Linville Gorge High Adventure Staff welcomed 2004 participants to our Base Camp I, Hornet's Nest short term campsite, on Mecklenburg Scout Reservation (MSR) in Dysartsville, NC. MSR is home to Camp Grimes. Participants pitched their tents and brought their remaining gear inside for the shakedown later. Staff and participant introductions were made and an overview of the week was presented. Background and climbing experience was shared as we got to know each other.
All preparations were complete and dinner was cleaned up as the sun set on our first day. We headed up the hill to the indoor climbing gym at Camp Grimes for fun, fellowship, and ground school. Helmets, harnesses and shoes were checked out and issued for the week. We packed our remaining ropes, carabiners and other climbing gear and headed back down to the Hornet's Nest for taps and dreams of adventures ahead.

Staff checked out participant's gear in our shakedown session. Participants repacked their backpacks and stowed their gear. Dry goods were separated by meals and packed in the van along with coolers. Water jugs were washed and filled as there is no filtered water available in Linville Gorge Wilderness area.
While BSA policy allows scouts to use some personal gear such as climbing harness, shoes and chalkbags, Climbing Director's must approve the harness and confirm it's age.
We enjoyed cooking and eating dinner while sharing climbing stories.
Staff and participant photos were taken.
