1999 october 07trafficapparently, every driver in the known universe suffered a collapse of their higher functioning today.
this was most obvious in the merge maneuver, which resulted, in each and every instance, in a huge traffic jam as the people in front of me seemed completely confounded by the concept and often came to a complete stop to stare at the other lanes of moving traffic, while the people behind me came as close as possible to my rear bumper and then flashed their lights and honked as if i personally were responsible for the entire fiasco. the freeways were slow, the arterials slower and the frontage roads might as well have been parking lots. even my tried and true squirrel through the alleyways routes were jampacked with hordes of people who seemed to be flabbergasted at thought of operating a motor vehicle. it was like some lost twilight zone episode; i fully expected to never make it home. we'll give just about anyone a license around here, with a minimum of instruction. i much prefer the way they do things in europe, where classes are mandatory and those classes are expensive; you really have some incentive to pay attention to the rules of the road and the proper way to do things. they are also much less hesitant to rip your driver's license out of your incompetent little hands if you demonstrate a lack of appropriate skill. or run over a small child. or drive drunk, just once. one of my coworkers just received his third dui -- and he still has his license. i make sure to leave the office before he does. if he wants to kill himself, more power to him, but i value my life a little more than that. besides, i have enough trouble with all the strangers out there trying their best to run me off the road.
in my email today, from nordstrom.com:
i want to live in the world where $256.00 for a sweater is affordable. remembering the bus days fondly, claire
