WELCOME TO MY USS PYRO AE-24 PAGE 1961-1964

Is the secondship to bear the name which comes from a Greek word meaning fire. The U.S.S. PYRO was one of the largest and most modern Ammunition Ships in the Navy in the 60's and 70's. She was commissioned on 24 July 1959 at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Virginia. Her Duties were to carry and expeditiously transfer at sea the latest type of ammunition, weapons and missles. She was one of the great ships of the Service Force, Pacific Fleet. Pyro was 512 feet long, 72 feet wide, speed in excess to 20 knots, Displacement 17,500 Tons.
