CLAY NEWS
SECOND HALF OF 1998

09-08-98: The episode of Crook and Chase with Clay will reair on September 11, 1998. Check your local listings for time information.

08-24-98:

  • 1999 Fan Club Party in the works! According to the current Clay Walker "Walker Notes" newsletter, Julie and the Fan Club are putting a fan club party together for Fan Fair next year!! Details as of when/where/what time and all are in the works still. On the back of the July 1998 newsletter you can send in your comments on those questions. Be sure to send it in before Sept. 15th!
  • Clay Walker's Fan Club name has officially been changed! It's now the Clay Walker FAM club. As a result of a typo while Clay was typing some notes, he typed FAM instead of FAN and it's stuck for good. After all, The Clay Walker FAM Club, is a bunch of friends and FAMILY! So, from now on, address your correspondence to the new name! We are Family!
  • Recently Clay was able to do some songwriting with Harlan Howard. Mr. Howard has wrote such classics as "I Fall To Pieces" and "Heartaches By The Number".
  • Recently Giant Records honored Clay with many honors. Among a room filled with guests and friends and family, Clay was given a party with a "Rumor Has It" theme. Giant Records presented Clay with two plaques. One for "Rumor Has It" going platinum and a platinum plaque for selling over 6 million albums. But that wasn't all, Clay was also honored with more:
    • BMI - Special Career Achievement - Award / Airplay & Sales
    • Nashville Chamber of Commerce - Plaque for platinum sales
    • R&R (Radio & Records) - Presentation for airplay / chart success of 9 #1 singles
    • Gavin - Presentation for airplay / chart success of 9 #1 singles
    • Billboard - Plaque - Top most played singles of 1997 / #1 most played single for first half of '97 for "Rumor Has It".
    • CMT - #1 video - "Then What"
  • Clay is gearing up on working on his 5th album! You got it!! Clay's almost finished selecting the singles for his 5th upcoming album and he's almost ready for recording. More on this as the info becomes available!

08-14-98:

  • I'm hearing rumors that Clay's next album is slated for a January 1999 release; more information as it becomes available.
  • Clay performed in Alberta Canada at the Big Valley Jamboree on August 1, 1998. Reporter Anika Van Wyk reported on the show and said Clay was "remarkable". She also offered her own awards (in her opinion, which I agree), that Clay had the BEST SHOW and BEST SONG with "Holding Her & Loving You". Now, no real awards were handed out, but if they were, I'd say Clay would win everytime!
  • Clay chatted on a golf course in Marlon Nebraska last week with actor Michael Douglas. "We had a 20-minute conversation and he seems to enjoy the game for the same reasons I do...I think that trying to control the ball and succeeding has a great sense of peace to it", Clay said.

07-30-98: "You're Beginning To Get To Me" will be going up for airplay on August 10th. So y'all get ready and start requesting this new single!!

06-30-98:

  • Clay's Greatest Hits album had over 35,000 scans in the first week which is why it debuted at #9 on the Country Album Billboard Charts; and making it the Hot Shot Debut of the week (6/27/98).
  • Country Wins Against Jim Salmon. Earlier I had reported that various country artists were taking Los Angeles businessman Jim Salmon to court for "cybersquatting". A federal judge ruled in favor of 27 country music artists; including Clay Walker. The country artists did not seek damages but the judgment was for $7.5 million. The domain names revert back immediately to the artists.

06-23-98:

  • Clay will be featured on the cover of the upcoming issue of Country Weekly. Be sure not to miss this great story. There is a great photo of Clay kneeling by the creek and an awesome photo of Clay with Lori and MaClay!
  • Clay was awesome at 1998's Fan Fair in Nashville TN. Not only did Clay perform during Giant's Label Show, but he was the host. Clay introduced fellow label-mates Daryle Singletary and newcomers, The Wilkinsons. Clay was then introduced by Bill Anderson when it was time for his performance. Clay sang five of his hits including, "Then What", "Live Until I Die", "What's It To You", "Rumor Has It" and an upcoming tune for a later album, "Holding Her & Loving You".
  • I want to welcome the Wilkinson's, Amanda, Tyler and Steve, a family trio to Giant Records. Clay has an awesome label-mate in you three and "26 Cents" is an awesome songs. Welcome to the family!

