 SEND ME

Dr. Ida Scudder, the founder of the Vellore Hospital, was born in a mission house in India. As a youth she was not at all interested in missionary work. Her intention was to go to America for higher studies. One night she was sleeping in the Mission house. Then a villager came and asked her, thinking that she was a doctor, to attend his wife who was suffering from labor pain. Ida told him that she was not a doctor and pointed out that her father was the doctor. He was not willing to engage a male doctor, he wanted a female doctor. That night his wife died without getting medical attention. Ida was shocked. God spoke to Ida through this incident. God called her to treat the Indian women after taking a medical degree. She accepted the challenge. The result is what we see at Vellore-Hospital, Medical College and so on.

One is called to be sent. That is why Jesus sent his disciples with the liberating message.

Matthew 28:18, 19

" Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age."

Luke 24:47

"and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem".

Directives obtained to different people under different circumstances.

 Abraham:-

"Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you.  And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.  I will bless those who bless you, and him who curses you I will curse; and by you all the families of the earth shall bless themselves." (Genesis 12:1-3)

 Moses:-

"Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring forth my people, the sons of Israel, out of Egypt." (Exodus 3:10)

 Isaiah:-

"Go, and say to this people: 'Hear and hear, but do not understand; see and see, but do not perceive.  Make the heart of this people fat, and their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed." (Isaiah 6:9-10)

 Paul:-

"Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel; for I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name."(Acts 9:15-16)

 GOSPEL DIRECTIONS

 1. Direction of the Kingdom of God.

John the Baptist and our Lord directed "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand" (Matt.3:2, 4:17). When the Lord sent the twelve disciples he told them: "And preach as you go, saying, 'the kingdom of heaven is at hand " (Matt.10:7).

2. Direction of love

    Luke 6: 27-38

3. To fight against injustice.

     Matt. 5:38-39; Rom.12:21

God's call arises constantly from all circumstances towards all. The possibilities of one who sets out for Christ is beyond description. If we are to understand the saying of Christ "There is a large harvest, but few workers to gather it in" We have to look into the extensive fields with heavy crop ready to be harvested.

Like Paul we must also be prepared to ask "Lord, what shall I do for you?" and adopt changes in our modus of operation according to the answer we get from the Lord.

WORKSHOP - III

1. Memory verse: Matthew 28: 19 - 20

" Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age."

2. Name 3 persons in the modern age who had special directives. What were they directed to?

3. Evaluate how far is the direction, to fight against injustice useful now?
