| George Wallace |
Born: 8 June 1917, New York, New York, USA |
George Wallace sometimes credited as George D. Wallace, to avoid confusion with comic George Wallace and former Governor of Alabama George C. Wallace. The D. in George D. Wallace stands for Dewey. His great-great-grandfather was Spanish-American War hero Admiral George Dewey. He died the year of George Wallace's birth. When he was 13 he moved with his mom and her new husband to McMechen, West Virginia, a coal mining town. He started working in the coal mines when he was 13 years old. |
He joined the Navy in 1936, got out in 1940, and went right back in when World War II started. A chief bosun's mate, he wound up in Los Angeles after a total of 8 years in the service. Wallace supported himself with an array of odd jobs, including a meat packer, a lumberjack and even as a singing bartender. This attracted the attention of Hollywood columnist Jimmie Fidler, who helped him get his show biz start. |
Wallace enrolled in Drama school in the late 1940s, while earning his living tending the greens at MGM. He soon began landing jobs in films and TV, most notably as Commando Cody in the Republic serial "Radar Men From The Moon." He later made his Broadway debut in "Pipe Dreams, "and later in "Pajama Game" and was award nominated for his leading role in "New Girl In Town". Other stage roles have included "The Unsinkable Molly Brown, Jennie, Most Happy Fella, Camelot, Man of La Mancha, and Company." In 1960, his career was stalled when a horse fell on him and broke his back during the making of and episode of TVs "Swamp Fox." His painful recovery took 7 months. |
Even thought George D. Wallace has appeared in over 50 movies and 100 TV programs, as well as staring in a number of prestigious Broadway shows. For some reason, the role of Commando Cody has proven the most durable, and one which he is very happy to be remembered for. |
