sanada's lab, Kazuki is sent from his world to this world of battling mecha. Mitsuke soon follows to help retrieve him. In this world Ken is the commander of the earth defense force, which is battling the Rara empire for control of the alien technology that makes these robots possible. Kazuki finds himself without a way home and without parents, but he is no longer the mocked and bullied guy that he was in his home dimension. He moves into Ken's house with Mitsuke and Dee, an alien android and joins them in piloting the mecha against Rara. Things get complicated as Kazuki meets Mitsuke Rara, the daughter of the enemy and this dimension's counterpart of Mitsuke Sanada. Mitsuke Rara soon defects to their side out of love for Kazuki and hatred of her parents' wrongful invasions.

My Opinion

I like this show alot. It is not long enough for my tastes, but it makes up for it by packing every episode with a ton of laughs and good character developement. The mecha designs recall Evangelion, which the show loosely imitates in a highly comedic style. The characters are great, everyone was generally at least likeable. The artwork is crisp and beautiful, the opening music is great, and the battles do not dominate the shows like some mecha series do.

Cowboy Bebop

Quick Plot

Cowboy Bebop is a show about a ship. A ship that carries a definitely unique collection of bounty hunters. So far this sounds like a setup for a rough adventure laden plot. Once the characters are introduced the true genius of this show shines through. The main character is named Spike Speigal. He is an expert both at hand to hand fighting and at piloting his custom built racing fighter, the Swordfish II. His past remains mysterious for much of the show, but it is known that he was a member of the Red Dragons syndicate of Mars. The owner of the Bebop is Jet Black, a former ISSP officer from Ganymede. They spend their time crusing around the solar system looking for bounty heads to fill their usually empty safe. During their pursuit of various criminals, they pick up an unusually intelligent Welsh Corgi named Ein, a gambling woman from the past named Faye Valentine, and a young super hacker named Radical Edward. The show keeps both a serious and an irrelevant tone throughout. Each character must face their past in their own way as the series continues.

My Opinion

I like this show alot. The characters are great, the shows vary from hilarious to serious in a heartbeat, and the plot actually makes sense. I have seen this series several times and it still holds my attention easily. I have many episodes that are my favorites, including one involving a modified space shuttle (and yes it was the Columbia, the show was made well before the accident and actually taken out of the rotation for awhile following the disaster) and one where Spike and Jet must hunt for a Betamax player. The music is great and often sets the moods. All in all this show has everything.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Quick Plot

In the year 2000 half of mankind and most coastal cities are wiped out by a mysterious pole melting catastrophe known as Second Impact. These impacts are accompanied by the appearance of two menacing creatures known as Angels, who are defeated by unknown means. The story begins in the year 2015 and mainly involves the secretive agency NERV, an organization created to defend humanity against a return of the Angels. To this end they have developed several experimental giant mecha known as Evangelions. The main character, Shinji Ikari, who is the son of Nerv's commander, is the third child picked to pilot one of these Evangelions. He meets the other 14 year old pilots, Rei Ayanami and Asuka Langley Sohryu, and unwillingly helps to protect Nerv from one Angel after another. The series starts out just following a simple plot of protect Nerv but grows more complex later on. The psychological issues of each character gets explored and the secrets behind the Seele Organization and Nerv itself are slowly revealed. Throughout the series Shinji battles with his need to be accepted and loved by his estranged father. Shinji does not want to pilot the Evangelion, but he must take up each new battle to save NERV.

My Opinion

Evangelion. Easily one of the most famous Anime titles(at least if your anime knowledge isn't restricted to Dragonballs). I had heard of this series for years before finally obtaining the perfect collection of shows and the two ending movies. The first episode was fairly awkward since few things were revealed early on, but that is exactly how it was for Shinji, being suddenly thrust into an entry plug and expected to battle his first Angel. The story began unfolding slowly as the characters were fleshed out a bit and their relationships began to surface. All the way up till episode 9 or 10 the show focused on introducing the pilots and NERV and having them all interact. That's when all hell broke loose. The show flipped into weird mode, leaving behind all the usual rules of interaction and explanation. The characters stopped interacting on that daily basis that defines most shows. The humor elements, while never the selling point, dissappeared and everything became very serious. The show started focusing on the mental problems that each person seemed to carry with them. At this point it became painfully obvious that Rei was dangerously insane needed to be institutionalized. Shinji, always cowering, indecisive, and finally obediant, admitted to only doing anything for praise. He was unable to develop a further relationship with the other pilots because he really stoped trying and was just content to bitch about every little thing that happened to him. Asuka, playing second fiddle to Shinji, was easily beaten by Angel after Angel as her confidence and abilities went down the drain. Rei kept on being obsessive over Shinji's father and generally antisocial and freaky. The show spiraled down from there as NERV and its parent organization Seele became at odds over their mysterious human evolution project. The last two episodes are nothing but a summarizing clip show and a way too long sequence where Shinji goes batshit insane and everyone talks to him in his head until he realizes that he is worth something as himself. Way to go, Shinji. You just sat through 35 minutes or so of crappy words and clips in your head. You are definately a winner. And that's how famed Evangelion ends. No one knows what is going on with Nerv, the world, or any of the characters, the show simply ends with Shinji realizing he is a a seperate person who exists. You can try to feed in some philosophy or say Shinji's mental illness is a result of humankind's evolution into god, but all it really conveys is that Gainex ran out of production money and time and rushed out a bunch of crap to end the series on. The show still has great animation, great music, a good solid cast of characters, and at times is really good. Even when it is confusing it is still nice to watch. It's only when the show enters the character's twisted minds that it bogs down. Evangelion keeps four stars based on the fact that the good shows are excellant, the plot is originally good, and it mostly stays sane. After finishing the series I was bored enough to give it three stars, but remembering the good times kept it up.

Neon Genesis Evangelion (Death and Rebirth, End of Evangelion)

Quick Plot

Death and Rebirth picks up somewhere around the end of episode 24 and begins a two movie alternate ending to the tv series. The first part, Death, is a long clip summary of the tv series and quickly introduces the audience to the characters and ideas of Evangelion. Rebirth gives an account of what happens when Seele gets sick of NERV not following orders. The military is sent in to invade NERV headquarters and has orders to kill everyone, including the three EVA pilots. As NERV is destroyed, the Evangelions are forced to fight the military to save their own lives. Seele sends in Evangelion Unit 05-13 in an attempt to bring about Third Impact. As Third Impact begins the whole human race finds itself relying on Shinji to choose between evolution and letting humanity remain seperate entities.

My Opinion

The large amounts of repeated material on these movies grated on my nerves. You don't expect to buy two movies which only have about one movie worth of material between them. The animation and cg effects were high quality. Animation and cg, when done well, can mix quite easily. When you start throwing in live action scenes, it creates a total out of place feeling. I feel that was one of the mistakes made in this movie.

