I wrote this song about a young shantyman in Chapeau, Quebec, whose sweetheart refuses him because of his dissipated behaviour - a subject with which I am quite familiar. The Chapeau is a famous village, and my favourite hotel in the world is there - the Chapeau Hotel, or Freddy's. I remember playing music on the balcony with friends while young people danced sets in the street below.
