| Cosplaying Squall | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Squall is not too hard of a character to cosplay. Most of his clothing can be bought, except for the fur collar. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Coat - I'd go with a cheap pleather one, since you will probably be having it altered to a shorter length, and will be attaching the collar. If you can fit into them, womens or childrens coats work very well. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Pants - Pleather ones will work fine, but I warn you: they will chafe like all get out. Either wear cloth black pants, or (if you want to go for authenticity, like I did), wear cloth knee guards underneath. It will be hot, but it will be worth it. Believe me. (Pleather Pants Locations : Hot Topic (about $17) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Shirt - Any old white shirt will do, really, but if you're a woman, wear a white bra underneath and find a shirt thick enough so you can't see through it. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Necklace - Never fear! You do not have to make his necklace. For $15, you can buy it off many places on the internet. Ebay usually has some | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Boots - Notice that his boots have the metal O rings on either side. These boots are actually available for $40 at Wallmart. Warning: They'll chafe, especially after trying to dance in them. Wear thick or two pairs of socks. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Gloves - He has full black leather gloves. They're just normal gloves. Try a leather store, or if you're cheap on mony, go to Wallmart for working gloves. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Belts - Squall has six belts total: one normal belt, two large belts, and three small ones that wrap around his leg. For the large ones, I bought a pair of studded ones from Rue 21. The small ones, I bought size 20 dog collars. Honest. Those or childrens belts will work fine. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Collar - Squall's fur collar is disputed by cosplayers. Is it gray or white? Is it really thick or only kinda thick? Study pictures of him and make your own judgements. I followed the sketches of Squall instead of the CG, so I decided on an extremely thick white collar. I bought two really puffy fur patches and a rabbits fur (the other type of fur itched at my neck, so I used rabbit fur in the back) at Hobby Lobby. To make it really round, I rolled up a pillow case into a thin cylinder and then sewed the fur around it. It turned out looking just like I wanted it to: really, really puffy. The hard part was keeping it on, since it was my mother's leather jacket and I was not allowed to touch it with a needle. I actually ended up sewing small bean bags into the bottom of the fur to help it balance on my shoulders. It only came off once at the con, when I dove for the Otaku Hunter's bait and rolled around on the floor. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Scar - Use lip liner. And practice a bit before the con. I used lip liner, and people actually tried to escort me to the infirmary. One non-con lady started trading scar stories with me in the bathroom. It looks good. Oh, and train yourself not to scratch your head. Squall's scar is mostly on his forehead and down the side of his nose. It goes down from right to left. Keep a mental image of the scene where he's looking up with blood on his face. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A word on Heat - You will be VERY VERY HOT in this costume. Just a warning. Drink lots of fluids, and make sure to wear the costume a couple times before the con to get an idea of just how hot you will be. The sweat will pool in your shoes, I kid you not. One thing I did to save myself a little grief was take an ice cooler with me, with those gel ice packs in it. Whenever I was not wearing my costume, I put the small items (fur collar, gloves, pants, shirt) into the cooler. The chill certainly helped cool me down. This is probably a great thing to do if you have more than one costume. Don't use ice: don't want your costume getting wet. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Gunblade - I didn't have one. I'll comment on this whenever I get one. You can find them on Ebay occasionally going for more than $200 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
