| Step 1. Reference. Get as many pictures as you can of the character you want to be. Make sure that through these pics you can see every inch of the costume. A good idea is to also collect pics of other people who have cosplayed this character, so you can see what you are doing. Learning from the stories of other cosplayers will help you to know what doesn't work, and will give you useful clues. | |||||||||||||
| Step 2. List. Make a list of every single item that a character is wearing, and include details about it. For Squall, the list would look like this: Coat, Pants, Necklace, Shirt, Boots, Gloves, Fur Collar. Try to figure out what can be bought and what will have to be made by hand. If you will have to make an item, list what items you will need to make it (ie, for fur collar, you will need fur). | |||||||||||||
| Step 3: Hunt. Hunt down the items. For buyable items, go store shopping to look for them. Compare prices. Search for one piece at a time, but keep your eyes open for the other pieces. For items you will make, visit Hobby Lobby and other craft stores to find the materials. | |||||||||||||
| Step 4: Build Piece by Piece. The key to good costuming is to not worry about the costume as a whole, but as a series of pieces that you must aquire, like puzzle pieces. Each piece brings you closer to a finished product. Don't panic, don't worry. Stress is your enemy. Always remember, if you can't finish it by convention date, there's always next time. | |||||||||||||