The end of Evangelion does not give a very definative conclusion, but instead leaves things up to the viewer's imagination. That is an oft used device in anime these days, but they didn't do a great job of it here. I found myself wondering what the hell is going on quite a bit during the last moments of the movie. The last half hour or so is very surreal. Upon further viewing the ending made more sense, but still things were left vaugely unfinished feeling. I understand that Gainex wanted to move on from Evangelion, but the way to do that is to provide some closure to the characters, not leave people eternally wondering what happened. Leaving people forever wondering is also known as being too lazy or uncreative to finish things properly. All in all, the craziness and massive amounts of repeated material makes me regret the money spent on them. If they had just made one movie, it would have been much better, but then they couldn't charge for the price of two. Greedy Bastards.

Kiki's Delivery Service

Quick Plot

This Studio Ghibli film follows the adventures of the young witch Kiki as she attempts to settle into a new city on her own. When a witch becomes 13 she must leave her hometown and find a town without any witches in it. She then must spend a year in that town and make a living using her abilities. Kiki, however, has only one ability: flying on a broomstick. And that ability isn't quite perfect yet. Kiki and her black cat Jiji soon end up in Koriko, a nice seaside city. They grow discouraged by the impersonal attitudes that many of the city dwellers exibit, but Kiki refuses to give up. By luck she happens to wander by a bakery owned by a friendly woman named Osono and her husband. Osono lets Kiki stay in an empty room upstairs for the night Osono, who is very pregnant, sets up a deal with Kiki. If Kiki will help out with the bakery, Osono will let her live there and let her use the phone to start a delivery service.

Kiki's business starts slow and she spends more time waiting on bakery customers than doing deliveries. As the movie goes on Kiki makes several deliveries around the city and meets many people. One boy she meets soon after arriving, Tombo, is fascinated by Kiki's flying and persistantly tries to befriend her. Kiki gradually warms up to Tombo and they are good friends by the end of the movie. Things seem to be going well until Kiki's powers disappear. She must try to become inspired again so that she can continue her delivery business.

My Opinion

I liked this movie alot. Studio Ghibli is famous for great movies, and this one is no exception. Instead of the grand battle-filled adventure that some Ghibli films offer, this movie has no fighting, no real enemies, and no fantastic technology. What it does have is great character developement and a storyline that doesn't get old, even without intense action. Kiki is full of instantly likeable characters. The character with the least lines, Osono's husband, still manages to give a great impression of himself as a quiet but very nice man. You find yourself loving and feeling sympathy for Kiki herself throughout the movie. Jiji provides good comic relief and a Jiminy Cricket sort of a conscience role throughout the movie. Unlike Jiminy Cricket, Jiji never grows boring and stiff.

I watched the Disney produced version, dubbed of course. I also watched it awhile in Japanese with subtitles. I have read some bad things about this dub because of Phil Hartman being cast as Jiji. There is alot of difference between the subbed Jiji and the dubbed Jiji. Jiji dubbed is a much more sarcastic and fun cat to listen to, in my opinion. Phil did a great job with it. Jiji gained quite a few lines and alot of personality during the dubbing. While the bonus features aren't extraordinary, I did enjoy the second disc, which featured the movie's beautiful storyboards along with the dubbed audio. Overall this was a great movie.

Castle in the Sky (Laputa)

Quick Plot

Castle in the Sky is yet another of the Ghibli Studio films that I have had the privilege of viewing. This story follows the adventures of a orphan girl from the country named Sheeta. She was living a simple life taking care of animals on her farm, until one day she is kidnapped by government officials. After pirates attack the airship transporting her, Sheeta attempts an escape but slips and falls toward a certain death. She is saved by a glowing stone that she wears around her neck that slows her descent. Sheeta descends towards a silver mine but is saved from going in by a young worker named Pazu. Pazu, also an orphan, brings the unconcious girl home with him.

The next day both the pirates and the government come to the mining town looking for Sheeta. After giving them both the runaround Sheeta and Pazu are captured by the military. Pazu is set free in exchange for Sheeta's cooperation in finding the legendary floating city of Laputa. Pazu goes home to find the pirates waiting for him. Learning that Sheeta will likely not be kept alive after her usefullness is over, he joins with the pirates. They embark in a desparate rescue attempt to save Sheeta and keep the power and wealth of Laputa out of the government's hands.

My Opinion

Castle in the Sky's story is good, but what really carries this film are the pirates, in my opinion. This ragtag band provides a ton of laughs throughout most of the movie. The pirates seem like they are going to be the real villians in the begining, but they turn out to be pretty good people. Some of the characters are a bit odd, such as Uncle Pom, who seems fairly insane, but overall they are developed pretty well for a movie. The animation is beautiful, especially for an 80's anime. A norm for Studio Ghibli. The detail level is high throughout. I enjoyed this film quite a bit and thought it was well worth the $20 I paid for it. The plot is simple and straightforward and the film ends with a happy ending.

Witch Hunter Robin

Quick Plot

Witch Hunter Robin follows the missions of the STNJ, a secret witch hunting organization with branches all over the world. When people with supernatural powers begin to use them to harm others, the STNJ moves in to neutralize the them. The newest member of the STNJ, Robin, happens to be a witch herself. She is able to create and control fire, often using it as a sheild or weapon. Each episode covers the investigation and hunt of a witch. The other hunters often do much of the action, it is not soley based around Robin.

My Opinion

The show is a little darker than my tastes really run, but the animation is good and the characters are pretty interesting. If you are looking for a comedy then this one is right out, but if you are looking for a good title on the supernatural, secret agents, and mystery, this one is right up your alley. The action does not dominate the series, but every episode usually has a short chase fight scene when a witch is located. Most of the show is centered on the investigative side of things more. Later on the plot changes alot as conspiracies rip the STNJ office apart.

Yu Yu Hakusho

Quick Plot

Yusuke Urameshi is introduced as his middle school's resident deliquent and top brawler. That soon changes after he saves a kid from being run over and gets hit by a car himself. After dying, Yusuke meets Botan, a perky blue-haired woman who is the grim reaper. He eventually is restored to life after going through some ghostly trials. Botan, however, is not finished with him. She informs him that he has been chosen to be a spirit detective in return for being brought back to life. As spirit detective, Yusuke has to battle various demons and other supernatural entities who threaten the earth or annoy Koenma, the prince of the spirit world. He quikly develops certain powers using his spirit energy through training and fighting. He is joined in his adventures by Kuwabara, a former rival of his, Hiei, a incredibly fast demon, and Kurama, a powerful fox demon.

My Opinion

This show has alot of good characters. The show actually shows them changing over time as the cases they work affect them. Artwork is modern looking, and the color is bright and vivid. The show has a definite sense of humor. Yusuke often has to be talked or openly bribed into taking on cases. He has lots of friction with his friends but manages to keep things civil between them. Botan pops up often and lightens the mood further. Overall it is an antihero type of story which works well.

Zoids

Quick Plot

Zoids is a show about a group of often losing mecha pilots, the Blitz Team. On this world about everything anyone does involves the massive Zoids battling league. Zoids are huge animal shaped mecha that apparantly half the world pilots in strictly controlled fights. After Bit Cloud, a zoids junk parts scavenger, joins the Blitz team they rise quickly through the ranks. He pilots the white Liger Zero, a tiger shaped Zoid. They must battle against other teams and the Backdraft group, an illegal and lawless Zoid battling league.

