Robert Coates lives with his wife, Betty Vos, and their Boxers in Northern Iowa. His undergraduate degree is from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. His masters and doctorate in sociology are from the University of Maryland, and he holds a Masters of Divinity degree from Chicago Theological Seminary. As a pastor Bob served Methodist churches in Wisconsin, Delaware and Maryland and most recently the First Congregational Church of Salt Lake City, Utah. His academic life has taken him to Harvard Law School, the University of Chicago, and the University of Utah, where he was Professor of Social Work. Currently, he works part-time with the University of Minnesota’s International Center for Restorative Justice and Peacemaking. His passion, however, is writing. He writes fiction and creative non-fiction. While his career has taken him back and forth from the church to the university, he has never forgotten his rural roots and how those beginnings made possible his varied life journey.
Bob
is happy to be available for author events including book signings, readings,
newspaper and radio interviews, and speaking engagements, depending on where he
is traveling. He can arrange to do
radio or newspaper interviews by phone at almost any time, or in person if he is
in the region.
Bob
is a delightful and entertaining public speaker and is available without a fee
to historical associations and other non-profit organizations. Speaking engagements with booksale opportunities can also
serve as fundraisers for the sponsoring organization.
Bob has been trained as a creative writing workshop leader by the Amherst Writers and Artists Institute in Amherst, Massachusetts. He can offer workshops in a variety of formats, including half day, whole day, weekend, or a short series of weekday evenings, again depending on where his travels have taken him.
