Plant cloning has no real purpose right now. In my mind it is all bragging rights. It may turn out to do something in the future as in making food during devastating forest fires, amazingly long draughts and huge floods in which the methods within the procedure page. Maybe in the near future, our technical advances will lead us to a solution in which we don't have to worry about land space since our ground food could be grown in a labratory which may reduce the risk of the food containing diseases. This may decrease the chances of possibly spreading a disease such as e-coli. A fruit in every basket could contain it and maybe there were 50, 000 baskets shipped so 50, 000 would get the disease. Cloning could possibly be the answer to our problems.
