LCDR Mush Magnússon

History

Mush was born in 1904 to Mr. and Mrs. Magnússon in Iceland. In 1910 he moved with his parents to the US and became a citizen in 1912. Mush entered the Naval Academy and graduated with the class of `27. After graduation he served as a staff officer on board the cruiser Boston. After only 6 months' service, he was almost court-martialled for insulting the captain. He narrowly escaped that fate when the captain was promoted and transferred. After 2 years on board the Boston he volunteered for submarine school. Some say he was ordered to do this. He served as diving officer in USS S-1 (SS-105). Mush was considered for promotion to XO aboard Dolphin (ex V7) (SS-169) but was passed by when he insulted the wife of Dolphin's commander. Finally promoted to XO of USS Nautilus (ex V6) (SS-168) in `35, he served on board her until `38 when given command of USS Perch (SS-176). Perch was based in Manila when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Departing on patrol immediately, they went to Indochina. On December 23, Perch got hit by a depth charge and sunk immediately. Only 20 crew members survived and were taken prisoners. While being shipped to a POW camp, the convoy was attacked by USS Dolphin (SS-169) which sank the cargo ship carrying the prisoners. Only 4 of the 20 crew members survived and were rescued by the Dolphin. In January 1942 Mush was given command of Tarpon (SS-175). He is still in active service and commands the Gato-class boat USS Grouper (SS-214).
