1999 october 06dishtowelsi have a love affair with dishtowels.
i don't think i have purchased paper towels in over ten years, nor paper napkins for that matter. it is much nicer to wipe ones fingers and mouth with soft cotton and the cloths are so much more absorbent than paper, and can hold so much more in the way of liquid spills, it seems silly not to use them. not to mention everso slightly more environmentally friendly. i have enough of them that i only have to wash a load every other week, or sometimes even just once a month. i do have virtually klutz-free months, they are just few and far between; most months you can count a variety of spills and other kitchen disasters. they also make for great functional souvenirs. i used to procure all manner of knick-knackage from other countries when i was visiting but i have refined my acquisitory nature such that i now buy only dishtowels, postcards and christmas ornaments: functional and usually small things. i have towels from france, germany, the netherlands, australia, south africa, ireland and japan. somehow i just don't mind cleaning the kitchen as much when it evokes memories of far off places.
i totally forgot to mention why yesterday's entry was titled buffy barqs. gene and i made a late afternoon visit to the grocery while we were waiting for our pizza to be ready. [mushrooms, fresh tomatoes and, on his half, hot italian sausage all piled high on a thick chewy crust -- it was wonderful] almost half the cold beverage cooler was filled with barq's rootbeer, each can emblazoned with a picture of buffy or one of her buddies. it gave me the giggles rightin the middle of the aisle. "heh, buffy barqs."
surely there is a spill for me to wipe up somewhere, claire
