Phases of the Beautification process of the Alexandrian City Coastline

Above is a simplified diagram of the Alexandrian Coastline which shows the phases of the development process that is currently taking place. The project, which is handled by the Arab Contractors and prioritized by HE General Abdel Salam El Mahgoub, is due to be complete by the summer of the year 2002. Three phases have been finished so far, stretching from El-Montazah to Stanley, and 3 phases remain. The most demanding of which will be the construction of an overwater bridge from Stanley to Roshdy. Construction of the bridge started in January 2000 and is scheduled to end in June 2001, at the same time as Phase IV which spans from Roshdy to Camp Shizar. The last phase will take place in the winter of 2002 and will involve the coast from Camp Shizar to El Silsila. Some enthusiastic observers say that the works will transform Alexandria once again into an internationally renowned Jewel on the Mediterranean Riviera. Who can disagree? As we can all see, there has been a notable change from the past.

The Cornishe is now a place of beauty and elegance, even when crowded in the summer by the usually huge influx of domestic travellers. Movement by car is now bearable, as the road has been widened to at least 6 lanes and up to 10 lanes in some areas. One question remains, can the people keep their beautiful city clean?
