Regional Research Laboratory

My masters in chemistry from Union Christian College was finished in the end of 1995. Fortunately, at that time I cleared the CSIR test and subsequently joined Regional Research Laboratory, Trivandrum to do Ph. D. under the supervision of Dr. Vijay G. Nair, the distinguished organic chemist in India.

This was really a nice time (1996-2001) of my life both academically as well as personally. Dr. Nair is really an excellent scientist and a nice mentor. Besides him, I was also fortunate to have senior colleagues like Dr. Anilkumar, Dr. Radhakrishnan etc. Their influence lead me to great areas of research.

My dissertation work has focused on the indepth study of organic reactions (Barbier, Aldol, Reformatsky etc.) of indium reagents with various 1, 2-diones affording alpha-hydroxy carbonyl compounds. Alpha-hydroxy carbonyl compounds are important synthons for a variety of natural products and pharmaceutical compounds.

Secondary to the organometalic chemistry, my work has been investigating the cycloaddition reactions of a series of heterocyclic
o-quinone methides with various alkenes resulting in the formation of polycyclic pyranocoumarins, pyranopyrones, pyranoquinolinones etc.

R R L life also provided me a lot of friends. I will attempt to write down some of their names such as Dr. Prasad Edamana, Mr. Robert Philip, Dr. Vinod Unni, Dr. Manoj Valiyaveettil, Dr. Sajimon Meledath, Dr. Joseph Swaroop Mathen, Dr. Bini Mathew, Dr. Smitha Arun. You can see some of them in the Photo Gallery.
