Can you imagine a world where you cannot afford even a small bread roll? Even more, can you imagine a world where although you cannot afford to roll to eat, you are not needy enough to recieve food from the government? Can you imagine sleeping in a home that has no closed in windows, where the temperature often reaches zero degrees at night, and not having a blanket or quilt to keep your body warm? This is an unfortunate reality for many people in Afghanistan.
A country ravaged by war that has been monopolized by harsh Taliban dictators for eight long years lies in near ruins. The United States has faught to end the rule of the terrorist supporting Taliban, and as they work to rebuild, they need help from those of us who are more fortunate.
Here lies a country full of hope for a better tomorrow. In a world where women once were once required to where large cloaks that had only a small slit for their eyes, and where little girls were not allowed to be educated, there is now a sense of a better, and more free society. Girls are beginning to attend school, women are being allowed to work outside their homes, yet there is still a great deal of need. Please take a look at some of the links below and consider how you might help to set these people free!
In her book, Ten Minutes from Normal, Karen Hughes describes speaking to a young 13 year old girl in a school in Afghanistan. The girl hopes that one day, she can write books. Hughes offers to put something in her own book for the girl, until the girl can realize her own dream. This young girl said the following, "Women should have the freedom to choose their husbands, go to school, and go to work." As Mrs. Hughes left, the girl had one more thing to say, "She hopes you won't forget them; please help them live in freedom."
