Part 3

“Britney Jean! What is this I hear about you getting married? Is it true?”

I sighed. “Mama…”

“Oh my lord, it’s true! Britney what were you thinking?”

“Mama, listen to me…”

“No Britney. Do you have any idea what this will do to you? To our family…to Jason’s family? This will bite you back in the behind.”

“I know mama. I …”

“Baby you need to get an annulment.”

“I know mama but…”

“No buts about it. I already have a flight booked to go over there in a couple of hours. We will finish this when I get there and then I will take you home.”

I rolled my eyes. “Yes mama.”

She hangs up the phone and I wipe away the tear on my cheek.

“Britney, you ok?” Jason leans up against the headboard and scratches his head. “I heard you on the phone. You’re mom upset?”

“Upset would be an understatement.” I got up and sat next to him. “She’ll be here later today.”

He pulls me to his side. “I’m sorry.”

“It’s ok. We both did this together. You have nothing to be sorry for.”

“Yeah but I should have known better…for your sake and mine.” He paused as I rest my head on his chest. “Britney, I’m not trying to say that I didn’t want this to happen…later on maybe, but not now. Because you know the way I feel about you….i would love for you to be my wife or just be with me period.”

He sighs and I close my eyes, listening to him breathe. The beat of his heart puts me in an unconscious state. When he notices my steady breathing, he leans down to kiss the top of my head.

“We’ll get through this…together we will.”

I open my eyes and find myself alone in the room. I can hear some commotion outside the room; a male and female. I look down at the clock. 5:17 pm.

“Poor Jason. Mama’s probably giving him a mouth full.” I get up to the door and put my ear against it.

“How could you allow this to happen Jason? You know better. You usually have such a level head on your shoulders.”

“I’m sorry ma’am but…”

“Do you realize the field day the media will have with this? I don’t want either of you to go through that. You’ll start getting phone calls and reporters at your home and Britney…” she paused. “She just got through the breakup and put everything behind her.”

There’s a silence among them and just as I was about to open the door, Jason speaks.

“Whatever is in Britney’s best interest…I’ll do it.”

“File for an annulment today.”

“Yes ma’am.”

I open the door and both of their eyes look in mine.

“Hi mama.” I paused and cross my arms over my chest. “So when are we going to the courthouse.”

“Are you ready now?”

I nodded. “Just let me get my purse.” I turn back into the bedroom, my mother following me closely.

“Britney I’m still not…”

“Mama, I’m not in the mood to talk right now.” I say as I grabbed my purse.

“Well we’re going to. Britney you should have known that this would get out into the media. You know you have photographers following you everywhere. How could you do this to yourself?”

“Do what to myself? Mama, what exactly am I trying to do?” I exclaimed. I threw my purse against the wall and it landed on the bed.

“Mama…all I’m trying to do is to be happy, can’t you see that? Yes, getting married may not have been the smartest thing to do but I did it because I wanted to. Because I honestly believed that it would make me happy.” I walked back towards the bed and fell upon it.

“Well did it? Did it make you happy?”

I sighed. “No.” I ran my hands over my face. “It’s not like I don’t love him mama, I do. I just…” There’s a knock on the door.

“Britney?”

I open my eyes to see Jason at the door.

“The courthouse isn’t open until Monday so the papers won’t be filed until then. But we can fill them up now.”

“That’s fine.” I sat up and looked up at my mother. “Let’s get this over with.”
