A team of independent, unpaid, deaf and non-deaf
volunteers are currently taking a strong initiative to link the deaf community in Alexandria with the rest of the Alexandrian Society. The team leaders are Mr. Samy Gamil who can hear, but was raised by a deaf
parent and Ms. Nagla Bakir who is deaf. Both are experts in sign language and are both very involved in teaching the deaf.Deaf people are as productive as any of us, in fact they can master certain skills faster than
non-deaf people. Their only problem is lack of communication with the vast majority of people (the non- deaf) and thus they find it almost impossible to learn and to work. Most deaf people never learn the basics like
reading, writing & calculating, and even those with natural talents such as painting and sculpturing will never get the chance to develop them, because they simply have no connection with people who have the
know-how and resources for developing those skills. You maythink that life is difficult for all people not just the deaf, and you'd be right, because it is
difficult. Just imagine how much more difficult it would be if you tried to achieve your goals without being able to speak or hear. Try it in your next
business meeting, try negotiating the price with a seller by waving your hands in fury and slapping your palm on your desk.
