Contemporary Gerhard Richter (1932 - ) One of my favorite paintings at the Milwaukee Art Museum is by Gerhard Richter, a German contemporary artist. Breath is an abstract painting done by layering and scraping away the paint. When I researched Richter's work further I saw that he went through different stages - some abstract others very realistic.

Contemporary Barbara Kruger (1945 - ) I learned about Barbara Kruger through a PBS show we had to watch for one of my art classes called Art:21. Most of the stuff that Kruger does deals with consumerism and feminism - pretty interesting since she started her career as a graphic designer for Mademoiselle magazine.

Post - Impressionism Vincent Van Gogh (1869 - 1890) One of my favorite painters is Van Gogh. Although I'm pretty sure he was crazy or at least majorly depressed, he did create some beautiful works. His use of color and brushwork are absolutely amazing! One of his best known works would be Starry Night.

Baroque Johannes Vermeer (1632 - 1675) Dutch painter, Vermeer, was a slow, methodical painter and a true "painter of light." I became interested in Vermeer after reading the fictional book Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier and by learning about him in Art History.
