Journal to Japan - 6/11

June 9, 2001 Saturday (cloudy)

We are going to an onsen (hot spring) with Rob today.  We woke up a lil late and were in much hurry to pack all our stuff (who knew one can accumulate so much crap in just few days)  We weren't able to contact Rob for the longest time.  Turned out that he was out with his coworker last night and didn't come back till 6 in the morning (subways stop around 12, and starts again at 5)  Then in the morning, he had Japanese lessons.  We called him from Shinjuku station.  It was hard to find each other because the station was so huge!

We had ramen for lunch.  Andy had lunch at 2 ramen places!!!  (he really likes ramen)  I just had gyoza (dumplings) at the 2nd place.

We rode the JR train to Outsuki then transfered to go to Kawaguchiko.  I haven't ridden in a train for so long (BART doesn't count)  It was pretty cool that we could turn the seats around so the 4 of us could all face each other.  I really haven't been on a train for a long long long time.  However, it wasn't that good of an idea because it became really crowded since all our legs are sharing the same space now.  We almost missed our stop.  We woke up like one minute before we reached Outsuki, it was a close call.  At Outsuki, we took a smaller train to get to Kawaguchiko.  The hotel people are really nice.  They sent a car to pick us up, carried our bags, arranged our shoes, showed us the view and everything =)  All this w/o tips!!!!  Japanese services are so much better than America's and they don't ask for tips.

We went around to see the lake.  It smelled pretty bad, but we saw many ppl fishing near the shore.  And we had seafood for dinner?  oh oh.....  They weren't really catching anything though, none of them carried any buckets or ice chests.  And we saw them throwing a fish back.  We went to the gaming center and played baseball at the batting cage.  It's pretty hard, we always swing too low or too high.  We then found this jinja (shrine).  It was kinda spooky cuz there's no one there and it was getting dark.  But it's pretty neat, we saw the touri (gate) and the place where you wash your hands, etc.

We had dinner at our hotel.  It was traditional Japanese food.  It's a pretty interesting experience.  We had like 15 dishes, but each one is maybe 2,3 bites.  We had beef, crab (both roasted by ourselves), sashimi, and a lot of other stuff that I don't know the names of.  I had no idea when the waitress was trying to explain to me how to eat each dish...  We were so lost as to even where to start eating from.  We played video games for a while.  they had the original Nintendo there!!!  Rob and my bro actually played that for quite a while (and they went back later that night again while Andy and I were sleeping)

Then we hit the main course of the lil trip - the onsen (hot spring).  Everyone was naked cept Andy (well, we had a lil towel to cover ourselves when we were walking around)  It felt really nice.  I mean the onsen, not cuz everyone's naked, you pervert!  I liked warming myself in the onsen and then cool down w/ a cold shower.  It felt really comfortable.  I fell asleep right afterwards.
