To Be Pure...
Written April 28, 2000

Many "Christians" today share the same belief I once held. They think sex is evil, that it is the one sin that defiles our innocence. "Homosexuality" is perceived as having sex with another male (specifically, a certain ritual act). The laws of Leviticus are repeatedly quoted as charges against "homosexuality".
"You Shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination" (Leviticus 18:22)

The laws of Leviticus include circumcision, Jewish separation and purity, and distinction of clean and unclean foods as well as people. These laws were all in effect up through the New Testament. Jesus' death changed all that.
Now we know that whatever the law says; it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may come guilty before God." (Romans 3:19)
"The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." (1 Corinthians 15:56-57)

We are no longer slaves to the Law. Only those not saved are. Jesus said in Mark 7:15, "There is nothing that enters a man from outside which can defile him; but the things which come out of him, those are the things that defile a man." Many "Christians" hold the belief that we are all good inside, innocent. They believe that we can "remain pure in the eyes of God" if we avoid sins such as "homosexuality" (most of the other laws from Leviticus are no longer viewed as applicable today). However, it doesn't work that way. We can't earn our way into heaven.
"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God. Not of work, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them." (Ephesians 2:8-10)

Some "Christians" believe that if we just bring forth what is in us we will be saved, that it is what we let in that robs us of our innocence. However, God says:
"For from within, out of the heart of a man proceeds evil thoughts, adulteries, fornication, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile a man." (Mark 7:21-23)

We've all sinned. We're all guilty. That's why the Law is there. We can eat any food and it does not defile us. We defile ourselves. We can be a new born child or someone who goes out and commits every sin imaginable and we are still under the Law, under the wrath of God, until we are saved. There is nothing we can do to be saved. God saves us. He calls us according to His purpose. We cannot "remain pure". No, it's not an excuse to sin, because, while our flesh is still tainted by sin, if we are saved, our soul is eternal, free, through Love. Love doesn't will to sin. Our freedom is the fulfillment of the Law. That is Grace. We are no longer slaves to the Law because we are no longer slaves to Sin. Yes, I love another male. I love Joey and I commit my life to him only because I commit my life to God, who is Love. I'm not trying to have sex with him, but my parents did that together to bring me to life. People who want to believe children are innocent blame the sin they have from their very birth on their parents act to create them. Yet, the chosen of God, those called to Him to be saved, though born unrighteous, are born from Love. "But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness." (Romans 4:5) Love simply requires free will as Love can not be forced and it's not a choice. Love chooses you. You can't save yourself. God saves you. "There is none righteous; no, not one; there is none who understands; there is none who seeks after God." (Romans 3:10-11) That longing for His peace you feel is the one hunger stronger than sin. Love, not the Law, is the one thing that lets you be pure.
"In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will." (Ephesians 1:11)
