BACKGROUND
The Daedalus class Assault Landing Vessel was developed in parallel
with the Prometheus
class of submersible aircraft carriers, but unlike that class, the Daedalus
was intended to fight Earth forces. When the first proposals for the Prometheus
were drafted, the political department of the Navy wondered how it would enforce
order on the Earth after a possible alien attack. For this, they would need
surviving forces, and the best way for armed forces to survive would be to be
invisible from orbit: hence, the submersible nature of the Daedalus.
Named after the mythical Greek inventor and builder of the labyrinth and man-made wings the
Daedalus is a work of art. Essentially an immense cross between a landing ship and a submarine the
Daedalus class Vessels are unrivalled on the sea's, with the singular exception of their sister ships, the
Prometheus class
carriers. The Daedalus class was shaped much like the Wasp and
Tarawa class landing ships as built for the pre-unification US Navy. The
vessels had a rectangular upper deck and hull on top of a standard ship hull.
This enabled the Daedalus-class to have a more efficient pressure hull
than the Prometheus
class, which was based on the US supercarriers. As a result, the Daedalus-class
had superior underwater performance in comparison with the Prometheus
class
The able to withstand great pressures and being airtight would be essential for the fate that would befall both the
Daedalus and the Prometheus on February 7th 2009 when the SDF-01
Macorss, South Ataria Island,
Daedalus and Prometheus vessels were folded to near Pluto. Sealed within the
Daedalus's super-structure the ships crew were dazed but unharmed by the
miscalculated fold of the SDF-01 which took them with it.
The Daedalus could not be left orbiting Pluto, and like the Prometheus it was attached to the
SDF-01 Macross. When the SDF-01 would change to Storm Attacker mode it would essentially become one of its arms, and the
Daedalus in particular with assistance from the SDF-01's pin point barrier
defense system was used in the Daedalus attack, which would involve a Zentraedi ship being breached by the
Daedalus 'arm', and firing its weapons, including destroids, from inside the enemy ship.
The Daedalus, along with the Prometheus, was removed from the
SDF-01 at the peak of the First Defensive Battle of Macross City,
when Quamzin took off the entire arm in his ramming attack. The ship was
deemed unfit for repair and was scrapped outright. She was replaced by one of two ARMD Platforms.
Having proven itself as a reliable and hardy design the
Daedalus class of vessels were manufactured on both Earth and UN Colony Worlds in greater numbers. Despite the cessation of the
destroid class of mecha, the Daedalus class vessels still carry many of them owned by the
UNSM and UN Army. In some cases they will carry other military vehicles such as tanks, and
armored personnel carriers, or more troops.

NOTES:
- Depleting the MDC of the main body will put the Vessel out of commission.
All internal systems will shut down, including life support. The ship itself will be an unsalvageable sinking wreck.
- Destroying the command tower will instantly kill the command staff and
deprive the ship of all forms of long range communications, radar and
targeting. The range and targeting capabilities of the secondary systems are
equal to that of a VF-1
Valkyrie. The ship can still operate, but is at -3 on initiative, -3 to
strike, and number of attacks per melee of the weapon systems are reduced by
half. Destroying the main sensory array behind the command tower will have the
same effect, but the command staff will not be killed instantly.
- Depleting the MDC of the main propellers will force the ship to rely on its
secondary propellers. Depleting the MDC of the main propellers AND secondary propellers
will leave the ship adrift at sea.
SPEEDS:
- Speed (Surface): 32+ Knots
Speed (Semi-Submerged): 18 Knots
Maximum Depth: 2.0 miles (3.2 km)
Maximum Range: Unlimited (estimated 30 year life span)
STATISTICAL DATA:
- Length: 488 meters
Weight: 570,500 tons (Full Load)
Main Drive:
Nuclear; 4 pressurized water reactors; 8 turbines giving 520,000+ horsepower
- Radar System: Standard
WEAPON SYSTEMS:
- SURFACE-TO-SURFACE ROCKET LAUNCHER PODS (2): The primary surface based weapon of the
Daedalus class vessels. These two SSM pods are designed to provide saturation fire against beach/land emplacements to facilitate an easier beach landing by the UNSM Marines and other troops carried on board the
Daedalus design. As was shown by beach landings during World War II, troops attempting to make a beach landing suffer atrocious
causalities if not provided with adequate supporting fire. Its for this reason that these devastatingly powerful weapons were fitted to the
Daedalus vessels.
- PRIMARY PURPOSE: Assault
- SECONDARY PURPOSE: Anti-Warship
- RANGE: 100 miles (160 km)
- DAMAGE: 1D6x100 M.D.
- BLAST RADIUS: 50 feet.
- RATE OF FIRE: Volleys of 2, 4, rockets per launcher.