My Opinion

This show is very mediocre. The characters are all fairly boring and standard fare. The mecha designs are good, but looking a bit deeper, all of the zoid series have about the same zoids in them. Which means that this show can't lay claim to having awesome design. It is just another series designed to sell Zoids models and toys. The show has no deep plot, just to become the best. We have already seen this plot attempt by Pokemon, and while mecha are always better than little monsters, this show can't pull off greatness either. The artwork is nice, the character designs are pretty good, the mecha is good, but the plot just fails to deliver.

Zoids:Chaotic Century

Quick Plot

On the world of Zi, things aren't in good shape. There has been a long war going on between Republican Forces and the Imperial Forces. Van, a boy from a small Republican village, loves to explore the ruins of the desert near his village. One day he finds some ancient ruins containing two very unusual creatures. The first is Fiona, a preserved girl of the ancient race of Zoidians. The other is an organoid - a small intelligent zoid- named Zeke. Zeke looks like a five foot tall metal Tyrannosaurus and has the ability to merge with regular Zoids. This merger causes the Zoid to become much more powerful and fast. With his newfound friends Van sets out on a journey that takes him to the very heart of the vast conflict gripping Zi. The imperial army often causes him trouble in his early travels, but its leadership is slowing tearing apart in betrayal, lowering their effectiveness. In later parts of the show he joins an international force of peacekeepers who use Zoids to enforce the law in the remoter parts of the land.

My Opinion

Wow. It's got most of the same Zoids as the regular show, but it actually has a plot and dynamic characters! The show has a point! It's like night and day. This show has likeable characters who actually change and develop over time. The planet Zi actually has a hammered out history that makes sense. I might sound like I am raving, but this is much more than I expected from this type of show, especially after the lackluster Zoids series. The animation somehow delivers on the gritty feeling you get when you view the mostly desert world. The Zoids themselves are cg and look great most of the time. This series has alot of the regular ones, but also introduces some huge and powerful ones that were missing the first time around. There is a large cast of memorable characters and the show actually delivers on humor. All around a very good series.

Cyborg 009

Quick Plot

The secret military organization Black Ghost has kidnapped 9 citizens from around the world and turned them into highly advanced cyborgs. The cyborgs, however, have decided not to cooperate with Black Ghost's evil world domination plans. Thus is the birth of the Zero-Zero team, derived from the 001-009 codenames assigned to the cyborgs. The cyborgs each have some special ability built into them by Black Ghost. 001 is a telepathic infant, 002 is super fast, 003 has enhanced senses, 004 is full of weapons, 005 is super strong, 006 can breath fire, 007 is a shapeshiter, 008 is designed for underwater combat, and 009 is very fast and very strong. They use their talents in a secret war against Black Ghost. They also form a family like group because they have been distanced from their former lives by their enhancements and kidnapping.

My Opinion

This show's style is definately more old school than most on television these days. The character designs seem akin to Kikaider in several aspects. The show is a bit silly but entertaining to watch. The cyborgs spend alot of their time in non action roles, so comedy has to play a large role in it. Character designs are pretty wild for the most part, which is a good thing since all the cyborgs dress alike and go by numerical names. I haven't seen enough of the show to really be an expert on it, but enough to say its good fun.

Kikaider

Quick Plot

Kikaider is the name of a very advanced android created by a scientist named Dr. Komyoji. At the time that Kikaider was first activated, Dr. Komyoji's lab was destroyed by the robotic forces of the mysterious Professor Gill. Kikaider soon meets his creator's daughter, Mitsuko Komyoji. She discovers that Kikaider is a unique andriod because he has a concious circuit, a device that allows him to think for himself instead of blindly following orders. Unfortunately the device isn't completed and Kikaider must constantly fight orders from Professor Gill to reak havoc and destruction. Mitsuko becomes involved as she attempts to help Kikaider fight these impulses and complete his concious circuit. Kikaider spends much of the series trying to flee from those he doesn't want to hurt and trying to fight off Professor Gill's long line of robotic assasions.

My Opinion

A pretty good show overall. It is short, about thirteen episodes if my memory doesn't fail me, and fairly well animated, though not in a style you will see much anymore. Any style which lacks the ability to create hot girls isn't anything I'll miss anyways. The plot holds up pretty well, as do the characters' development. Nothing special about this title really, just another in a long line of android/cyborg/robot human relationship series. It is a fairly dark and angsty show, so if you like that kind of thing check it out.

Lupin the 3rd

Quick Plot

Lupin III is the grandson of Japan's most famous criminal mastermind. And Lupin is following very close in his footsteps. He, along with his associates, constantly plots the next big caper as he jumps from continent to continent in an elaborate game of cat and mouse. His two main associates are Goemon, a master swordsman and martial artist, and Jigen, a expert marksman. Often Fujiko, the busty object of Lupin's affections, helps them, but just as often she is their competition.

The major obstacle in Lupin's goal to become the greatest gentleman theif is Inspector Zenigata of Interpol. This trenchcoat and hat wearing detective is always two steps behind Lupin. Usually Zenigata doesn't come near catching them, but often he foils their plans. From Rio de Janiro to Lake Nesse, Zenigata continiously tries to put Lupin behind bars.

My Opinion

The style of this show would probably put alot of people off. It's a fairly old series, originating from a late 60's manga. The animation is not as crisp and clean as that produced today, and the character style is unlike most any other series. Frankly, it looks old. It feels old. Its a great show though. The characters' personalities are gold. Jigen's sarcasm plays perfectly off of Lupin's straightforward innocence and Goemon's steadfast calmness. The trio just works together and makes Lupin one of the funniest anime out there.

Reign The Conquerer

Quick Plot

This is the story of Alexander the Great, the historical leader from Macedonia who conquered Greek and Persia. Sort of. This version includes some technology that would be advanced for our time. But not a whole lot of it. It basically is just thrown in there randomly. The story follows Alexander and his cohorts as they conquer Greece, fight and fight and conquer Persia, and then keep going and conquering. As they go a mysterious Pythagorean Cult keeps trying to assasinate Alexander. A bit of drama plays out between his closest associates.

My Opinion

Definately not my favorite series. Not even on the list. Frankly, it bothers me that there is a few highly advanced machines here and there, but not a solid technological base. People are riding horses against giant random cutting machines. It frankly just doesn't make sense. The character designs aren't interesting to me either. Everyone is gaunt, ugly, kinda scary. It's made by the same people that made Aeon Flux, which had the same crappy look to it. I thought the show was mostly pretty boring. The idea could have been executed alot better pretty easily. Overall, this show tries to go in too many directions at once and comes out a mess.

