Your
program seems stalled:
- Give
the computer a minute to see if it will resolve itself
- Shut
down the program. Win95/98 users: Press Ctrl-Alt-Del,
select the errant program from the list displayed, then
choose End Task. in 3.x users: Press Ctrl-Esc, highlight
the program in question, then choose End Task. Hopefully
the naughty program will go away and stop bothering you.
Try again.
- Reboot
the computer. Start, Shut Down/Restart Computer (Win95/98)
or to Program Manager, File, Exit Windows (Win3.x). Perhaps
your PC just needed a little break and will revive itself.
- Check
the Help or ReadMe files that came with the program for
any known bugs or conflicts.
- Visit
the manufacturer's website for assistance.
- Reinstall
the software. Sometimes you can do this right over the current
program, but often this does not fix the problem. You might
need to uninstall the faulty version first.
The
program will not do something you want:
-
Review the Help file....perhaps there is a broken
user. See if there's something you've omitted.
- A
common problem is that a toolbar or menu option
that you remember seeing the last time you used the program
is not there. Often, a program has different "modes"
that offer different options. Check the menu options out
and see if you can bring up different toolbars/options by
switching modes.
- Visit
the manufacturer's website for assistance.
- Reinstall
the software.
You
click a program icon, but the program won't launch/ gives
an error message:
- Check
the icon to see that the correct path to the program is
assigned to it. (Win3.x=highlight the icon, select Item,
Properties from Program Manager. Note Path. Now, go to File
Manager and find the location of the program file. Compare,
make changes if needed. Win95/98=right click the program's
icon, select Properties. Note path stated. Go to Explorer,
find the program, and compare location to path statement.
Adjust if needed.)
- Verify
that you have enough available memory to start a new
program. (Win3.x=in Program Manager, click Help, About Windows.
Win95/98=Go to Control Panel/System/Performance.) If available
resources is less than 75 or 80%, close down some windows.
- Reboot
your system and try to launch again.
- Reinstall
the software.
Your system is slower than normal:
- Check
system resources (see above) and if less than 75-80%,
consider closing down some windows.
- Reboot
your system.
- Verify
that the software you're using can run on the amount
of RAM your system contains. (If you run into
this a lot, consider adding more memory.)
- Perform
a Defrag and Scandisk of your system (go to Start, Programs,
Accessories, System Tools for these options for Win 95/98.
For Win 3.x, exit to DOS and type SCANDISK, then after
that funtion runs, type DEFRAG at the C: prompt.)
- Go
to the system manufacturer's website for assistance.
You installed a program and it won't run:
-
Check to be sure your system meets the requirements
for running the program (requirements can be found on the
software box, or in it's Help file)
- Reboot
your system and try again.
- Check
and verify you installed the program correctly.
- Try
running the program after closing all others first.
- Visit
the manufacturer's website to check for any known "conflicts"
or bugs in the software.
- Reinstall
the software.
Cursor moves too fast/skips/won't move/vanishes:
- Go
to Control Panel and adjust the mouse settings
- Plug
mouse into the back of PC more firmly
- Clean
mouse (as detailed in the "Basics" section)
- Check
for IRQ conflicts...Win95, Control Panel/System /Device
Manager. Win3.x, Control Panel, check individually. Usually
found assigned to IRQ12.
- Reinstall
mouse driver
- Replace
mouse
