     The United States Air National Guard serves two missions, a federal and a state mission.

                                                     
State Mission
     Under state law, the Air National Guard provides peace, safety, protection of property, and preserves order.  These include missions like evergency relief support during natural disasters, maintenance of vital public services, counterdrug operations, adn serch and rescue operations.

                                                   
Federal Misssion
     The Air national Guard's federal mission is to keep well-trained, well-equipped units available for immediate use during war and to provide assistence during national emergencies.  During peacetime, the combat-ready units are sent to most Air Force bases to carry out missions helping with training, mobilization readiness, and unforeseen operations.  The Air National Guard provides nearly half of the Air Forces stragetic airlift support, combat communications functions, aeromedical(illnesses associated with flight) evacuations, and aerial refueling.  The Air National Guard also has total responsibility for air defense of the entire United States.