Oh! My Goddess - OVAs

Quick Plot

One day Keiichi Morisato is stuck in his dorm taking messages for his dorm mates. And then he gets hungry. After repeatedly trying to find someone who delivers at 3 in the afternoon, he accidently dials the number of the Goddess Relief Office. He gets the Goddess Belldandy, who promises that she will be right over. To his suprise she suddenly appears out of his mirror and tells him that he has one wish that she will grant. He, thinking it all to be a joke, wishes for a girlfriend who is just like her. The contract is made and Belldandy and Keiichi are now bound together by the ultimate force. Due to his dorm's strict policies, Keiichi is not allowed to have girls in his room, and he and Belldandy are quickly evicted. They decide to set up shop in an old abandoned Bhuddist temple, which Belldandy restores to its beautiful prime. Soon Keiichi's sister Megumi happens into town, looking for a place to stay. She moves in with them. Keiichi is not happy with this situation, as you can imagine, but he still has Belldandy and he is a nice guy, so he doesn't dwell on it.

Up in the heavens, meanwhile, the Goddess Urd has been watching the happy couple. She decides that her little sister Belldandy and Keiichi need a little help to further their relationship and tries in her overly agressive way to help out. She ends up banished from Heaven for meddling with the couple and living with them. Keiichi just rolls with the punches. Next Urd and Belldandy's little sister Skuld gets sick of being all alone and trying to kill system bugs. She comes down to see what is keeping Belldandy away and decides that the only way to get her sister back is to break them up. She ends up liking Keiichi somewhat and not wanting to hurt Belldandy. Things seem to be working out good for Keiichi until system bugs start multiplying and messing up things on earth. Until they can figure out the cause and stop the problem, Keiichi and Belldandy's relationship seems doomed.

My Opinion

I like this show alot. It's one that I am glad to have purchased. It's major problem is that their are only 5 episodes, making it one of the shortest series out there. Since it is so short, things move fast. Very fast. It only takes about 5 minutes for Keiichi to go between making his wish and the two moving into the abandoned shrine. Characters tend to not be in as much depth as many would like, since the story has to be moved along so fast. But luckily the story is all about the characters, so there is an ok amount of depth. The artwork in this series is nothing short of amazing because of the level of detail present in the character designs. The hair and clothing are both beautiful and complex. The show has a good amount of humor present, but romance really is the overshadowing element of the series. A good series no matter how you cut it.

Ah! My Goddess: The Movie

Quick Plot

This movie picks up a bit over 2 years after the end of Oh! My Goddess and three years after that series started. As can be expected, the characters look a bit different, but everyone is still around. Things are going good between Keiichi and Belldandy until her old mentor, Celestin, shows up and erases all of her memories of Keiichi and her life on earth. If this wasn't bad enough, Celestin has also used Belldandy to corrupt the Goddess System networks with a fast spreading virus. Keiichi is faced with trying to get Belldandy to remember their contract and three years of memories together while Heaven tries to recover their systems. Urd and Skuld are enraged by Celestin's meddling and both try all they can to help Belldandy and keep Celestin from completing his plans to overthrow the Goddess System. On her part, Belldandy is confused and stressed by her lack of memories and her inability to make things the way they were before. She also must come to terms with the fact that her beloved mentor has to be stopped. The movie deals with serious issues such as should the Goddess system be used to eliminate all suffering and pain in the world, even if it means wiping out most of the people in order to achieve this high ideal. It also covers the idea of true lovers having absolute faith in one another, and the test of that faith.

My Opinion

Overall a much more serious series than the original OVA's. Belldandy spends a good deal of the series crying, if that tells you anything. Urd shows what even a second level goddess can do in several combat scenes. Keiichi spends alot of his time sad and angry over what Celestin has done. Skuld is just plainly mad. The artwork is manificent, the characters are true to form, and the story is gripping and fastpaced. The movie is a definate must see for fans of the series. If you haven't seen the series you might be a bit confused, since not alot of backstory is given, but backstory just wastes time in my opinion. This is very different from the series; the movie is more about action, philosophy, and romance than the humor that pervaded the series.

The Adventures of Mini-Goddess

Quick Plot

This is a four volume spinoff of the original Oh! My Goddess series. The basic idea is simple. Everyday after Keiichi leaves (I would assume to school, but didn't Belldandy go to school with him? Guess I should just accept the premise,) the three goddesses shrink down to rat size and have adventures. Well, Urd and Skuld, along with their rat friend Gan-chan, usually have most of the adventures. Belldandy tends to make a few cameo appearances and stay busy making tea and dinner. Here and there she plays a more important role, but not that often really. I suppose this leaves her time to run off to school occasionally as well. Fans of Belldandy and Keiichi's relationship might be disappointed by this show, as Keiichi never plays a part in the adventures.

The adventures themselves vary wildly. The three (Urd, Skuld, and Gan) do everything, including testing out flying vehicles, treasure hunting, fishing, mountain climbing, and adventures in love. Gan tends to be the heavily punished one in this series; he takes a ton of abuse from Urd and often suffers from the inventions of Skuld. Belldandy is always kind to him, and he seems to be in love with her, but he also often falls for rats and tea kettles and such.

My Opinion

The show is frankly a hoot. It isn't often you will find a show this dedicated to being silly. As a guy I went into this show a bit skeptical, but it quickly won me over. The artwork remains great, even though the characters are all in their chibi forms. Gan-chan really makes this show shine. He is the foil to the Goddesses' craziness. The show really provides a deeper look into the Goddesses on the whole, except for Belldandy. She, as mentioned before, doesn't really play a huge role in the series, so all we see of her is the sweetness that she is famous for. Anyways, each of the 4 volumes contain 12 mini episodes, so alot of what you are paying for is lots of opening and ending scenes with 5 minute shows between. If you can handle that fact, then this is a great series to pick up.

Tenchi Muyo: Mihoshi Special/Magical Girl Pretty Sammy OVAs

Quick Plot

Let's start with the Mihoshi Special. After being accused of being lazy one fine day at the Masaki household, Mihoshi decides to relate the story of one of her most difficult cases as a Galaxy Police officer. She decides to cast members of the Masaki gang as characters in order to make it easier for them to understand. Ryoko, an evil space pirate, has snatched a large amount of ultra energy matter and special investigator Tenchi, and it is up to Mihoshi and Kiyone to get it back. Ayeka, Tenchi's 'fiancee', and Sasami, an apprentice detective, also tags along on their quest. They find Tenchi and Ryoko easily enough, but they have to find Washuu and her galaxy destroying machine before it is too late.

Next, is the 3 Pretty Sammy OVA episodes. These cover the first few adventures of Magical Girl Pretty Sammy, who has been selected by Tsunami of the magical realm Juraihelm to bring happiness to people. Opposing Sammy is Pixy Misa, a girl hypnotized by Tsunami's rival Ramia. Sammy's real identity is Sasami Kawai, and she lives with her brother Tenchi and her mother Chihiro. Her best friend is a girl named Misao, who is secretely Pixy Misa. Tenchi is always being torn apart by Ryoko and Ayeka, as usual. Kiyone and Mihoshi work at Chihiro's music store. Sammy must face foes such as love-love monsters, Bif Standard, and a globby alien with Ramia's memories and hatred of her.