06-11-98:

  • If you're having trouble finding Clay's "Video Hits", which has 11 of Clay's great videos, I have been able to find it at Media Play stores.
  • I hope you didn't miss Clay on Crook & Chase on Tuesday (or the re-airing on Wednesday)! It should have been titled "Covered in Clay"; because that's exactly what happened. Lorianne was trying to show Clay & Charlie how to make a clay flower pot. Clay made the comment that his looked more like "a potty training bowl". Clay was so funny during this appearance that he nearly left us laughing in tears! The highlight was when Clay sang his new hit "Ordinary People" acoustically!! Yep, just Clay, his guitar and the mike!
  • I hope you also didn't miss Clay on Prime Time Country on Wednesday night. Clay sang "Then What" and "Ordinary People" with his great band backing him up. Clay did his signature showcasing dancing during "Then What"! Clay mentioned that he would have rather kept right on making regular records instead of making a Greatest Hits album, but his label felt he had enough hits to produce an album now. (we feel the same). Clay said he didn't think there was anything great about him to be releasing a greatest hits album. The fans KNOW there's tons of GREAT stuff about Clay! The new CD includes 9 #1 hits! That deserves a standing applause! Clay also got to throw a baseball or two thru some "staged" panes of glass (meant for breaking). This was done in recognition of Little League Baseball Week. Clay also made the comment that his and Lori's house is still in the works on being built and they're still living in the double-wide. He said he wanted to take the house-building in steps since "you're only as good as your last hit". And he mentioned he didn't want to rush into the house-building and get in over his head.
  • And congratulations to Curt Walsh; a guitarist in Clay's band. He is now a proud papa! His bundle of joy arrived just this week. Congrats to Curt and his family!

06-09-98:

  • Well, I just found out today that Clay was on Crook & Chase today. But no fear, it will air again tomorrow, so don't miss it this time! (I'll be taking my own advise)!
  • Clay will be having a new video of his hits, but as of right now, it's not in the stores. So, I'll let you know when it will be out, when I find out. But I do know the videos that it will feature. They will be
    • What's It To You
    • Live Until I Die
    • Where Do I Fit In The Picture
    • Dreaming With My Eyes Open
    • If I Could Make A Living
    • This Woman & This Man
    • Who Needs You Baby
    • Hypnotize The Moon
    • Rumor Has It
    • Watch This
    • Then What
The only two it will not feature are "My Heart Will Never Know" and "One Two I Love You".
  • The new album is out today! It's awesome! The two new hits are nothing less than that. Go out and buy 4 or 5 today!!
  • Clay mentioned at a recent concert I attended that he will include "Holding Her & Loving You" on his next album! Can't wait for that one!

06-03-98:

  • VIDEO & ALBUM TOGETHER!! Yep, Clay will also be releasing his first video on June 9th, the same day he releases his first Greatest Hits album! I'm not sure what the video will include just yet; whether it's videos from his hits or live shots. But be sure to get this! June 9th is looking like a mighty fine day!
  • Here's the songs that will be on the Greatest Hits album. There will only be two new tune, not three. There are 14 hits in all:
    What It To You
    Live Until I Die
Where Do I Fit In The Picture
    Dreaming With My Eyes Open
If I Could Make A Living
    This Woman And This Man
    Who Needs You Baby
    Hypnotize The Moon
Only On Days That End In 'Y'
    Rumor Has It
    Watch This
    Then What
    Ordinary People
You're Beginning To Get To Me
  • Clay will not be at the City of Hope Charity Softball Game. It was never confirmed. I talked to Clay's publicist and he said Clay will not even be at Fan Fair then. Sorry about this, we'll miss Clay for sure!

06-02-98:

  • According to the new Walker Notes (the Fan Club Newsletter), Clay's Greatest Hits album will have not 2, but 3 new singles! One will be "Ordinary People". Another single to be on the album will be called "You're Beginning To Get To Me". Can't wait to hear it!!
  • Clay has a new label mate at Giant Records. Don Williams, 59 and formerly with American Harvest Label, gave us past hits such as "Good Ole Boys Like Me" and "Tulsa Time". Don Williams, known to country fans as the "Gentle Giant", said he was surprised that Giant Records approached him since most labels focus on younger artists these days. Well, the "Gentle Giant" on Giant Records sounds pretty good to me. Don will have a new album out soon. Welcome to family!
  • I've been told that Clay will appear at the City of Hope Celebrity Softball Game, but I've yet to see it written or confirmed. So, be aware it may not come to be, but let's hope so! If you miss seeing the game, it will air on TNN on June 17th from 8pm to 9pm EST.
