If you have no idea what the Forbidden City is, it was the home to the emperor of China. Home is sort of an understatement, you see, this place is HUGE, city-state would be more like it.
Back in the day, only people in the government, family members and the emperor's handlers, servants and assistants were allowed to be here, hence the 'forbidden' part of the name. As well as these people, the emperor's many concubines and mistresses would also be here, ready and waiting for those emergency booty calls, because of this, most of the emperor's closest servants, ones that actually get to see the concubines were castrated (with consent of course), this way, their sexual desires would be muffled and thus be able to work amongst the beauties without even thinking about 'it'. Keep in mind, of course, that back then, the emperor was regarded as the son of heaven, so naturally, what's a couple of nuts compared to serving a living deity? By the way, these lucky guys were called 'eunuchs'.
