Back to the Message Boards

In times past, two of my favorite sites on the web were the CNN Cloning board and the CNN Science and Religion board. Everything has changed now, but, at one time, the CNN message boards were a place where people could discuss and debate issues of common interest, and I considered the CNN Message Boards to be in a class by themselves. Over a period of about four years, I spent a great deal of time conversing and debating points with people I met on those boards--and had a great deal of fun doing it.

The first CNN message board to which I posted was the Bible Codes message board. It was on that board that I first met Tom Anderson, Noel Yap, Keith Fosberg and Dawn Willis. It was fun while it lasted. However, the Bible Codes board died within four months of the time that I started posting to it. After it died, I moved to the Cloning board which had already been in existence for some time, and to which Tom, Noel, Keith and Dawn, as well as some other interesting people, were already contributing. This page owes it's existence to my good friend and co-conspiritor, Carl Nicolai, who I first met on the Cloning board.

Basically what happened was that in mid-August 1998, the original CNN Messageboard server went down. A few weeks later, CNN brought back the Cloning messageboard, but the old messages were no longer available. Presumably, they died in the server crash. Carl made note of this, and posted the following: "Also, I would like to create a web site of all the old Cloning posts if anyone has them."

Since I had typically copied the messages to my hard drive to read offline, I still had most of them saved, and I reported to Carl that although I did not have a complete set, I had most of the messages saved to my hard drive. I anticipated that Carl would ask me to send copies of them to him, and he would do with them whatever he wished. Instead, he fixed me up with an account on a machine of his in Taiwan and suggested that I get to work on the page.

After working with Carl on the (now defunct) "Cloning Chronicles" page, it occurred to me that I might be missing something by not having my own personal page. Since the CNN Cloning board had held a continuing interest for me, and since the posts were already appropriately prepared, I decided to create this page and include those messages on it.

After a time, the Cloning board became relatively inactive and I switched my attention to the Science and Religion board. The Science and Religion board never held quite the charm for me that the Cloning board did initially when it was young and active, but there were some very interesting people to talk to, and after the Cloning board started suffering a gradual death, I naturally gravitated to the Science and Religion board where I met Leszek Rzepecki, Joy Busey and Rosemary Behan.

In addition, mainly due to the influence of Carl Nicloai, I also spent a fair amount of time on the Genetics Engineering and the Human Genome boards. Most of the posts from those boards prior to and during the times when I was an active participant are included on this site.
