Mission Statement

(1) Provide junior golfers the opportunity to improve their skills in a healthy competitive environment; and

(2) Offer interested boys and girls the opportunity to learn the game of golf.

Eligibility

Dependents of authorized patrons (Active Duty, Retired Military, Reservists, DoD Personnel, and Government Contractors assigned to Pax River & Webster Field), between the ages of 7 and 17, who have not reached the age of 18 by 19 August, 2001, are eligible to participate provided they meet USGA Rules of Amateur Status. There is no handicap index limit.(Since we are making the Cedar Point Golf Course, a MWR facility, our home course, eligibility is based on parents eligibility at the golf course)

Instructions/Clinics

Instructions and clinics will be arranged under the guidance of qualified instructors. Junior golfers will be encouraged to participate in the clinics sponsored by MWR at the Cedar Point Golf Course, and conducted by PGA Professionals, Butch Butler, John McCloskey, and Mark Garner.

CPJGA Staff

Staff members are all volunteers. We need volunteers to work our information and registration table during clinics and tournament events; during clinics to assist the Golf Professionals; during tournaments as scorekeepers and starters; as staff photographers and writers to update our homepage and provide information to the local newspaper; and to assist in coordinating our banquet event. Anyone interested in joining our staff please e-mail your request to: [email protected] or [email protected]

Cost to Participants

An objective of the CPJGA is to make participation in the program affordable to all juniors. Please see the schedule of events for a detailed cost breakdown.

Equipment

For the clinics conducted by the Cedar Point Golf Course, clubs will be provided for those who need them. Until it is certain that golf is for the junior, there is no need to buy golf clubs.

Clubs Our golf course will be carrying US Kids golf clubs this year. In our opinion, these are one of the best clubs for juniors starting the game. They are inexpensive and you dont have to buy a complete set at one time. Check them out. A good web site to compare clubs and prices is www.golfday.com

Shoes - Tennis or running shoes will be fine to get started. There is no need to invest in golf shoes now.

Balls - TC2 Wilson is an inexpensive good ball to get started. The Navy Exchange sells a 15-ball pack for $10.95. Most popular brands sell good balls in the $11 to $15 price-range for 15 balls.

Clothes - Comfortable, loose fitting shorts and short sleeve, collared shirts (polo shirts) that do not restrict movement during the swing are recommended. Ball caps are a must.

Tool kit - Include in your tool kit tees, a couple of ball mark repair tools, a small towel, band-aids, an umbrella, sun screen, putting green ball markers, and bug spray.

Book for the junior golfer - The Young Golfer, by Richard Simmons. DK Publishing, Inc. (www.dk.com).

Book for the parent - The Golf Swing, by David Leadbetter. The Stephen Greene Press.

Rules and Regulations

The USGA Rules of Golf governs the play of the CPJGP. The Cedar Point Golf Professional will establish local rules and course conditions on the day of play as well as rulings on suspension or cancellation due to weather conditions.

Parents Participation

While volunteers from the membership of Cedar Point Golf Club will be helping in coordinating all 13 events, parents are encouraged to get involved and support our juniors. By attending program events, parents can provide positive encouragement and help motivate a kid to stay with it and learn the game of golf... a gift of a lifetime.

Caddies

Caddies will be allowed. Parents may caddy only if they agree to abide by CPJGP Rules of Parent Caddies. Parents can only provide positive encouragement and nothing else.

Divisions

We have four divisions:

3-Holers Division  Beginners

6-Holers Division  Advance Beginners

9-Holers Division  Intermediate

18-Holers Division  Advance

Assignment to one of the four divisions is based on skill. In order to move to a higher division, the players must achieve the following scores:

 3-holers must score below 20 in order to advance to the 6-holer division

 6-holers must score below 40 in order to advance to the 9-holer division

 9-holers must score below 55 in order to advance to the 18-holer division

Scoring System

The double-par-plus-putts scoring system is used for all CPJGA tournament events. Once a player gets to double par in the fairway of any hole, he/she picks up the ball and proceeds to the green. On the green, the player will pick the spot that is the fathers from the pin and proceeds to putt and hole out. The score for the hole is the combined score of the fairway (double par) plus the putts taken to hole out.

Fun Policy

To have fun and to enjoy each others company is a top priority. Simply, you must have fun it is mandatory. No excuses allowed.

CPJGA Events

Annual events consist of those sponsored by MWR (clinics and tournaments at the Cedar Point Golf Course) and those sponsored by the CPJGA (informal practice sessions and tournaments at the Cedar Point Golf Course and other local courses). Combined we have 30 events scheduled for 2001. Most events have been scheduled for Saturday afternoons and Friday evenings. The events consist of:

 Five instructional sessions - MWR sponsored;

Six tournaments  MWR sponsored (3-holers/beginners, 6-holers/advance beginners, 9-holers/intermediate, and 18-holers/advance);

 The CPGC Club Championship  MWR sponsored;

 The CPJGA Banquet  MWR/CPJGA sponsored;

 14 Friday evening practice sessions CPJGA sponsored:

 Two Skill Competition Matches CPJGA sponsored

Other CPJGA events

During the summer, a weekly junior golf day is a possibility if we can recruit a couple of golf moms/dads or a couple of the older kids to coordinate the activities (putting contests, chipping contests, practice sessions, lunch and on the golf course play). If anyone is interested in coordinating this effort, please let us know.

Weeks That Last a Lifetime

Whether your son or daughter is a beginner or advanced golfer, this program can help improve his or her level of play. This experience can set the stage for a lifetime of enjoyment. At the same time, feelings of increased self-esteem and self-confidence develop that can carry over into other areas of a youngster's life.

Juniors Participation

All juniors are encouraged to participate in all events.