My Opinion

At 165 minutes this will take a while to view. The Mihoshi special is the much smaller part of the dvd, it is mostly the Pretty Sammy episodes that take up the time. Overall it is all good. The Mihoshi Special is very similiar to the usual show in ways, most of the characters have almost the same roles as in normal life. The show is just as funny as one would expect. The Pretty Sammy episodes really suprised me with their humor though. Far from the girlish image I had of it, it was very funny as well. The Tenchi-Ryoko-Ayeka war is on in full force and Ryoko seems even more obsessed than usual. Sasami is cute and gives a unique perspective on things, including the embarrassing aspects of being a magical girl. My only complaint for this dvd is that some of the scenes looked stretched or smooshed, and there was a bit of noise once in a while, like the master copy was messed up a little when copying to dvd.

Martian Successor Nadesico

Quick Plot

The year is 2195. Mankind now has colonies on both the Moon and on Mars. Things seem to be going well until a huge unmanned ship appears from the vicinity of Jupiter. The mysterious invaders are quickly labeled the Jovians. The United Earth Armed Forces(UEAF)are unable to stop the alien invaders and the mars colonies are quickly lost. Only one colonist made it back to earth, Akito Tenkawa. He was almost killed by the invaders but blacked out and mysteriously awoke on earth. Two years pass and Akito has become a fry cook who is famous for becoming catatonic during the battles now raging in the earth's atmosphere. He finally gets fired for his cowardly behavior and then is nearly killed by the flying luggage of a speeding car. The luggage turns out to belong to Yurika Misumaru, Akito's childhood friend and the new captain of a space battleship called the Nadesico.

The Nadesico is an amazing ship built by the private company Nergal Heavy Industries. This ship was crewed with a full esemble of people who, while very eccentric, are the best in their respective fields. Akito manages to get hired on as a cook and a part time mecha pilot after he chases Yurika to the ship. The ship soon becomes involved in a two front war when Nergal decides to disobey the orders of the UEAF and travels to Mars in a hopeless rescue mission.

Akito's troubles are just begining. Yurika is immediately infatuated with him and will not give him peace for five minutes. The ship's communications officer falls hard for him. He has to battle in the mecha even though he hasn't been trained. All the men in the ship envy him because he is so popular with the ladies, but all Akito wants to do is learn to be a better cook.

My Opinion

This immediately became one of my favorite series ever. This is a 26 episode series that comes very close to perfect. The show combines humanoid mecha combat with continous comedy, romance, and drama. It's like Robotech meets Tenchi Muyo in many ways. The thing that stands out the most is the humor that pervades almost every scene. I do not think there was a single episode where I did not burst out laughing at least once. Most every anime type is parodied at some point in this show. The characters are wonderful, diverse, and explored in depth. The animation is very crisp and beautiful. In conclusion, any show that can make me laugh this much is a rare gem indeed.

Martian Successor Nadesico The Movie: The Prince of Darkness

Quick Plot

This movie picks up about 2-3 years after the end of the war depicted in the Nadesico tv series. The Jovians and the United Earth forces have become allies and things seem rather peaceful. Bosun jumping, a form of teleporting ships from one place to another, has become popular and is controlled by an agency called the Hisago Plan. Ruri, the child prodigy who was the science officer aboard the original Nadesico, is now the captain of the Nadesico B. As for Akito and Yurika, they appear to be dead. A group of people, the Martian Successors, have decided to rebel against the United Earth and take over the Bosun Jumping facility on Mars. Their primary weapon is the ability to jump a ship or mecha anywhere they want. The way that they do this is that they had in the past captured several class A jumpers, people who could Bosun jump on their own. Yurika, Akito, and Inez were three who could do this. They managed to capture Yurika and Akito and experimented on the two. This led to Akito losing all of his senses and, after he escaped, the prince of darkness, a vengence hungry fighter who cares about nothing but killing the people who destroyed his life. Yurika was put into a dream state and tricked by computers emulating Akito into jumping the Martian Successor's ships and troops anywhere they wanted.

The entire crew of the original Nadesico, minus Akito and Yurika of course, are brought together to crew the very powerful new spaceship the Nadesico C. Their mission is to stop the Martian Successor group. The reason for this reunion is unknown since once they reach the jumping facility it only takes Ruri and the computer mind from the original Nadesico to completely take over all the the Successor's computers and weapons. The only other people who do anything are the old pilots led by Ryoko and a newcomer from the Nadesico B. They fend off an attack by a crew of Mecha led by a mad man whose mind was destroyed by bosun jumping experiments. The crazy leader is killed by the possibly insane Akito in the battle. The Martians surrender and Yurika is recovered by the Nadesico C crew in apparantly ok condition, but Akito just leaves. Ruri says that he will come back, and if he doesn't, they will find him, because he is very special to him.

My Opinion

What a horrible movie. Usually I don't completely spoil movies like that, but I do it this time in an attempt to lower the chances of more people buying/watching this movie. If you loved the humor of the Nadesico series, dont go looking for it here. If you loved the girls chasing Akito plot of the Nadesico series, well you wont be seeing any of that either. If you liked Akito at all, well you might not like this movie. I know I didn't. Akito and Yurika's happy ending is completely destroyed in this movie, as is Akito's passion for cooking. Most of the characters from the original are here, but most of them are thrown in so fast that unless you are very familiar with them, you won't know what's going on. The story moves fast;the entire movie is only 90 minutes. As a result, alot of the movie remains pretty confusing. What happened to cause the current political environment, what happens to Akito afterwards, if Yurika is really ok, what the hell is going on between Nergal and the United Earth Forces, and the entire idea of Akito as the dark prince who has no senses and has some experiment kid somehow being his senses are not explained. It's really a mess.

After seeing the series I expected this movie to be good, not a jumbled heap of tragedy, confusion, and darkness. Very dissapointing. As far as looks go the movie is very well drawn and animated, the mechanical designs are nice, and the music fits the mood, but the storyline seems like it was written by a crazed goth writing crappy fanfiction. The writers of this should really look hard at what made Nadesico good and try writing something along those lines. This movie simply didn't need to happen. It is so different from the series that one gets the feeling that they just made it include the Nadesico crew to increase sales. I will simply think of it being like Tenchi in Tokyo was to the original OVAs. An alternate universe situation that is just a what if, not the official way that Akito and Yurika end up. I just hate the thought that they could take a series that was all about laughter and fun and basically ruin all of the main characters' lives.
**Updated Review**
I have now watched this movie again. While I still did not like the movie, I didn't hate it as much as the first time through. It would be an ok movie if it didn't have the Nadesico title and characters. It is definately not a good sequel. I have read that the original creater of Nadesico didn't like the series after it was done because he was more into creating darker and more serious stories. I guess they made the mistake of letting him have more control over this movie. A good sequel second movie would do alot to restore my faith in this movie, but I cannot imagine a second movie will get off the ground after this.

