My Assessment philosophy
I believe that assessment
should be done on a daily basis both in a formative and summative ways. The use of formative assessment helps the teacher
monitor student learning relative to district curriculum and State
standards. I feel through the use of
this on going formative assessment, I am better able to adjust my own teaching
to make certain my students are learning the skills they need to become
successful individuals, and are prepared to succeed on summative assessments
such as a unit test or State test. I
personally view assessment as an evaluation of my own teaching strategies and
planning, and feel that assessment is the point from which all instruction
begins. With this understanding, I also
feel no one assessment can capture the full range of a students’ learning and
academic growth. Just as students have
many different ways of learning, there must be different methods of assessing a
student’s knowledge. Some of my day to
day assessment strategies may include:
writing samples, running records, book reports, unit tests, quizzes,
direct observation, and discussion & questioning.
