Lesson Plan The Holocaust |
TOPIC: ABCs OF THE HOLOCAUST (taken from Education World) OBJECTIVE: Students will research sources to select words, such as terms, place names, or people names, for each letter of the alphabet to best convey the history of the Holocaust. RATIONALE: Having students make an ABC book is an excellent way of teaching the basics about any topic. In this topic, students might work on a single letter of the alphabet so that the class as a whole can create an ABC Holocaust book, or small groups of students might create separate ABC books. MATERIALS: There are several areas where students can obtain vocabulary relating to the Holocaust, including on-line sources, or library sources. A sample of on-line sources would be: Holocaust Glossary from the Simon Wisenthal Center Holocaust Glossary from about.com Vocabulary for Holocaust Literature Circles. CLOSURE: This lesson could end with the students presenting some of the work that they have accumulated. You could go around the class and have each student present one or two vocab that hasn t yet been presented. This way, each student could learn more words or phrases than must what they had found. ACTIVITIES: Students will use library and / or online resources to research and locate important terms, place names, or people names associated with the Holocaust. Students might work on their own, in small groups, or as a class to create a Holocaust ABC book - one entry or more for each letter of the alphabet. For each entry, students write a definition that includes historical background and provide an illustration. If applicable, they could use online or library maps and / or photos as well. When the student have finished their part of the book, or their books, they will have the opportunity to present what they have learned to the class as a whole. EVALUATION: Students will share their books and provide background information on unique entries |
| This is a sample of a lesson plan that I've completed for a Social Studies Methodology course. The topic is the Holocaust. This would be a valuable lesson plan for a junior or high school class. |
