This city served as the capital of the [Khmer] empire until the 15th century and has become one of the world's most celebrated archaeological sites. Between the 11th and the 13th century the Khmer Empire included much of the Indochinese peninsula and incorporated large parts of what is now southern Vietnam, Laos, and eastern Thailand.
