YOU MUST PROVIDE: * An Application for Admission to Tidewater Community College

Students are required to submit an official Application for Admission. Although there are no special educational requirements for admission to the program, applicants must have an understanding of basic mathematics, reading, and writing skills.

Contact the Division of Business, Public Services and Technologies at (757) 822-2428 or (757) 822-2300 for a trucking information package including a TCC Application for Admission.
* A copy of your valid Virginia driver's license AND
* A DMV report showing at least 7 years of your driving history

As part of the admission procedure, a recent copy of the applicant's driving record is required. The driving record may be obtained from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles for a small fee. Your driving record and a copy of your valid Virginia driver's license should accompany the application and physical.

The College reserves the right to reject any applicant whose driving record is judged unacceptable. The trucking inudstry indicates that drivers with the following offenses are not hired by trucking companies and are subject to refusal to our program:
  • Careless or reckless driving convictions
  • Alcohol related convictions; a DUI/DWI on your driving record will disqualify you from being admitted.
  • Drug-related convictions
  • Leaving the scene of an accident
  • Any conviction of a felony involving the use of a motor vehicle
  • History of moving violations including improper equipment
  • Combination of:
    • Speeding tickets and suspensions
    • Speeding tickets and accidents (preventable or non-preventable
A pattern indicating poor driving habits that may put Tidewater Community College, its instructors, other students and the general public in danger will prevent an applicant from being accepted.
* A DOT physical examination/Medical Examination Report form

Applicants must pass a standard Department of Transportation physical and submit a copy of the Medical Examination Report form to TCC before the start of class. Physicals are good for two years and are required for employment upon completion of the course. It should be noted that some medical conditions such as a history of heart trouble, mental illness, or back injury, while not affectiing the student's progress in the course, often will be drawbacks to hiring.

For locations where you can get a DOT physical and drug testing accomplished, check out the Resources page.
* A substance abuse screening which is NOT MORE THAN 30 DAYS OLD WHEN THE CLASS BEGINS

All prospective trucking students are required to undergo a drug screening before attending any trucking class. Federal Regulation 382.103 states that testing must be done within 30 days immediately prior to the start of class. Verification that the testing has been performed must be provided by the testing facility and submitted to the college proir to the beginning of the class. Positive test results will require immediate removal from the class.

For locations where you can get a DOT physical and drug testing accomplished, check out the Resources page.
NOTE: ALL paperwork must be turned in by Monday one week prior to the start of classes. Any student who does not attend class by the second day of the session will be subject to administrative removal.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS: Applicants should be able to read and understand the Department of Transportation manual. The ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers and to add and subtract fractions is necessary. Also necessary is a basic understanding of decimals and percentages. The Learning Resources Center at the Portsmouth Campus is available to assist applicants who may need help in these areas. It would be advantageous for the applicant to have experience with a standard shift vehicle and clutch.