Favorite Characters

Well...Certainly not ruint for life Akito...or enslaved Yurika. I guess Ryoko is the only character I didn't feel had been ruined by this movie.

All Purpose Cultural Catgirl Nuku Nuku (OVAs)

Quick Plot

Kyusaku Natsume was a brilliant scientist who fell in love with Akiko Mishima, the heir of the superconglomerate Mishima Heavy Industries. Funded by Mishima, he began work on a highly advanced android called NK-1124. The two had a son, Ryunosuke, together, and everything seemed to be going fine. Until Kyusaku learned that Akiko planned to sell the android for military purposes. He promptly grabbed Ryunosuke and the prototype android, divorced Akiko, and took off in a jeep.

Akiko, furious, sent her minions after him to retrieve both the android and her son. While the two were on the run, Ryunosuke found an alley cat and wanted to keep it as a pet. At this moment their jeep was spotted and the two sped off in a high speed chase. Their jeep crashed unseen to the pursuing craft, and was accidently riddled by bullets from the angered Mishima pilots.

The cat was mortally wounded by a bullet, but Kyusaku used his genius mind to transplant the mind of the cat into the android. Thus was born Nuku Nuku.

The rest of the short 6 episode series mostly deals with the attempts of Akiko to regain custody of her son and destroy or capture Nuku Nuku. With the full arsenol of Mishima Industries at her disposal, she ends up constantly throwing heavy mechs at Nuku Nuku, who manages to stomp everything that comes her way.

My Opinion

This really is a great show. The animation is crisp and clean, the music fits the scenes, the plot makes sense and is full of comedy; everything needed for this to be great is there. At first I thought that Nuku Nuku's voice would get on my nerves, but once I got used to it, it was fine. The characters really are where this series shines. Nuku Nuku pulls off the naive catgirl part very well. Akiko and Kyusaku are believable as a recently divorced couple who are kept apart by differing circumstances and beliefs. As for the music, it always seems to fit the scenes rather well.

Elf Princess Rane

Quick Plot

Go Takarada is a rash young man who dreams of going on adventures like his archaeologist parents do. The trouble is that there are not many adventures and treasure in the middle of the city. That all changes one day when a tiny blonde elf suddenly appears naked before him. The elf, Princess Rane, is searching in this world for the Four Hearts, a mystical item which protects her land. Go, meanwhile, is convinced that she is there to lead him into adventures and to treasure galore.

Mari Yumenokata, the daughter of the owner of the Yumenokata Foundation, Manzo Yumenokata, is Go's neighbor and is secretely in love with him. When he suddenly rushes off with Rane, she becomes jealous and hurt that he doesn't ask her to come along. Suddenly another elf named Leen shows up before her. Leen is out to kill Rane and get all the glory of finding the Four Hearts herself.

On top of all this craziness is the fact that Go has at least 6 identical twin sisters who appear throughout the show. The pink haired beauties are Mizuki the gaurdian priestess, Natsuki the firewoman, Haruki the assistant from the Yumenokata Foundation, and Kazuki,Saki, and Yuhki, the three girls of the band Nature's, just back from a world tour.

My Opinion

Well, this certainly is a fast paced show. At a length of only 2 30 minute episodes, alot goes on in a short amount of time. The show is a comedy, obviously, and a fairly wacky one at that. Though the plot is left hanging, it does have a concrete begining. The series seems as though it definately was made with the hopes of at least a full season. Even though it is short, it is very packed with laughs. Not many people could watch this show without cracking a smile at some of the weirdness. Not many people could watch it without getting a bit confused at first by all the pink haired girls running around either. There is a fair amount of nudity in the show (both elves are at times naked and two of the girls are naked at the end, but the show doesn't particularly focus on it. What it does focus on is the crazy overeagerness of Go, the jealousy of Mari, the inability of Rane to communicate well with Go, and the fact that Leen seems to forget what the hell she is doing every five seconds. The major thing that keeps this show from attaining five stars is the fact that it is so short and leaves things largely hanging.

Dragon Half

Quick Plot

Several years ago the King sent out his best swordsman,Ruth the Red Lightening,to capture a red dragon. Ruth decided to run away with her and get married instead. The result is Mink, a dragon half. She has the wings, horns, tail, and strength of a dragon, but is otherwise a beautiful redheaded teenage girl. Trouble starts brewing when the King decides it is time to kill her father in order to win the heart of her dragon mother. He decides to kidnap Mink as part of his advisor Rosario's plan. Mink, meanwhile, is obsessed with singer/dragon slayer Dick Saucer and has no clue abut the King's plotting. After learning that Dick is trying to slay her, thinking her a dragon,Mink sets out with her friends Luffa, Pia, and Mappy the killer mouse on a journey to find a potion to make her fully human.

My Opinion

Extremely silly show. That having been said, its actually quite entertaining. The show alternates between super deformed style, semi deformed style, and normal constantly. Since it is only 2 30 minute episodes long, character development is at a minimal for everyone involved. Character interaction, however, is bountiful and completely hilarious. As for the art style, things are crisp and colorful, and while it may not win any technical achievment awards, the show is fun just to watch. The action scenes between Damaramu and Mink were a particularly hilarious part. The ending animation of this series is famous for being both hilarious and having an extremely catchy and crazy theme.

Amazing Nurse Nanako

Quick Plot

This is a short series about a young nurse named Nanako who works at the Ogami General Hospital. Dr. Ogami keeps Nanako on a rather strict training routine for reasons that are unknown for most of the series. Mysteries abound concerning Nanako's history, unusual flashbacks, and what exactly Ogami Hospital is involved in.

My Opinion

This show seems centered mostly around delivering fan service. The plot is fairly complicated, but usually runs in the background while Nanako's boobs bounce freely around. Out of 6 episodes, the first four have very little to do with the plot. They are mostly just opportunities for people to torture and oogle at Nanako. The final two episodes, however, are filled with science fiction plot, to the point where they had enough material to fill the whole series with it. The artwork is good and crisp, the characters seem interesting, though we don't see much development. Overall, if they had paid more attention to the story and development than to fan service, this would be a good short series, as is it is lacking. And in this day and age, putting only 2 episodes per disc and expecting people to buy it seems a bit greedy.

Escaflowne The Movie

Quick Plot

This movie does not follow the same timeline as the original TV series does, rather it is an alternate retelling of that series. The movie covers the adventures of the depressed teenager Hitomi Kanzaki after she is mysteriously transported to the world of Gaea. She happens to arrive at the same time that Van, a gifted warrior, has captured an enormous machine, Escaflowne, from his enemies. It turns out that Van was meant to be king of this land, but his insane brother slaughtered his parents and began taking over everything. Van's only friends now are a ragtag group of resistance fighters. When Hitomi arrives from the sky, Escaflowne disappears, leading them to believe that she is the Wing Goddess, destined to help them succeed. Hitome and Van must somehow find Escaflowne and defeat his brother before the entire world of Gaea is destroyed.

