Intereting Stuff From the Censuses

1930 US Census

Some of 130 are o on in dividual states page. It is online at Ancestry.com, which is a paid site but I found the Mormons family History Center has a free account. I have copied for most of the states though I did not look to see if anyone was in some places they had never been before. I'll put an example of what I could copy. At Ancestry.com you can view the original online. I would take forever to view ea one and then copy. I did for my family and found alot of info, like occupation, parents place of birth, address. neighbors are on same page also
The fact that someone isn't listed doesn't mean they didn't live there. My gr grandfather, his possible mother, his 3 cousins, and 5 brothers-in-laws are never listed. They are found in the City Directories for 25 years though. I've found several other ex. of people not listed in the Census when I know they were in the state. I'e also found that it isn't as easy as looking thru what I'm told is the right place. I looked thru the Wi censuses 5 times and found new stuf ea time. While I was in Green Bay at genealogy library I was told to look again. Uncharacteristicly for me I listed to her and found lota info.

As far as copying them is concerned the census fall into three catagries.

Indexed

Where surnames are listed in books by year and state. The info will tell which country census to lookup page and maybe line. These are usually the older censuses. Be aware that the further back you go the more likely the spelling is to be bizarre. In 1860 Wisconsin Bridgit Normight is listed. 1880 Illinois Catherine Normyer. Also found some Nar-----. If you know where people lived(ward in cities or county) in the earlier years its possible to look at the actual census. But you better be patient The indexes don't exist for all censuses

Soundex

Where all surnames are arranged by similar sound. Soundex exist for many states for the years 1880 1900 1910 1920. 1880 only has families with children. But if you search and look at he actual census everyone is there

Original Records

Usually the whole county with all listed by individual townships
I have only done the Indexed and soundex records. The others require you to go through the entire film, or township if you know it, one line at a time. There may be thousands of listings. This is was too much work. It's taken months to do parts of 40 states. I have done the vast majority of Censuses that are relavant to us. If you kow the location of the person these earlier cnesuses wouldn't be much trouble though.

WHAT You Need to Know

Transcribing the censuses in an easy to read format is way too much work. You can't EASILY copy it and have the nice neat columns still be there.
You get what you see. If you have a question let me know.

Where the is a ? mark it is usually because the records are too hard to read, or I had a question. Some years from some states are almost impossible to read. Sometimes individual records are hard to read. Sometimes there are also mistakes by the census taker that were obvious. I have noticed how the the spelling varies from census to census and from census to City Directory forthe same people.Sometimes I didn't copy it so I could read it then I went to recopy to the computer. If you interested in an individual let me know and I will recheck and look for the original records where additional info may be.I live very close to the National Archives.

I did not always copy the month of birth. Sometimes I was sick of doing this and started to get sloppy, but on the whole I did OK. It is very helpful if you know your ancestors middle name, and or address or occupation. As you will see there was a great lack of variety when it came to names.

The infomation available varies from state to state and year to year. Some of the earlier years listed occupation, whether literate, country of parents birth amount of property. Most though only have names dates of birth and place of birth. It is either a state or Country. Almost everyone born outside of US was from Ireland though there are a few from England Canada and one from India. The earlier records were taken one house or apt at a time on the same sheet so its possible to see who lived near by. The later records will have the number of the original info from which the soundex availble was copied.
I also have lately found that some names that I had Ignored are just census takers not understanding their accents. Normal is a name I have notice fairly often and ignored. Normal is sometimes our family I've found but I only found it back when the accents were thickest. I believe these phonetic spellings are more common in the earlier census which I am getting more interested in. I have found a Mornile once.
