The music of Generation X reflects their angst. Alternative bands flourish in their lifetime. Bands like Green Day, Oasis, Blur, Rage against the Machine became popular due to the relevance of their music with angry words aimed at the institutions mostly. For example Rage Against the Machine even has political ravings.

MTV made such a huge impact on Generation X that the generation is sometimes dubbed the MTV generation. MTV was music with a “visual component” (Gen X TV,  50)   thus providing a ‘total’ experience. Its fast-paced scenes engineered by suitable high-technology in media tools makes music more intense. MTV too is responsible for bringing the much-adored singers to the small screen. Fashion and other aspects lifestyle of the stars on TV can thus be imitated easily.

The strange camera angles and quirky sounds that is so characteristic of MTV appeals to Gen X as it is unconventional different. Shows like Parker Lewis Can’t Lose too used this technique.

Due to MTV too, shows tend to be littered with music throughout (not unlike an extended music video). The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air makes use of this effect. Newer show like Felicity and Ally McBeal makes use of different varieties of songs in their episodes that it is enough to make a soundtrack, previously only characteristic of movies. The Friends’ theme song ‘I’ll Be There For You’ became so popular that the Rembrandts recorded a longer version to be played on the radio.

The media and entertainment is a reflection of the characteristics of Generation X. Apart from the many shows whch obviously cater to them, the ever-changing  music too demonstrates the volatility and creativity of this generation.
