The port of
CHARLESTOWN
When the River Dart sailed in early 2000, it marked the ending for a port with such an interesting cargo handling history.

We only really started looking at this port from winter 1989, and by that time it was already dying. Gone had the days when 4 coasters were in the port together, and from 1992 you were lucky to see a coaster in there a week, and as the years went on it got to 1 coaster a month, until the cargoes were very rare. The reason for this is that coasters were simply getting too large to operate into this port, even what is now seen to be small, like the Hoo boats, could only just be handled. Par across the bay soon started taking it's cargoes, and Charlestown became a leisure port, with sailing vessels from Square sail moving in. Now these vessels occupy and it is home to a museum, making it a tourist attraction
