Hello and welcome to my website!
This page is set up to help you understand how I will be evaluating your child's performance in my class.

Frequently Asked Questions

How will you be grading my child's work?

I will always grade my assignments according to either a rubric or answer key.  I will use answer keys when I correct tests and homework.  I will use a rubric when I correct any projects or papers where the student has several objectives to meet.  My rubrics contain what I think the assignment should have to acquire certain points.  A really great example of one of my rubrics is here.  I do not always use this format.  Many times I will just write down some criteria that I want to improve upon and then write how many points it is worth after it in order to create a scoring sheet.

How will you make sure that my child knows what is expected of them?

I like to not only present the assignment, but discuss it as well in order to ensure that they know what I expect of them.  I also like to hand out a copy of my rubric and go over it when I present the project to them.  This helps me convey to them exactly what I am looking and grading for.  It also helps them clearly see what I will be looking for in their project.
I also like to thoroughly look over a test with the students in order to make sure that they understand each section.  We read through the directions, and I answer any questions about that section.  They are also always encouraged to ask questions if they do not understand what I am saying.

How will you prepare my child for a test?

We will always have a review session before I give a test.  This gives me the chance to see if they do  know what is going on.  If I notice that the majority of the class is struggling, I will hold off on the test until I feel that they are ready.  If I notice that a few students are having problems, I will hold an extra review session during lunch and after school if needed to help them.

My child has a learning disability.  How will you help them succeed?

First off, let me say that I believe every child has a right to learn and has a right to succeed.  It is because of this belief that I will do everything within my abilities to ensure this.  I always collaborate with the Special Education teacher at my school in order to provide the best experience for your child.  This collaboration allows me to learn about new techniques to help students and it also teaches me how to better mold my teaching to fit that student.  basically, I like to learn whatever I can to provide a strong learning environment for your student.  I am always open to rearranging a test or homework assignment if it is in the best interest of the student.  A great example would be when I break up a test into sections for that student who has ADD, or ADHD and just isn't able to focus.  Another example could be if I were to blow up test questions on one page each in order to help that visually impaired student.
I also encourage constant communication with you, the parent.  I believe that if we work together, your child will have a better chance of succeeding.