- PAYLOAD: Each launcher holds 4 rockets. Once the rockets are
expended the launcher is reloaded within 1 round via an automated system.
The reload system holds 40 missiles per launcher.
- SUPER SEA SPARROW/HARPOON MISSILE LAUNCHERS (3): Vertical launching combined launchers on the
Daedalus carry both the Sea Sparrow Anti-Ship Missile, and the Harpoon Anti-Submarine missile, both of which have comparable characteristics to each other however wholly different roles. Designed to be launched from the surface these missiles
utilize their own internal guidance systems after launch to lock onto and home in on their target. Both fast and powerful it was felt that the
Daedalus vessels would require something with a hard hitting punch in the event of Naval Warfare.
- PRIMARY PURPOSE: Assault
- SECONDARY PURPOSE: Anti-Ship/Submarine
- MISSILES TYPE: Self-guided missiles
- RANGE: 1400 miles (2249km)
- SPEED: 2010mph (3228kmph)
- DAMAGE: 2D6x100MD
- BLAST RADIUS: 40 feet.
- RATE OF FIRE: Volleys of 1, 2, 3
- PAYLOAD: 10 missiles per launcher, with 10 reloads per launcher
- NOTE: Players must advise the GM of which missile they are firing at which target as a Sea Sparrow can not be fired at a Submarine, and a Harpoon can not be fired at a Ship.
- PHALANX LASER CIWS (3): As part of the close in defense complement of the
Daedalus class vessels they are armed with 3 automated lasers, part of
the Close In Weapon System (CIWS). These high speed firing weapons are
designed to take out close in threats to the carrier, primarily enemy aircraft
that have slipped through the defense net.
- PRIMARY PURPOSE: Anti-Missile
- SECONDARY PURPOSE: Anti-Aircraft
- RANGE: 8 miles (13 km)
- DAMAGE: 1D6x20 M.D. per burst
- RATE OF FIRE: Equal to the controller's number of hand-to-hand
attacks. If set on automatic each cannon/laser turret can fire up to 4 shots
per round.
- PAYLOAD: Unlimited payload
- NOTE: The cannons/turrets can be set on automatic during combat,
during which time they have a +3 to strike due to their advanced tracking
systems. The lasers tracking systems will target incoming missiles first and
attacking mecha/aircraft second.
- 12.7MM SHORT RANGE MACHINE GUNS (4): The
Daedalus class vessels also mount 12.7mm short range machineguns to
defend against small surface craft while in dock. They also work in conjunction with the
automated lasers to defend against aircraft. The 12.7mm guns are manually
operated, and have no protection to the gunners.
- PRIMARY PURPOSE: Anti-Missile
- SECONDARY PURPOSE: Anti-Aircraft
- RANGE: 3 miles (4.8 km)
- DAMAGE: 1D6x10 M.D. per burst
- RATE OF FIRE: Equal to the controller's number of hand-to-hand
attacks.
- PAYLOAD: 600 rounds per 12.7mm gun.
- TORPEDO LAUNCHER TUBES (6): The primary anti-submersible weapon of the
Daedalus Class Vessels. The torpedo launcher tubes fire heavy warhead torpedo's designed to destroy submarines, and/or sea based installations with a single torpedo.
- PRIMARY PURPOSE: Anti-Submarine
- SECONDARY PURPOSE: Assault
- RANGE: 100 miles (160 km)
- DAMAGE: 1D6x100 M.D.
- BLAST RADIUS: 50 feet.
- RATE OF FIRE: 1 per torpedo per launcher per round. Volleys of 1 to 6 torpedo's per volley.
- PAYLOAD: Each torpedo tube holds 1 torpedo. Once a torpedo has been launched the automated loading system reloads the tube. The reload system holds 40 torpedo's per launcher.
SYSTEMS OF NOTE:
- LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEMS: The Daedalus Class Vessels have sufficient life
support to provide breathable air and comfortable temperatures for 2,500
people for up to 30 years (air is recycled). In an emergency the life support
system can support up to 4,000 people at one time, though living conditions
onboard will get extremely cramped at that point. The carrier also holds
sufficient food and water to support 2,200 people for up to 6 months.
- LONG-RANGE LASER/SATELLITE RELAY COMMUNICATIONS: The impressive
communications array of the ship can communicate with up to 1,000
craft simultaneously at ranges of up to 900 miles (1,440 km). This range can
be boosted indefinitely by using satellites or other spacecraft as to relay
communications.
- LONG-RANGE RADAR: The radar array of the vessel is equally
as impressive as the communication system, and can track and identify up to
2,000 craft simultaneously. The radar system has a 2,000 mile/3,200 km range.
- PROPELLERS: Designed for both surface and sub-surface sea use the main propellers and secondary propellers can propel the Assault Landing Vessel through the water at an impressive speed for a vessel of its size..