My Opinion

Overall, not a great movie. The keyword here is angst. Almost everyone had some. Hitomi is a manic depressive who just wants everything to fade away. Van is a moody guy who almost kills her for very little reason and never really redeems himself. The main villian, his brother Allen, is whiny about not being choosen to be king, and wants to destroy the world to stop his pain. Suprisingly enough their fingernails and hair arent black, for this is the biggest bunch of goth whiners that I've ever seen in a movie. The entire atmosphere is dark and gloomy and there is not an ounce of comedy to be seen. The original Escaflowne series was much brighter and well written than this depressing rendition.

Quack Experimental Anime Excel Saga

Quick Plot

This is the heartrending story of a immigrant construction worker named Pedro, who is killed in a freak accident. He now exists as a ghost who only wants to be reunited with his sexy wife and his son. Join Pedro on his uplifting journey towards regaining his life and defeating the man who has stolen everything Pedro holds dear.

This is the story of a small dog named Menchi, doomed for the stomach of her insane owner. Follow her quest to find a home where she does not have to fear for her very life. See the friends she makes along her way, including the brave dog Wolf, leader of a pack of mutts who want only freedom from the harsh tryany of the HOUNDS group.

This is the story of an cute alien race, the Puchu in the midst of a civil war. See their epic space battles as one faction attempts nothing less than the complete invasion of earth. Watch as the Puuchu attempt to integrate themselves into human society while secretely regrouping for one last desperate attack.

And while we are at it, this is the story of Excel Excel, a fast talking and possibly insane red headed girl who is a senior officer/agent of the Secret Ideological Organization Across. Excel works tirelessly out of love/loyalty towards the leader of their division of Across, the great Lord Ilpalazzo. According to Across, the world has become corrupt, and the ignorant masses need to be educated. While eventually world conquest is their goal, right now Lord Ilpalazzo and Excel are starting small, focusing on the city of F. The only problem is that Excel is utterly unreliable when it comes to getting anything accomplished. And she seems to be good at causing alot of trouble.

Excel is soon joined in her exploits by the beautiful alien princess Hyatt, a dark haired woman with the ability to cough up blood and fall over dead repeately within minutes. The two still fail in attempt after attempt to further Across's goals. They also must worry about food and rent money, as Across apparantly doesn't pay much for failure. This is where Menchi comes in. Excel found the dog one day and decided to keep her as an emergency food supply. Menchi, understandably, does not enjoy this situation.

My Opinion

Excel Saga is pure genius. This anime is, of course, a comedy, but every episode experiments with belonging to different genres of anime. There are animal adventure episodes, a sports episodes, a survival horror episode,a robotic catgirl episode, etc. Each experiment fails, usually due to the fact that Excel is unfit to be in any type of genre. With her around, things never go in the usual direction and Across remains with its goals unfulfilled.

The show parodies everything it can as fast as it can. While there is a plot to the series, it is a rather slow paced one. Well, it is pretty fast paced when they are really worried about having a plot. Volume 1 and Volume 6 have alot of plot development, but in between there is alot of craziness which, while it doesn't particularly move things along, makes the series very enjoyable. The inbetween shows are pretty well the documentation of the girls taking every anime they can, spoofing it, and somehow messing up Ilpalazzo's plans in the process. The series also takes the idea of a subplot to a new level with the adventures of Pedro. Not to mention the random subplot with Nabeshin. Let's just say a space butler is involved....

Case Closed (Detective Conan)

Quick Plot

This series covers the adventures of 17 year old Jimmy Kudo (Shinichi Kudo originally.) Jimmy is a brilliant high school sleuth who is obsessed with mysteries and detective work. He wants to be a famous detective like Sherlock Holmes and seems well on his way. He is already famous around town for helping the police solve many hard cases with very little clues to go on.

Things begin to sour for Jimmy after he follows a suspicious black clothed man and witnesses the man extorting money from another. Jimmy is spotted and poisened with an experimental new pill that is supposed to kill without leaving any traces. They leave him for dead but the pill instead transforms his body into that of a 7 year old's.

Jimmy is afraid to tell anyone of his condition because the men might come back to finish the job or hurt his loved ones. He takes the name of Conan Edogawa and moves in with his former girlfriend Rachel Moore and her father, the washed up detective Richard Moore. Conan manages to tag along on Richard's cases, usually solving them discretely while keeping a lookout for a clue to the black clothed men who poisened him. Jimmy is certain he will find them sooner or later because,as he always says, with a key eye for details one truth prevails.

My Opinion

Luckily Cartoon Network picked this show up, at least some of it, and decided to show it late at night. It seems fairly unedited to my eyes. Since it is a detective show, murders happen pretty frequently, and blood is often shown. Overall, this show is quickly becoming one of my favorites after only a week or so of watching. When I was young I often read the Three Detectives and the Encyclopedia Brown series of detective novels. This show follows the same format, showing the clues as they are discovered. Unlike the tales of Sherlock Holmes, you get to hear what Conan is thinking as he ponders each case and see how he arrives at his conclusions. His constant puzzling over the facts until one truth prevails makes this show very entertaining, as the viewer can puzzle along with him. What is sometimes even more entertaining is how Conan must make it look like Richard is figuring out things, since no one will listen to a 7 year old's ideas. As for the look of the show, it has a style that is different from most, but still looks nice. So far this show is gold, and even though most of the episodes follow the same format, there is enough humor and clever tricks to keep it interesting.

Hyper Police

Quick Plot

It has been 22 years since a great cataclysm was brought on by mankind. At that time the doorways between the world of monsters, gods, and humans was opened. This created the present world where creatures of all sorts live on earth alongside a now endangered population of humans. In order to keep the peace in this often violent world, private bounty hunter companies have been formed. A half human half cat monster girl named Natsuki works for the Police Company, one of the smaller and less successful bounty hunter agencies in the city of Shinjuku. She has a crush on her partner, a werewolf named Batenen, but is too shy to act upon it. What she doesn't know is that Batenen is totally in love with her as well, but is afraid to woo his young partner. Things grow more complicated as the duo are split up, with Batanen's new partner being the young and often clumsy wereworlf Tommy, and Natusuki being paired up with a nine tailed fox woman named Sakura.

Unknown to Natsuki, Sakura has only joined their company in an attempt to steal Natsuki's powers for herself and gain her ninth tail. Natsuki is much more powerful than her tiny form indicates; she can create powerful electrical blasts utilizing two parasites named Fujin and Riajin, and she is extremly agile and deadly with a blade. As the show progresses their relationships to each other slowly changes and the four gradually work more closely together. By the end of the series Natsuki must repeatedly make decisions about whether she wants the world she lives in or a world where monsters and humans live seperately.

My Opinion

Hyper Police is a much better series than I thought it would be going in. One of the things that can make or break a show is the likeablity of the characters, and most all of the characters are loveable in this series.

