| Philip Glass introduced the President of The Tibet House The Drepung Gomang Monks Rahat Ali Khan - 2 songs Dave Matthews - Surprise apperance. Solo guitar for "The Stone" and then "Everyday" Emmylou Harris - "Red Dirt Girl" "My Antonia" (w. D. Matthews - a goregeous song) and then "Michaelangelo" Natalie Merchant - new song done solo on piano Natalie Merchant, Emmylou Harris and Dana Bryant - "Weeping Pilgrim" Dana Bryant - Two wonderful "jazz poems" Nawang Khechog - One musical piece Patti Smith - Did a poem by Allen Ginsburg, accompanied by P. Glass on piano and N. Khechog Philip Glass - Solo piano piece Moby - "Porcelain" with him on guitar and a violinist Then Moby introduces David Bowie as "the greatest musician of the 20th century" David Bowie (arriving on stage to HUGE applause, and dressed in black flared trousers, black shirt, long purple/blue coat, and long yellow Tibetan scarf) performs a magnificent "Heroes" with a four piece string section, Philip Glass on piano, Moby on guitar, Tony Visconti on bass, and Sterling Campbell on drums. Then Bowie did a brief speech about his interest in Tibbetan culture and then performs "Silly Boy Blue" which ends with the Monks coming on stage to build to a stunning close of the song. Patti Smith then introduces her son as a way of celebrating "the future." He performs a cool solo guitar romp, and Patti then jokes that she knew she "could find someone to follow David Bowie." Patti Smith then spoke of her opportunity to meet with his Holiness the Dalai Lama, and the importance of protecting our environment and our water, before launching into the 50's oldie "The Sea of Love" and then a rocking "Pissing in the River." Then the entire cast of performers -including Bowie who held Patti's mic - came out to join Patti is a somewhat jummbled, but altogether GLORIOUS "People Have the Power" that had the audience rushing down the aisles and simply one huge smile throughout the crowd at this magnificent finale. |
