Home Theater Features.

Today, anyone can enjoy watching a film with “cinematic” picture quality and true-to-life surround sound -- all within the comfort and convenience of their own home. Advances in picture quality HDTV, surround sound, and DVD have made Home Theater a reality for everyone. Nowadays, “the best seat in the house” is truly at home.

Television

The film speed used by the motion picture industry is 24 frames per second. Since TVs display 30 frames per second, films are converted for television broadcast using a process known as 3:2 pull down.

Widescreen Format
The width and height of the film used for movies today are very different than those of the traditional TV screen – film is much wider. Thus when films are translated to video for TV, the entire picture will not fit the TV screen. In the past, films were either scanned to fit the TV screen, which eliminates one third of the original movie, or letterboxed, which reduces the size of the screen by one-third.

People watch their TVs under a variety of different viewing situations. They might watch a sporting event on cable during a sunny afternoon. Or watch the latest DVD movie that evening in a dimly lit room.

An advanced line doubling system that offers a choice of either interlaced or progressive display of non-high definition video sources such as Cable, Satellite, DVD,etc. Picture preference is subjective; some people prefer a Progressive picture and others favor an Interlaced picture. Viewers typically prefer fast moving videos, like sporting events, in interlaced modes; while they watch movies in progressive modes. With Eye Fidelity, viewers can choose between these two scanning techniques.
Progressive Scan doubles the number of visible picture lines per screen by displaying all picture frame lines at once -eliminating line flicker. The interlaced mode provides for a double vertical display (interlaced) of Progressive Scan and reduces annoying motion artifacts. The Interlaced mode also helps smooth out jagged lines sometimes seen on curved and angled surfaces.

HDTV, DVD video sources and other digital advances provide greatly increased resolution and quality of television inputs. And they demand similar advances in display technology.

Sound Systems

Two or Three Way Speakers
Instead of a single speaker cone, two or three way speakers separate the woofer and tweeter and house them separately. This upgraded speaker configuration allows tweeters to be optimized for high frequency sound and woofers for low frequencies, which results in superior sound.

Two or three way speakers provide greater sound clarity, stronger bass drive and enhanced stereo effect, for more enjoyable Home Theater surround sound experience.

3D TruSurround
Without rear speakers, it is difficult to create realistic surround sound through a stereo set-up. With 3D TruSurround, you can enjoy the excitement of surround sound, without having to install rear speakers.

TruSurround is a psycho-acoustical technology. Psychoacoustics can be used to simulate a larger number of loudspeakers and a wider spatial sound stage than is physically present.

3D TruSurround provides the sensation of surround sound by using just two front speakers that process the rear channel signals as well as the front channels.

Crystal Clear Pro ™/Digital Progressive Scan
An exclusive Philips technology, Crystal Clear Pro combines a high-quality progressive scan with a pixel-to-pixel compensation to obtain a clearer and sharper picture. The feature preserves the finest details of an image with a 108mHz processing chip capable of handling 8x-video oversampling. A set of advanced video picture adjustment settings includes: Chroma Luma delay to prevent color bleeding, Gamma adjustments to maximize contrasts and DNR/Sharpness adjustments for increased detail and noise-free images.

Crystal Clear Pro integrates a 3:2 pull-down Progressive Scan to compensate for a film frame rate of 24 frames per second versus the DVD player’s rate of 60 frames per second. It analyzes the sequence and re-interlaces adjacent frames into the progressive image for sharper images and greatly reduced flicker. In addition, the feature also incorporates the DCDi chip from Faroudja to further improve picture quality.

Benefit: Crystal Clear Pro provides a clear, razor sharp picture.

Super Audio CD (SACD)
SACD, the next generation music format, provides a more natural, ultra-high quality sound due to its use of Direct Stream Digital (DSD) Technology. DSD provides the highest possible audio quality, both in stereo and multi-channel surround sound. Unlike conventional systems, DSD does no down-conversion to PCM, which eliminates processing steps and results in no sound distortion. With DSD technology, SACD provides smooth migration to higher quality sound since all types of CDs can be played on the SACD System. Also, the use of a hybrid disc makes the system fully backward and forward compatible with these CDs.

Benefit: SACD provides pure, rich sound with the nuance and ambiance of a live performance.

Dolby Digital® 5.1 Surround Sound
Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound is “the industry standard” format for digital surround sound, including HDTV, DVD players and satellite broadcasts. This technology splits a digital signal into five distinct audio channels plus one “effects” channel, hence its name, Dolby 5.1. The format supports center, left and right front stereo speakers, two rear speakers with separate background channels and a subwoofer for bass boost and rumbling effects. Since Dolby 5.1 is a digital signal, the sound is extremely rich and clear with little speaker noise and clatter.

Benefit: Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound enables you to experience true “cinematic” surround sound in your Home Theater.

Multi-Format Playback
Multi-Format Playback enables users to play various video source technologies (CD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP-3, DVD, DVD+RW and SACD) on your DVD player.

Benefit: With Multi-Format Playback, you can to watch and listen to various video sources with your DVD player, eliminating the need for other types of peripheral equipment.

MP3-CD Playback
MP3 CD Playback merges CD technology with MP3 technology, The feature uses new compression technology by which large digital music files can be made up to 10 times smaller without radically altering their audio quality. For example, a single MP3-CD can hold 10hours of MP3 music (more than 150 tracks compressed at 128kbps for near-CD quality sound).

Benefit: With MP3-CD Playback, you can play your existing CD collection as well as MP3 files stored on CD with your DVD player eliminating the need for a peripheral MP3 player.

Clear Voice
Many DVD movies lack sound clarity and transparency in the mid-frequency range (1-3kHz) making it hard for viewers to follow the dialogue, especially in scenes with dramatic sound effects. An exclusive Philips technology, the Clear Voice sound algorithm enables the digital sound processor to extract the voice dynamics in movie dialogues on all five surround channels – without compromising the width and accuracy of the surround sound frequencies.

Benefit: Clear Voice ensures that you enjoy the benefits of full, five channel surround sound when listening to movie dialogue.

DTS Playback
DTS, the premium digital sound format favored by audio enthusiasts, is now available on select DVD and CD video sources. Philips DVD players feature built-in capabilities that handle today’s most advanced digital audio encoding systems including: MPEG2 audio, DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1. The player automatically detects the type of signal format and recreates it appropriately.

Benefit: DTS Playback enables you to listen to DTS and MPEG2 digital sound formats with your DVD player.

Picture CD
The picture CD feature enables you to put pictures (JPEG (.jpg) file format) on a CD using your DVD player. In the past, picture CDs were only readable using computers.

Benefit: With Picture CD, you can create picture albums containing up to 200 pictures per disc.
