Cow Pies & Bases

Advance Reviews

This book is like having a series of visits from a grade school friend who arrives with a scrapbook of old sepia photos. Like the scents of Ben's old country mercantile, Coates' prose calls up the smells, images, tastes, sounds, and feelings of growing up in the '40's and '50's.

Life seemed simpler then – the dangers not so remote – or so global. Wherever you lived, you will recognize a time when people knew each other in a more immediate and intimate way. Family was close by – to look you in the eye. Coates gets into your eyes and ears and mouth and heart.

Thanks for helping me remember.

This little book with the earthy title should grace every young person’s library.  It calls for respect, honesty, and family fun.

Cow Pies & Bases is a delightful reflection of a time and place when life was simple, work was hard, children used imagination wondering about far away places, and family and community values were taught to children by example more than spoken words.  Easy to pick up and read one or several chapters at a time, this book is a wonderful choice for those who prefer a short read or those who prefer relaxing for hours in a favorite reading spot.
