| Visual Literacy I -- Perceptive Drawing |

| Visual Literacy class is designed to help the student to be more perceptive, and to develop a sense of composition. These are some of the drawings I made in the second rotation. This first drawing is a blind contour drawing. It was the first thing that we learned to do. We had to draw our hand without looking at the paper while we drew. It helps us to learn to follow the contour of the lines we see in the objects around us. |
| Above is a contour drawing of a composition, and a photograph I made of the composition before I drew it. Though I took a photograph, I did not make the drawing from the photograph. I drew the actual objects on the table. Not too terribly bad for a first attempt, eh? I called this drawing "Saturday Afternoon". |

| This drawing is a cross-contour drawing. This exercise is designed to help us to begin to recognize volume in objects. I wasn't very happy with this one, because I don't really think that it does a very good job of representing the green peppers which I drew (yes, those ARE green peppers), though it does a pretty good job of demonstrating volume. |

| These are negative space drawings (done in sumi ink). This helps us to learn that the negative space in between objects is just as much a part of the composition as the objects, themselves, and that it has form and volume. The composition above is piled chairs, and the one to the right is a chair and plant. It reminded me of a porch with wisteria, so I called it "Back Porch". |

| This is just a glimpse of one of the compositions which we were to draw. This one was actually for the purpose of learning to measure shapes and voids. The instructor would place objects on this box, and we would have to position ourselves around the box so that we could draw a pleasing composition. This was not always easy. |