Please Teacher! (Onegai Teacher)

Quick Plot

After Mizuo Kazami is given a license by the Galaxy Federation to be an observer of Earth, she lands her ship in a small lake beside the small town of. She teleports to the nearby shore and is suprised to find that a young man named Kei Kusanagi has witnessed her arrival. He runs off into the night, but it is not his last encounter with the red haired alien. She shows up the next day as his beautiful new homeroom teacher, and later, to his suprise, as his new next door neighbor. Kei offers to help her move her things inside, but after he learns she was the alien from the night before, she begs him not to tell anyone else. The next day she teleports him into the school's storage room for a private conversation to explain why she is there and make sure he won't tell anyone. After the two are found locked in together by the principal, Kei's uncle Minoru lies and says the two are married. Now, to save Mizuo's teaching job and her observation mission, the two must actually get married but keep it secret from the others at their school.

And that's where the trouble begins. One of Kei's beautiful classmates, Koishi, has a crush on him and he is reluctant to tell her that he's not interested in her. His male friends all want to get to know their beautiful teacher better. On top of all this, Kei is afflicted with a rare disease that puts him into coma like standstills when he is nervous or depressed. Kei and Mizuo suddenly have to try and adapt to married life with someone they barely know while keeping their relationshop from everyone. As the show progresses the two deal with the fact that marriage is just not all love and games, it is fighting, making up, and resolving differences.

My Opinion

This series is a riveting one that kept me watching all the way through its too short 13 episodes. What really makes the show so fun is the characters. Kei is a bit of a stereotypical loser who doesn't know what he wants and is often too weak to act when he does, but he does remain firm in his desire to be with Mizuho and keep moving ahead in their relationship. Mizuho, on the other hand, is unique in her character depth. Instead of falling into the usual agressive sex starved woman or completely innocent and eager to please maid roles that all too many characters fall into, Mizuho is much closer to real life. She gets jealous when Kei is hanging out with Koishi, actually spies on him, and has several petty little arguments with him about his poor grades, but she remains comitted to being his wife. While the two are obviously attracted to each other, they are both realistically shy about making the first move.

The major problem with the series that costs it a star are the fact that the other characters delight in interrupting every tender scene and generally bugging Kei at every possible opportunity. The show could have focused more on the trials and tribulations of the two's growing relationship, but instead it became a bit crowded with the distractions of Kei's classmates. Rarely did the two have five minutes where they weren't split up by circumstances. Even on a beach trip honeymoon the two are split up early on by the unwelcome appearance of these classmates. There is simply too much useless distraction from the main plot.

As for the artwork, the scenery is a beautiful rendering of small town life. The characters are well designed and easy to recognize, and the colors are crisp and bright. This show isn't about comedy, unless you find people not being left alone for five minutes funny, but people like Minoru add a touch of humor here and there. Overall it's a very enjoyable show that becomes a bit frustrating from unwelcome distractions.

Omishi Magical Theater: Risky Safety

Quick Plot

Seventh grader Moe Katsuragi has just witnessed her younger boyfriend, Yuya, hanging out with another girl and she is seriously depressed about it. Responding to her negative feelings of depression and desire to die, the tiny apprentice Shinigami Risky appears to take Moe's soul. The little Shinigami inadvertantly brightens Moe's mood with her antics, causing Risky to transform into the apprentice angel Safety. Moe learns that Risky and Safety, through bizarre circumstances, share the same body, so only one can appear at a time. Each are trying to earn points to become a full fledged Angel or Shinigami. Even after Moe's situation is resolved and her soul is no longer in danger, the two stay nearby to enjoy Moe's hospitality and company. Risky is determined to get some souls, be it Moe's, her friends, or whoever's, and Safety is just as determined to make everyone peaceful and loving again.

My Opinion

Risky Safety is a show that is a bizarre mixture of adventure, comedy, and light hearted drama. It has an overall peaceful effect, to the point where it has put me to sleep. The show isn't horribly boring, each episode is only 10 minutes long and has some sort of minor conflict, but the muted colors and peaceful music are very relaxing, let's just say. Risky puts a welcome harsh overtone into the mix, but even she is unable to disrupt the peace for long. The plot is a bit vauge as the attention will suddenly switch focus from Moe to a girl named Fazzy, to fantasy adventures, and the narration is patronizing at best. Overall a good watch if you feel like relaxing, it may seem boring if you are in a mood for real action or drama.

Puni Puni Poemy

Quick Plot

Poemi Watanabe, the fourth grade daughter of Nabeshin and Kumi Kumi from Excel Saga, wants nothing more than to become a voice actress. She refers to herself as Kobayashi(the name of her actual voice actress) almost always and is perhaps the only character ever created who talks faster and is more hyper than Excel herself. When swinging balled aliens descend on Earth and murder Poemi's parents, she is forced to move in with her friend Futaba Aasu and her six sisters. For generations the Aasu family has defended the Earth from danger, but the latest generation only has defensive abilities. When a giant mecha and a deathstar esqe ship attack the earth, they are defenseless. Luckily a mysterious man gives Poemi a magical dead fish, that, when combined with a kitchen knife, transforms her into Puni Puni Poemy, a pink haired superhero. Unfortunately, unlike most magic girls, Poemy is still the same insane and slightly demented girl that she usually is, so alot of collateral damage results during her campaign to thwart the invading aliens. Poemi must now juggle her aspiring voice actress career, her new hectic home, and her heroics while meeting the loving advances of Futaba and avenging her parents.

My Opinion

Well, the makers of Excel Saga have produced a fast paced and insane show that even outdoes Excel in terms of raw crudity and inappropriateness. The show is absolutely insane and hilarious, and unless you have the subtitles on you won't understant half of what is being said the first time through. I laughed almost nonstop throughout both episodes. You really have to be a comedy fan to enjoy this, if you are looking for the usual magic girl show, you will be disappointed. Since this wasn't made for tv, the situations are more sexual than Excel Saga showed except for the final unaired episode 26. What really sums up this OVA is that if you liked Excel Saga, you will like this, and if you hated Excel Saga you will despise this as well. Character designs are bright and colorful and the ladies are a cute bunch. Occassionally completly crude animations of people rolling balls is included, but overall the animation is great and fast paced.

My Neighbor Totoro

Quick Plot

After his wife falls ill and has to stay in the hospital for a time, a professor takes his two daughters, Satsuki and Mei to live in the nearby countryside. The old home they move to is a bit run down, but the girls take delight in exploring the house and it's surrounding countryside. One day Mei sees a small creature scurrying through the grass and follows it. She follows the creature, a Totoro, into a thick thicket and falls through a hole in a giant camphor tree, where she meets a giant Toturo. The two girls have several encounters with the friendly creatures and even meet the Nekobus, a living cat bus. When Mei runs away to visit their mother, Satsuki must ask her unusual friends to help her find the lost little girl.

My Opinion

This movie is one of the most famous and easily recognizable Studio Ghibli films. The story is geared to a much younger age than the usual releases, and there is no real conflict. The character designs are on par with other Ghibli releases, as is the animation quality. The movie shows its age a bit with its faded look, but the ambience this creates goes well with this peaceful movie. For little children, this movie would be a five star, but it might present itself as a bit too simple for the older viewer. It is still an enjoyable look into country life in Japan and the fanciful nature of little children.
