At the height of its power, the
city of Angkor
was believed to have spanned 100 square miles (260 square kilometers) and to
have been inhabited by as many as 1 million people. More than 1,000 temples
were believed to have been built in Angkor.
In the 15th century the city was mysteriously abandoned, and the jungles slowly
encroached on the ancient city, burying the ruins beneath a thick carpet of
vegetation.
