written June 25th, 2003 There is a man who has been making his rounds, promoting Megan's Law and the sex offender registry. He says that adults attracted to minors don't deserve the same rights as others. So, what's strange about that? He claims to be a "sex offender" who is attracted to minors. Supposedly, after having numerous--apparently inconsequential--relationships with coming of age boys, he "molested" his three year old daughter (which could mean any form of contact or perceived sexual gratification because the definition is so vague--which is sad because we judge without even knowing if it's abusive). This man, "Jake Goldenflame," appeared on Oprah a while ago, where he was presented as the "typical ped*phile," with a sexual hunger toward anyone of either gender under the age of eighteen. Yet, as he encouraged people to hate him because "I don't deserve forgiveness," he became obviously far from typical. He became unbelievable. Either he is lying (acting) or he has been brainwashed. Wherever he goes, he tells people only what they expect and want to hear, no matter how unrealistic. He encourages the scare tactics used by shows such as Oprah: "They're in your neighborhood, stalking your kids." His presence fed an already immense irrational fear that Oprah's primarily female viewers have. He volunteered himself as a "monster" to hate. The glassy look in his eyes showed either trained repetition of what to say or brainwashing. When confronted with the inconsistencies of his statements, as though he couldn't think for himself, he repeated the same tired clichés. However, he did show the classic signs that he doesn't believe everything he's preaching. Whether he is a walking drone or an actor, his true danger seems clear. he was created (by whom, I don't know) to "stir things up." Over time, an acceptance of child-lovers may become inevitable, but many people in powerful positions will do anything to prevent that. In the movie X2, the mutant Nightcrawler is controlled by a renegade working within the government and is made to attack the White House to stir up fear and hatred of mutants after the Mutant Registration Act failed. Not only was Jake Goldenflame given a fake last name (so that no one else can have it), a fake ancestral form of the name was even created. Yet, coincidentally, all witnesses are in "hiding" and he is his own lawyer. So, why go to all the trouble to panic people? Why did Stryker go to so much trouble in X2? Perhaps, with a new generation of child and teen lovers, we may all learn acceptance. And, for many people, that is their greatest fear. |
