Occupational
performance issues affected by Lupus:
Will divide occupational
performance issues into three categories: self-care,
productivity and leisure. Important to note that most activities of
daily living are manageable for people with Lupus except when he or she
is experiencing a flare up of their symptoms. A flare up of one’s
symptoms of lupus often causes extreme fatigue.
Self-care:
 |
Bathing or grooming can
be physically challenging because of joint pain and muscle fatigue.
|
 |
It is important for people
with lupus to be extra care full about their hygiene because
infections develop easier, because their immune systems may not be
working properly. |
 |
Dressing and undressing can be fatiguing to the small muscles in a
persons hand because of the fine motor skills required in buttoning
and zipping one’s clothes. |
 |
Sleeping or resting is a very
important part of self-care for lupus patients because many times he
or she is tired. |
 |
Eating can be a tiring or
fatiguing activity as people with lupus often have weak or tired
muscles in their jaws. |
 |
Sometimes people with Lupus
have to watch for painless sores which can develop in their mouth or
nose. |
 |
It is important to have good
foot hygiene and to wear proper foot wear because painful swollen feet
are a common problem.
|
Productivity:
 |
People with lupus are usually
able to do their job, but he or she may work part-time. |
 |
People with lupus may not be
able to lift heavy items due to muscle weakness and painful joints.
Therefore it is important to lift properly and not to lift more than
you are capable of lifting. |
 |
People with lupus often
practice energy conservation techniques to allow them to have enough
energy to get through the day. If he or she over exerts themselves
they might not have enough energy to get through the day. |
 |
People with lupus often learn
to prioritize their day to see what is important to do today and what
can wait until tomorrow. |
 |
It is important to work in a
stress free environment, because stress can sometimes cause Lupus to
flare up and create many of the symptoms related to Lupus such as a
rash, joint pain, and muscle pain with increased fatigue. |
Leisure:
 |
It is important for people
with Lupus to stay out of the sunlight and to avoid certain florescent
lights. Almost one third of the people with Lupus are sensitive to
sunlight. Exposure to sunlight may cause a flare, fever, joint pain,
or inflammation of the heart and lungs. |
 |
Outdoor activities should be
engaged with caution until the person knows if he or she is sensitive
to sunlight. |
 |
Sometimes people with Lupus
are isolated from social events because of their level of fatigue and
their decreased physical ability. |
 |
Swimming is an ideal leisure
activity for the lupus client. It allows endurance strengthening
exercise and low joint impact. |
 |
Joint and muscle pain can
also restrict the amount of activity a person with Lupus might want to
engage in. |
