World War I Page

We seem to have lost information about the veterans that fought for our freedom during The Great War. World War I was a united fight for England's Forces as well as the United States This is a bit of history that came to my attention. This is begining of the modern tank. This tank was British and as I find out more about it I will share it with you.

This information was given to me from Dr. John R. Bullen in England. "I believe the tank that you are researching is the Mark VIII variously called the Mark VIII Heavy Tank, the Liberty Tank, the international Tank, and the Anglo-American Tank.

The Mark VIII was basically an Anglo-American design of 1917-1918. It was the best tank design of this period and it was planned to spearhead the opening of Plan 1919, the major attack on the Western Front and into Germany. The Armistice of November 1918 ended the war and the Mark VIII never fired its guns in action.

The tank was 34' 2" long, 10 ' 3" high, and 12' 4" wide, and weighted nearly 39 tons (full load). It had a crew of 12 men, was armed with two 6-pounder Hotchkiss naval guns, and up to seven .30 Browing machin guns. It was powered by a Liberty petrol engine of 338 hp, and armour ranged from 16mm to 6mm thick."
