How important is online to you?
PAUL: I don't know how commercially big it would be, but from a challenge point of view and a gameplay point of view it's massive. Having written CM3 with this larger team that we now have, and having all sat down and played a network game for three months after we finished it, I can't play it single player now. It's just not the same. So I've seen the potential for playing against real people. It's harder, but it's more fun at the same time and I want to take that online and have people doing it every Wednesday night or whatever. I don't think you can rely on people to play it online the same way as they do at home, but they should have the option. They should be able to sit there all day if they want, but you have to accept that people will be away for some of their games.

MILES: The important thing for me is that CM4 will not be just an online game. It will have an amazing one player game and that one player game will be replicated so that you're able to play against people around the world. We're not planning to add a 3D graphics engine into it because we haven't seen a 3D graphics engine that can handle what we're trying to do.
When will you have time to do CM4? Will you be expected to keep producing seasonal updates for CM3?

MILES: Next year is the tenth anniversary of Championship Manager and there will be a special edition released. It'll have extra leagues in it; it won't have many more features because there aren't too many we can add. There'll be some special presents for our fans as well.
PAUL: One thing that we can say about CM 00/01 is that it's got a data editor which we always forget to mention in these things so people can do the transfers as they happen and put themselves in, even.
I think a really good way of playing it is to start the game up, leave it going through the night without playing it then in, like, 2007 or something, come in and play the game from there. That's dead good fun, that, cos some of the players are still the same but things have moved on. It's really interesting to see who's good and who isn't good.
It's also great 'cos somebody might have fallen from grace, maybe Man United aren't dominating anymore and you might want to see if you can do what Ferguson did. That's one way of playing it.
