Later that night the storm blows a window open in the friar's oratory, dousing all the candles and leaving him in darkness as he prays. At the same time, Rachel creeps into Richard's chambers, and they fall into a passionate embrace, while down in the kitchen a huge rack of pots and pans collapses on top of the cook, killing him. The next morning two servants discover the body of the cook, and they lay him out in the friar's study. Upon returning to the Great Hall, they find that Rachel has cooked an incredible meal for them, and Sir Thomas senses that there is something between Richard and Rachel. Eleanor and Cedric go out riding, and find a goats head surrounded by candles on a sort of makeshift altar in the forest. Armus visits Rachel in the kitchen, where she tells him of the strange herbs she has put into a pot of broth. Surprised, he drops the spoon, and she stops him from picking it up, warning that it is bad luck to pick up a spoon you've dropped. The abbot arrives with John Mullens, and they tell Sir Thomas that Rachel is a witch. Sir Thomas is skeptical, but Armus falls seriously ill the next day, after they attend the burial of the cook. The villagers capture Rachel, and drag her off, while the Friar watches helplessly. Before they can hang Sherwood without a trial, Sir Thomas rushes to his aid and has him locked in the dungeon. In the night a servant woman, Sara, is brought to Sir Thomas after she told Eleanor that she had seen John Mullens and Lady Lambert arguing just before she was killed. The next morning the children search for clues at the scene of the crime, while Sir Thomas tries to convince Sara to testify before the court. The children find an ornate button in the mud, and Sherwood denies that it belonged to him, reasoning that only a noble would have buttons on their clothing. The slain man's brother, Salim, is charged by his father to find Covington Cross, and take revenge on the man who killed his brother. At Covington Cross, a new serving girl, Antonia, captures the attention of Armus, Richard, and Cedric, the last of whom is the object of much affection himself from another serving maid, Marianne. Evan, a servant in the household, counsels Cedric on how to write a proper love letter to Antonia. When Evan delivers the letter, however, he mistakenly leaves it on Marianne's bed instead of Antonia's, leaving Marianne to believe that Cedric is passionately in love with her. The next morning Salim arrives in the village and is forced into fighting with two men who are suspicious of his appearance. When Salim finally arrives at Covington Cross, the men have regrouped, and attack him as he crouches in the stables, ready to attack Armus and Richard, who are walking near by. Seeing only that the men are ganging up on Salim, Armus and Richard rescue him and help him inside, where he is given a room and a meal. Sir Thomas cautions that their visitor might be dangerous, but Armus insists that Salim is harmless. Marianne asks Eleanor's help in writing a letter to her beloved, but she does not reveal that she is in love with Cedric. Eleanor, assuming that Marianne loves Evan, delivers the letter, signed only "your little serving girl", to him as he tends to things in the friar's chambers. The friar enters just as Evan begins to read the letter, and Evan hides it quickly in a book, which the friar gives to Antonia to deliver to Richard. Richard, finding the letter in the book, assumes that Antonia is in love with him. That night, as Richard sleeps, Salim attempts to kill him, but Richard escapes with only a gash on his arm. Sir Thomas catches Salim and has him thrown in the dungeon, where Armus confronts him. Salim explains to Armus that he has come to Covington Cross to "take a brother for a brother", and Armus is overcome with guilt. The next morning, when the sheriff arrives for the prisoner, Salim escapes and Sir Thomas sends Armus out to help search for him. While cleaning the Solar, Antonia is asked at seperate times by Richard and Cedric to meet them...at the same time that evening. Assuming that they had both seen that she had broken something in her cleaning, she agrees, not wanting to lose her job. Armus finds Salim in a clearing in the woods and they fight, finally forgiving each other and pledging peace between their families. Antonia sets out with a pitcher of wine to meet Richard and Cedric, who do not know that they have both arranged to be meeting Antonia in the Solar at the same time, but is intercepted by Marianne, who insists that she will take the wine to Cedric herself. On her way, Marianne meets Eleanor, and confides that her love is waiting in the Solar. Eleanor next encounters Evan, and tells him that Marianne is waiting for him in the Solar. Seeing Cedric and Richard sneek off towards the Solar themselves, Eleanor suspects that something might be amiss and goes to the Solar herself, where she finds a group of very confused, very embarassed people standing around in the dark. Sir Thomas, angered by all the misadventure, calls a meeting of the involved parties. Richard and Cedric both angrily insist that Antonia is in love with them, until Antonia admits that it's Evan she loves. Richard, knowing that his father has blown the business deal, volunteers to go to Lord Wyatt himself and try to negotiate a new deal. Eleanor goes to Elizabeth for advice on how to be more feminine, much to Elizabeth's surprise. Richard meets with Lord Wyatt and appologizes profusely for what happened at the party. While Richard is meeting with Lord Wyatt, Charlotte comes to her father asking permission to go to the village. Richard later recounts this information to Armus, who rides off for the village to meet up with her. Charlotte gladly leaves her escort behind and allows Armus to accompany her half way home. Elated at this encounter, Armus pleads with Richard to deliver a message to Charlotte for him. After much goading, Richard agrees and sets off for Lord Wyatt's castle. After a stressful session of negotiating, Richard finds Charlotte, who seems to have much more interest in him than in the message he has been charged to deliver. Elizabeth oversees the transformation from tomboy to flower of feminine virtue for Eleanor, who has mixed feelings about the change. Richard tells Armus that the message was delivered, but does not tell him about his budding relationship with Charlotte.
