Background What are some of the problems with using embryonic stem cells?
Issues
Impact
When it comes to using embryonic stem cells, there is a controversy over the idea of an embryo and a potential life. Is an embryo a person? According to the International Society for Stem Cell Research, "There is no test for whether an embryo is a person. Instead we are left to our own devices, to our own moral reasoning."

How old of an embryo are scientists willing to study?
Considering that the embryos being studied are donated by fertilization clinics, and they will never enter a uterus, scientists can study an embryo ranging from a few days old to a few weeks old. According to National Institute of Health, "Pluripotent stem cells are isolated from human embryos that are a few days old. Pluripotent stem cell lines have also been developed from fetal tissue (older than 8 weeks of development)."
